Hi all. Sending vines and prayers for kitties and family members who need them today.

I am feeding lovey higher protein foods ( fancy feast and weruva). Is it better to lower the protein for an older cat to help the kidneys? I was only using moderate fat since she needed to lose a little weight and had pancreatitis before. I wanted to wean her off the fancy feast since it is so high phosphorous. Some of the low carb foods seem so high in fat and maybe too low in protein? How does lower protein affect BG?

She does like the weruva paw lickin chicken (3%) and funk in the trunk (8%) sometimes which are lower phosphorous, high protein, and moderate fat.

Can anyone recommend a better quality low carb food that might be good for Lovey and a MC good that I can use when she is low? She is almost 12. I have a copy of Dr. Pearson's September 2012 list.
 
Hi Catherine. The food question is such a difficult one. What is Lovey's creatinine level? If low the risk of kidney disease is low at this time. The fat issue is still being debated with pancreatitis. While I wouldn't want to feed a high fat food, I don't think limiting it is a big concern. Did Lovey have an acute attack or is it chronic pancreatitis? Does she have IBD a well? With Max who has been chronic for years, food doesn't seem to be his issue. For some the type of protein or feeding grain free makes all the difference. Whenever protein is cut they add grains or carbs or fat to bring up the calories. I'll be interested to see what others have to say as I too am always looking for a higher quality food that is good for Max and that he will eat.

By the way, 12 is not so old. Max will be 17 in September!! How is Lovey doing? I know she wasn't well the other day and hope she is back to normal.
 
The latest research says the protein isn't as big of a problem as once thought with older kitties.

The phosphorus levels are more important when it comes to keeping kidneys healthier

I was at my brother-in-laws for dinner. Dinner was later than expected so I was about 1 hour and 20 minutes late with Lovey's shot. I was pleasantly surprised when she her preshot 160 when 7 hours before she was 141.

I feed Tigger Weruva fowl ball (4%) - I did feed Paw-lickin' but needed a little higher carb for his regular.
Weruva On the Cat Wok is also 4%, but it includes beef which I don't use. Tigger also gets Petcurean Go! fit-n-free (5%) which seems to have alot of liver in it.

I use Weruva Green Eggs (9%) as a higher regular carb. Weruva also has a 9% Peking Ducken.

My cats also like Fromm which is I think in the 5-6% range.

Petcurean also has Go! Sensitivity & Shine Duck Pate, which is 9%, & a Fit-n-Free Chicken Turkey & Trout stew that I think is 18%, but I'm not sure.

Both Fromm & Petcurean have detailed nutritional information on their websites, so you could see if any of their fuds are ok for kidney cats.

For a higher carb, I feed Soulistic (Petco website) Good karma - Green can - 18% shredded chicken like Weruva. Tigger loves this & it doesn't give him as messy a rear end as the FF high carb.

Another thing I do is add water to all my canned fuds to make a thick (or thin depending upon which cat) slurry - most of mine are ok with that - I add nutritional yeast to keep it flavorful.

Thanks so much for the ideas. I have never heard of Fromm and Petcurean. I am going to look on their websites. Thanks a lot. Lovey sometime leaves the chicken shreds behind when eating Paw Licken Chicken lately. I wonder if the shreds are hard for her to eat. Are Fromm and Petucurean pates or shredded?

Both the Go! and the Fromm brands are pate-style. The Go! stew-style is 'chinks', though. About 1/2 of mine (8 rescues) love the Go! (strong chicken-liver / liverwurst odor) & 1/2 of mine won't touch it. They all like the Fromm, though. I believe both of these companies are from Canada.

My cats that like shredded chicken (about 1/2) all seem to prefer the Weruva "Fowl Ball" that has turkey & chicken - 4% carb over the 'Paw Lickin Chicken'.

Also, for a kidney cat, if you are concerned about protein levels there is Lotus canned cat food, which is grain-free pate, but slightly lower in protein (they use more pea protein), higher carbs (I think 6-7%) It has an odd consistency though, I had to add alot of water, & most of my cats decided after a year or so they didn't like it. I agree with Chris though that a lot of new data is not necessarily implicating protein (unless there would be insufficient daily water intake).

Another supplement I used with very good results for our last kidney cat was Azodyl- my vet recommended it. I think Marje's tried it with different results, you might ask her if there is anything else she liked better.
It's been a few years since we've had a kidney cat, so I'm out of the loop for new supplements,etc.
