My big guy is surfing away and I couldn't be happier. Of course then I start thinking things like what if the meter is wrong? Why do people have multiple meters? I only have one that I've used since his dx in December. Do I need to replace it? Do they go bad? Yep - I'm a mom who worries so any answers you have for me are very much appreciated. But it's not that I want to spend any more $$$$ than necessary but if I do, in fact, need an additional meter I will go out today and get one.

I have a "back up" meter. It's the same meter (Bayer Contour) that I routinely use so if something happens to the one I routinely use, the strips work. Every so often, someone will post that they put the meter in the microwave (seriously!) it fell into a sink full of water, etc. It's the reason for a back-up. Given your schedule, if your meter is going to die, it's going to happen in the middle of the night when no place is open and Elian is in low numbers. Have a back-up!

It's so good to see you shooting lower numbers an even better, how well Elian is doing.

Oy I'm a nervous wreck as I get ready to climb into bed. Shot Elian at 80; he's down to 74 +1.25. Will continue testing tonight but have to be up and out very early again. Luckily I'll be back home in time for his morning test/shot.

WOOT! Go Elian! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: You shot a 79 this morning which went to 55 at +2. Paws crossed he'll do a similar surf tonight.

I have a backup meter that is the same as my regular meter (and a spare battery) as well as a different model, so 3 meters. But I have to get the strips for my main meter across the border and the second model is in case I don't have time to get the cheaper strips.

You shot a bigger dose at an 87 a few days ago, and a bigger dose than that one on an 86 a week or so before that....so you aren't crazy at all! Just test as you can, set alarms or whatever. You've pretty much got this routine "down", right? :-D

I am very grateful you stayed on my case and got me shooting low! Thank you!!!!

If my SS says 79 for this am that's a mistake - I shot 89. I'll go take a look and correct if necessary!

E is sitting and staring at me - he is unbelievable about testing. I guess he knows another is coming up shortly and he's ready and waiting. I am incredibly lucky he is so cooperative. We have one spot on my bedroom floor where all testing and shooting takes place. He can be anywhere - as soon as he hears the click of the test strip container open up he comes right to "our spot" and lays down and his two brothers join him - giving him head butts and then kissing his boo boo after. Seriously. It still amazes me after all these months.

Bob's been OTJ for 2 years, and if he hears the zipper on the meter case open, he comes running, lays down and waits for the test. Sometimes I do it just to mess with his head. :lol: No poke, just want to see him come running. Of course, I give him a treat anyway.

Oh you are so bad!!!! But dontcha just love how cooperative they are? My other two absolutely wont let me test them - I've tried - just to see what a 'normal' non-diabetic test looks like! I'm so grateful it was Elian and not them that got the dx!!!

I don't recall, but were you one of the ones that says, I can't test my cat or it will hurt him if I test and he will hate me for it? Oh look at his poor ears, they are bruised and bloody and sore. I am hurting the cat and can't do this.....

any of that sound familiar?

And now look - Elian reminds you when it's time to test and comes to his spot and assumes testing position.....hmmm does that seem like it really hurts him?

this is just what we try to get across to all newbies who are too afraid of hurting the cat so they don't want to test......

If you keep this up or rather down, you may find yourself in the not so distant future going on OTJ trial....now wouldn't that be wonderful -- just saying.

I don't remember being one of those who worried about him hurting - I could've been but don't think so. He's always been cooperative and I was told I can use my antibiotic pain reliever stuff on his ear. But I do feel bad that 99% of his testing is done in his right ear. Rarely do I get blood from the left which, coincidentally, is the ear that he had a growth removed from when he had his dental several months ago. I mentioned it to his vet and she said that there may be a problem with the blood flow in that ear. Poor guy. But I massage and kiss his good ear and his brothers kiss it after each poke! But from your mouth to whoever's ears - would love to see E on an OTJ trial in the future!!! That's been our goal all along.

68 +2 - looks like I might get a few zzzz's in - in between lotsa tests tonight! I'll be keeping a close eye on my guy.

I went back and looked at your very first post, Susie.... I don't see where you might have worried about testing, but I did see where your original vet's office staff told you that "testing is torture" and that you needed to "stay off the internet!" :lol: So happy you went with us "crazy interweb cat people" instead of listening to that "advice" ;-)

Oh what a nightmare that entire staff/office was. I laugh as I walk to the trash can every time I receive a reminder in the mail from them that it's time for Elian to come in for a fructosamine test! And I get a sick little pleasure knowing they're wasting their money in mailings/postage because they're too stupid to take us out of their system .... even after the not so nice letter I hand delivered to them upon firing them!!!

PS yes, I'm so happy to have found all of you and am actually following all of your advice!

You should mark them "return to sender" with a note that says "Elian's 2-week average BG is ... if you'd like to convert that to your frustosamine values. Thanks!"

Way to go Elian! Mommabean is doing great too!

China's left ear is her bleeder....lots of kitties have one that bleeds better than the other without anything "weird" going on...trying to get a teeny little drop out of her right ear is like...well....getting blood out of a turnip :lol: :lol:

Thanks Chris - I had no idea. And my vet sounded as though she was surprised when I mentioned it. Hmmmm. I love my two vets but there's a reason I avoid them ( and drs in general!) whenever possible.

Well YOU may not have been one of the many who said those things, but there are so many who come to the board and DO say those things. Maybe one day you can pop over to the Health Forum and look for a newbie's post who is talking about hurting/torturing the cat with testing and tell them your story.

I'm sure they would appreciate reading how Elian is.

You can even tell them that he is a one ear only tester too! ;-) ;-)

Good job with these numbers and catching his 42!
 
Thanks Hillary. I will try to check out the other forum and add my $.02 but I do my posting from my phone and tend to get severe headaches when I'm on too long which is why I'm not able to read or post much on other people's condos and I feel bad about that. But I will make a point of checking it out. I'm glad I caught the 42 also and re-read about reductions so ..... Elian has been dx less than a year; went below 50 one time; got 1 unit, down from 1.25, this morning. Woo hoo!
