WCR: Most Ps in place. I got tons of snuggles last night, but she kept me up all night...same as the night before. She wasn't eating well (her overnight fuds) and there was more lip-licking every time I presented her fuds. I'll call my vet today to ask about the Cerenia. I have some Ondansetron, but I've never used it with Shasta. I always worry about giving her a new drug when I'm not going to be around all day. Should I "get over" my worries and give her some anyways? Also, I have a little crumb of cypro ready to go in a pill pocket, but I know that won't do much good unless the stomach acid is addressed.

I've only used it a couple times when Trix first got sick last year so I'm lacking ondansetron knowledge, but many here do have more experience...if you put it in your subject line, I'm sure you'll get some help there.

You could probably save at least a little cash by getting fluids through Thriving Pets, since it's $15 a bag if you get less than 12 bags. Valley Vet has been out for almost a year now. I don't know anyone else online. You can also try some local pharmacies...everyone seems to have different luck with going that route.

It does sound like the fluids and anti-nausea combo really helped Shasta, so it may be a good idea to consider doing that long-term/as part of her normal new routine. Trix has been on that sort of regimen for a while now, and it has helped her tremendously. In the beginning, when I tried to get her off the meds, she would backslide, so I just accepted that THIS is what keeps her feeling good and eating, so this is what we do. Just a little food for thought!

I don't know about Ondonsetron, but lots of people here have experience with it. I hope Shasta will be feeling more like herself soon. Is it still very hot and rainy where you are? Maybe she's reacting to the climate.

I too know little on Ondonsetron, we never used it for Mannie. It sounds like maybe some anti-nausea med might be needed as part of her normal routine. We did that for Mannie too (cerenia), it seemed to help him. Sending many appy vines Shasta's way. I can understand your concern on giving a new drug when you won;t be home to see how Shasta does with it. Feel better Shasta!

I give Max ondansetron whenever he is nauseous. He might get a little sleepy and if for extended time a little constipated but otherwise no side effects. Starting dose is 1/4 a 4mg pill twice a day. Max need 1/2 a pill. It is safe to go up to as much as a whole 4mg. When I first gave it to him he needed cypro because he wasn't getting a large enough dose. You don't want to give the cypro or ant appetite stimulant to a suspected nauseous cat as it can cause them to gave food aversions.
 
We gave the combination of ondansetron and cypro to Zener for over a year. The ondansetron worked quite well for controlling nausea, we would give it and the cypro about 15-30 minutes before offering food. We used both together for long term without adverse effects. If Zener was vomiting and then not eating, we gave Cerenia injections for 3-5 days. Eventually, we changed to a cerenia tablet three times a week for long term, which also helped with long term nausea and has some reported pain relief properties for IBD cramping.

Anne answered it pretty well. apparently the drug started out to help with nausea from cancer patients. One of my vets was skeptical about just using it for any nausea
but after trying it... it made a difference and we had no side affects from it at all. I think it's important to address the nausea to avoid food aversions and you don't want to stimulate the appetite if there is nausea.
the true test is when you put food in front of them, they are asking for food but they sniff it and turn away.... maybe even a little lip smacking....
Shadow did it so subtly that it took me a little while to recognize it as nausea.
 
You ladies are wonderful. Thank you for all of your advice, experience, help and support. I didn't get a chance to call the vet today. Once I get to working in my office, I'm in a zone...in fact, I'm usually in a time warp kind-of zone. One minute it's 4:00pm and when I look up again, it's 5:45pm. :eek: Tomorrow will be different. I'll be ready to leave and get home. I do have a former student that is supposed to run by the school to pick something up after classes are over, but I may just have her run by my house after she gets finished with crossfit. I did get 100mL squids in her tonight and now she's napping on her blanket next to me, but not right next to me. Poor baby girl. She did eat her dinner well, but not much of her second bowl. :(
