Morgaine had such lovely low blues all day yesterday and then she climbed after her PMPS. I even fed her very low carb food last night hoping to avoid a higher BG in the AM but she was 216. I am frustrated but I think it may have been a fur shot. She has thick fur and I always wonder about that so who knows. We shall see if she comes down today. Meanwhile I need to cut her fur where I give injections on both sides of her body. I am using the 5/16 syringes which are tiny and I always pinch the skin up and make a nice tent but it is hard to know what is going on with numbers like that and very thick fur.

We did have a lovely day yesterday where there was no PD/PU. It was nice to see her back to normal. I know we will get there but it is frustrating to be doing so well and then to lose it. I also know you have all been there. Wish I could give her some Humalog to bring her down but I know it is not possible to do such a thing. Humalog onset is 15 minutes but it is powerful insulin and not appropriate for kitties.

Re: 8/1 Morgaine AMPS 216 so frustrating

Sorry to hear about the possible fur shot. I know how you feel -- I'm the queen of fur shots! And mine is short haired!

Don't beat yourself up. After all, tomorrow is another day!

Re: 8/1 Morgaine AMPS 216 so frustrating

It would never be appropriate to give a cat a fast-acting insulin when their PS number is a low 200. This is not a bad number!! It could just be a mini bounce or, as you suspect, maybe a fur shot. Taking into consideration the 20% variability a meter is allowed to have, this could actually be a blue number. Morgaine is doing soooo well, there's really no reason to be frustrated. She's consistently in healing numbers and I bet her dose continues to decrease. Remember...as the mantra goes...FD is a marathon, not a sprint (I've kinda grown to hate that saying myself, but it is true!!).

Re: 8/1 Morgaine AMPS 216 so frustrating

I understand your frustration well.....I think most people here do. 216 is really NOT a bad number, yes it is yellow - BUT it is almost blue. Like Patty said....this is a marathon not a sprint.......hang in there. If there was a fur shot, oh well, we all have had them.....you mentioned using the shorter needles, have you considered using the 1/2 inch needles? A vet tech once told me, that you shouldn't use the short needles on a cat, unless the cat is just skin and bones. A friend gave me some of her insulin syringes to tide me over until I got my new box and they were the 5/16 inch needles......Zoe's blood sugar values changed.....went up a bit, I switched back to the longer needles, within a few cycles Zoe's numbers were back to where they had been running. Just a thought........

Re: 8/1 Morgaine AMPS 216 so frustrating

I do have some 1/2" syringes and was using those at first but others recommended the 5/16 inch and I order a bunch of those. I will see how this goes. Perhaps the longer needle is a better choice for a thick furred kitty like Morgaine. I have a whole box of them.

I know her numbers are not bad but there have been frustrations about how she sems to grab a new dose increase, come down and then goes up again or just coasts at a number in the mid blues. As long as I see improvement I am okay and I am more convinced that I gave a fur shot. I will check her BG later. Since there is nothing to do but wait for this to come down, I see no reason to poke her ears just to satisfy my curiosity. Yes, FD is a marathon and I am in it for however long it takes. Morgaine is doing well. I know that. We are only into our 6th week on insulin.

Re: 8/1 Morgaine AMPS 216 so frustrating

It is a dance not a straight line. So many factors involved. The others are right, low yellow is not a bad bounce. I'd still try to get a mid cycle test. They can drop really suddenly!

I always test her at +6 but not at +3 anymore because she seems to be pretty consistent and I feed her at +3. We are still struggling with ear pricks and I need to let her ears rest unless there is a real need to test her. I am hopeful we will get to the point where I am testing because she is in the green sometimes. Her nadirs have been consistently +6 and +12. I know that can change but I do not think she is in any danger of going too low right now.

She has not been drinking much today so that is a good sign.

ETA: +6 128 so she came down nicely and I do think she got a fur shot last night.

Thanks for all the comments/support.
