8/11 Herman amps 146 +4 293 +7 176 +8 342 pmps 362

He had a pretty good day yesterday. He has a vet appointment scheduled for +5 …really struggled with whether he should see vet or not, the stress for him is a lot. 24 hr of mostly steady blues making me wonder if going to vet is necessary….But I guess I better get to the bottom of the tail hair pulling.

Looking at his numbers after the flea treatment and change of food, I wonder if one or the other was the reason for his higher numbers.

Do you have to leave at +5 for the vet appointment or sooner?

ETA: You could ask the vet for a prescription for gabapentin. Helps calm cats down before vet visits, travel etc.

I’d leave at +4.5 to get to vet to appointment for 9:15am. It was the higher numbers ALONG with other symptoms that had me thinking infection or possible cystitis as you mentioned yesterday. I could cancel. But Murphy law says if I cancel today tomorrow his numbers will be through the roof and more symptoms
+1.5 191

Looks like bouncing. And he is trying to throw up hairball after large +4 snack. Still seeing evidence of tail hair pulling so will take to vet as planned to check things out leaving in 30 min.

Will take a few days to get results on urine culture so we decided we will start Baytril now just in case. If once results back no infection then will stop Baytril and consider anti-anxiety meds in case hair pulling is due to stress. She said treating for fleas was the right call at first signs of itching. Thanks for that recommendation Bhooma.

His weight is up to 4.5kg from 4.2 June 23 so that’s good.

His anal glads were perhaps “a little clogged” so she dealt with that, too.

He was a very good boy for them.

Will start Baytril today and move up to 2 units at pm.

Didn’t test BG when home as was elevated before we left and didn’t want to bug him more. He just wanted to run outside and see his friends. I’m expecting him to not visit me at my work desk as much as usual this afternoon until I’m forgiven!

I wonder if the anal gland could be the cause of hair pulling? I’ve never had a cat with that problem but have had dogs that have. They scoot on their bottom. One would tgem make funny head gestures.
Good luck with the increase!

Why does the vet think there could be a UTI? The hair pulling? Not sure you want to start Baytril without confirmation of an infection. Want to wait and see if the unclogging the anal glands takes care of the hair pulling?

I guess since results are going to take until at earliest Monday - more likely Tuesday she said I could wait for results or start now.

Given his previous UTI, higher numbers and excessive licking at his privates and tail pulling...it isn't an impossibility that it is a UTI. She also mentioned Baytril not the best antibiotic but that for where we are at it's the best option for Herman and maybe a longer course might have been better. He was scheduled for a follow up in two weeks so we just bumped that up to now.

Essentially she left it up to me if I wanted to start antibiotic treatment or wait for results.

We also talked about antianxiety medication in case stress is the culprit. She mentioned they take a least a week to take affect and we thought we would wait and see on that. Other than high numbers and tail pulling he has been happy, friendly, energetic, eating well, etc it's a tough call if anxiety is likely.

Food allergies were discussed and I told her I discontinued use of any of the newer varieties I had tried.

And I guess it could have been the anal glands. She said they weren't definitively the problem (weren't that bad) but were a little clogged.

Do you think I should wait? I see pros and cons to both options but I have no previous experience whatsoever with Diabetes so if yesterdays blue numbers could possibly mean an infection is not likely then I guess I should hold off on Baytril.

So hard - I just want to do the right thing for him.

He wasn't doing any scooting but he definitely sat sometimes with his bottom really tucked under him. So hard to know!

How about a middle ground? Give it today and maybe tomorrow to see if the tail pulling/licking of his privates stops after the declogging of the anal glands. If it doesn't, then start Baytril? I would have thought a UTI would manifest in some symptoms related to peeing. I don't know if the better numbers are from the food change/flea treatment or him just getting closer to a better dose.

@tiffmaxee what do you think?

@Bandit's Mom ...tech question...I have PDF's of his results from June 29 and I thought I would add them in to the spreadsheet. Could I just grab screen shots of the PDF's and past them into that tab? OR should I enter in the values line by line as you have done?

That sounds like a reasonable plan :)

Totally agree except I would give it a couple of days. Giving unnecessary antibiotics results in resistance to them when needed. I would have thought she would have don3 a urinalysis and culture and sensitivity if there was bacteria as Baytril might not even be the correct antibiotic.

I will hold off on Baytril. I don’t know what the specific tests she is running are…so much of this is over my head I’m not a vet I just trust she’s running the appropriate tests given our discussion. My invoice charges are for “urinary recheck - UA and collection”, “aerobic culture - follow up”, “liver function profile”. I’ll post previous test results (June 29) to my ss when I get a chance. It’s all so overwhelming with such a steep learning curve on everything.

editied to say I meant to quote @tiffmaxee but I messed that up.

FWIW, any only my two cents, Cleo's numbers are very much affected by her poop. The better the poop, the better numbers. I try to give her a feeding or two a week of Weruva's Truluxe On the Cat Wok. Its 3.8% carbs on ME basis and the carbs are from pumpkin and potato starch. It took a lot of experimenting with her to figure this out, and ECID, but Cleo reacts "itchier" with food that has carbs from tapioca, wheat, soy and corn gluten, but has responded well with carbs, even at a slightly higher %, from pumpkin, potato, sweet potato and chick peas.

Also, do you want to get one of those Feliway (or similar) collars and see if that helps with his anxiety?

Cleo has idiopathic cystitis brought on by (perceived) Stress. The Feliway Plug-In near her litter box has helped. Haven't tried the collar.

If you enter it line by line like I've done, you can add past/ future results and see trends.

Guess what I’m doing tonight. :coffee: Hope my “occasional dyslexia” doesn’t kick in while staring at those numbers!
Yes, that's why I don't want him to be started on them unless absolutely necessary.
Got it. We will wait and see a few days.

My reply to quotes is funky. Maybe from being on iPad.

Ooh a plug in option could be good. I’ll look for one.

Don't worry about it. Take a break till PMPS. Good luck with the increase.

If you need help entering the test results in his SS, I'm happy to do it for you. Let me know :)
You are too kind and have done so much already. I’ll enter in tonight  …leaving Herman be till pmps and increasing to 2u.
