7 days OTJ with lovely numbers but he seems to not be eating as much

Hey all! Leo has been off the juice for 8 days now with levels hovering between 100-120, which I’m quite happy about.
I just noticed a tiny bit last night and this morning that he’s not eating as much of his food as he normally does. He’s usually finicky and it’s hard to measure exactly how much he eats but my graduation is soon and I’m really busy so I was wondering if anyone thinks it could be something crucial enough that I have to tend to it RIGHT AWAY? His behavior is great if not especially affectionate, and going to the vet at the moment is quite an ordeal for me. I know his teeth need work but if he keeps eating about half his meal should I drop everything and go or is it okay to wait like 2 weeks?

If he’s acting “normal” for your kitty then I’d say ok to wait. Is his breath bad or what issues is he having with his teeth? Sorry if you mentioned before as I forget...

I took him to a vet in the city who initially diagnosed him as diabetic, and also told me he needed teeth extracted. He came to me stray and hasn’t been to the vet much since, and his breath has always been terrible.
When I took him home to my normal vet, she said normally a cats teeth have to be pretty bad for her to decide to take them out.
He really needs a good check up, esp since he’s been OTJ for a bit now, but everything is really literally happening at once right now so I’m just a worried cat mom wondering if I should drop everything to take him/if deciding to wait means I’m sacrificing my cats health for my schoolwork.
Hard decisions when you’re thrown such a curveball of a disease!
 
Yes indeed! Can you look at the teeth? I guess if he’s in pain then I would try to take him. It’s usually one trip in the morning at opening time & they call you later in the day to come pick him up. Depending on when you’re available to do that is the big question. Also making sure a drowsy cat stays safe at home for the evening. I’ve had some that are high & tend to pace instead is just sleeping?!? Crazy but yes “please just lay & sleep!” I’ve kept them in one room to be safe. Whatever you decide, good luck. Be sure & ask if he needs extra pain med for after the procedure. My vet has given the extended release type that supposedly lasts 3 days. just keep an eye on his eating habits if you decide to wait. If he’s chewing effortlessly, maybe it’s not that bad. They keep us guessing, don’t they!
 
I agree if he doesn't seem in pain maybe you could wait a few days, probably not much , but I would monitor his BG a little bit closer just in case they start to raise then you may need to take him but as they said is usually leaving him for a few hours at the vet and picking him up the same day, you may have to watch him a little bit during the afternoon or lock him in a room where he can not go up in something and fall because they do tend to be a little bit drowsy after sedation and maybe give him some pain meds or antibiotics for a few days after
 
A cat in recent remission will eat less as their hunger and appetite regulates to normal after being hungry and thirsty all the time. Give it a few days, you'll get to a new normal but if he doesn't eat at all or seems to have trouble eating then by all means see the vet.
 
Thanks for that info, it definitely makes sense! He’s definitely his normal self, I just notice that he walks away from his food before finishing it. He eats roughly half but it varies!
 
Kudos on the OTJ. You are making us jealous.

It is easy to get wrapped up in our Leos, isn't it? When they have diabetes, we end up getting focused on all the little stuff. I would measure his weight over time and see if he is maintaining it. Plus, as others have said, normal cats and cats in remission - usually eat less. That is unless they are pigs like our Little Dude, who has an infinite stomach.

Ah what a cute guy! I always loved the name Leo :) and yes it is hard not to overthink the little things.. today I realized they’ve been having a different flavor of their food lately and I’m wondering if that could be it! Cats are silly finicky little creatures
 
We have 3 cats. Chinus is really picky. Both Leo and Little Dude will eat just about anything.

I agree with you that the food change could be it. Heck, if Leo-betus is maintaining weight and not getting chubby, feed him whatever flavor he likes.

Little Dude was a neighborhood "feral" 2 years ago. He was originally skittish and could not be approached. But I turned him into a lovebug. Now when he is on the couch and you just walk up and touch him, he starts purring. To think that he maybe escaped someone's house or never even had an owner - it's a shame some cats never get adopted.
 
My leo came to me in a similar way! We live in the woods with a huge feral colony but they’re always black and white cats and quite scared of humans, until one day leo just showed up on my deck! He was about a year old when he found me and an absolute bunny ever since. Weird how animals find us, right?
