Re: 8/10 Shadow AMPS 108

Morning Rhiannon!

How did Shadow do with her shot today? What gauge needle are you using? When we started out, I used the 30g and Gracie would always "meep" when I gave her the shot. I switched to 31g and now the Terumos I use seem super sharp...she doesn't have to be distracted by food for me to shoot. so if you aren't using the smaller needle size, it might be worth a try for her.

I know you were hoping she would continue with all green when you reduced but I think she still looks pretty good. With the exception of a couple numbers, she's in normal numbers under 120.

Have a great day. :-D

Re: 8/10 Shadow AMPS 108

Shadow took it today with her usual growl.
The syringes I have are 31 gauge, 5/16 short needles Ultra comfort but to tell you that I grabbed my box and just caught that they are Kroger brand. hmmm.
I have noticed that when I'm filling them and looking thru all my extra lenses, it always looks like the black rubber stopper
has shavings, almost as if it is separating a teenie tiny bit inside with the fluid. I wasn't sure if its just the angle I'm looking
at my filled syringe or a distortion. I've got a magnifying glass and my 2.5 reading glasses on.
Now that I see kroger.....

I ordered the Terumo's yesterday where you gave someone else the link to try those instead. They seem better quality controlled.
This box I have is more than half gone anyway.

Shadow's numbers are curious. I have wondered if her stress might be inflating her amps and pmps some simply because she
knows the routine now. When it's shot time, I go off to the kitchen and get food and syringe.
She is sitting here by the couch in her half tower and she watches me go to the kitchen and she watches me come back.
Her tail is always thumping.
And then we had the mini rebellion, now she's back to growling but sitting there. She did get a thorough scolding the other day.

I'm not near as fast as I need to be, trying to find a place to stick, trying to tent someone on her side and realizing my angle
isn't what they say it should be so trying to reposition quickly. I don't want to shoot her perpendicular to her spine but thats how she'll move so that I have to change to get it right and not shoot myself.
And then am I missing again?

I need a pause button so everything can freeze frame but me so I can get it done right. ohmygod_smile

Glad Shadow is back to usual. We are using Kroger syringes too, same specs as yours. I have not seen bits inside the syringe, I have notived the lubricant coating on the needle is blobby on some of them. I don't know who manufactures these syringes for Kroger, carton says Covidien AG owns the Ultra Comfort trademark. The syringe wrapper says distributed by CanAm Care LLC, looks like CanAm packs for various private label brands. Please let me know how you think they compare to the Terumos.

Re: 8/10 Shadow AMPS 108 +2~99 +3~84 +4~75

CanAm makes Monojects. I have a longstanding battle with them. At first, they were really good but then I started noticing the zero line mark was all over the place....sometimes above where it should be, sometimes way below. Then Ella and I both noticed that the needle was no longer coming down through the hub into the insulin. When it doesn't do that, then the kitty can get some of the insulin in the hub. How much...it varies because the hubs were not consistent. That's when I switched to the Terumos. They have no hub.

All of the syringes are inaccurate....the zero line on all of them varies ridiculously. That's why I now use digital calipers to dose. Even with the Terumos. But I have found the Terumos to be somewhat more accurate than the MJs. When we used a micropipettor to determine dose in the Monojects, 1u from the MJ actually measured 14.6microliters or 1.46u in the micropipettor. That same amount in the Terumos actually was pretty darn close to the 1.5u line....so the MJs were way off.

I don't know if Shadow is as sensitive to small changes as Gracie but even 0.5drop difference with Gracie can make a big difference in her numbers. There are a few other kitties like this as well.

Re: 8/10 Shadow AMPS 108 +2~99 +3~84 +4~75

Well hurry up terumo's.

I've wondered about the tiniest differences in Shadow's dose but not because of the syringes.
I've just wondered about my own ability to be consistent without you telling me that the lines might not be true.
I'll have to go find a different set of calipers, mine don't lock.
Without adding my 10x magnifying glass to my reading glasses, I can barely see a difference between .5 and .75.
My eyesight is going faster now that I'm using a stronger reading glass.
( I wish I were a candidate for laser surgery  )
I recheck my syringe at least 4 times before deciding I "think" I've got it. I've especially wondered with this past week
in numbers if I'm being consistent enough now that my vision is subjective.
It certainly doesn't feel objective anymore.

I've been tempted to fatten Shadow's dose a hair which would look more like .75 and I tell myself to wait and stay the course.
I do feel like Shadow's probably that sensitive. She hasn't had any tolerance for any other drugs she's ever been given which
fortunately have been few in number.

Re: 8/10 Shadow AMPS 108 +2~99 +3~84 +4~75

I got my Digital Calipers at Harbor Freight. Made all the difference in the world. I also use their 3X LED magnifying glass....the light makes a huge difference for me. Of course, if you are using a 10X, you have a lot more magnification.

The other thing.....I don't tent Gracie's skin. I roll it. I lift the hair/skin up with my left hand (I'm right handed) and then I roll my left hand towards her head so the back of my hand is facing her head. This allows me to see skin so I can be sure I am injecting into skin and not fur. Takes a little practice but I like it so much more than tenting when it comes to injections. However, I do tent when I give subqs to Gus.

Re: 8/10 Shadow PMPS 114

Well what you were saying really hits home now.
I moved to the couch , cleaned all my visual tools and sat here next to my husband to load the syringe.
I've been in a different place prepping prior to this.

He is just starting to need reading glasses but his distance vision is still 20/20 or better. And from the other side of the
couch he could see the bubble that I was trying to get out.
I thought I had flicked it up and shot it out but he could still see one up in the very top.

So shadow might not be getting her actual dose. I'm even blinder than I thought.
I thought I got the bubble out yesterday too.

guess I have to order some stronger reading glasses too.
I keep having to go up to the next magnification. I should be blind by the time we get to remission. nailbite_smile

He can help me check in the evenings but he goes to work 2 hrs before her shot in the mornings.
