So while his OTJ trial is going great, the bad news is that he's been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. We ran bloods on Wednesday and I got the results back yesterday afternoon.

Despite some pretty bad looking numbers, right now, he has no actual symptoms other than drinking a lot of water. So I guess I'll be learning all about kidney disease next. :nailbiting:

RBC 6.91
Monocytes 1.504

Creatinnie 5.9 :arghh:
BUN 72

Official Glucose was 103 :cool: - he didn't like being taken to the vet so despite that stress and crying all the way there, pretty happy with this :)

I'm so sorry about the kidney disease dx. You and Cinna got this just like you God the FD!!:cat::bighug::bighug:

(Btw i used to teach pre-k...I know a ton of number songs LOL)

Sorry about the CKD Dx, but you'll figure it out. Glad he's having no symptoms and all the water drinking must help.
 
Sorry about the CKD, but there are lots of people here who have dealt with it. With proper treatment, kitties can still live years with this condition. If you haven't already, immerse yourself in http://www.felinecrf.org/ I found it quite handy to put data on the Labs tab of the spreadsheet. That helped me see trends in lab numbers. So much so I do it for the other cats now.

It'll be so much easier to manage if Cinna is off the juice. Looks like he's determined to do that. :D
 
Happy day 12. So sorry Cinna is throwing a new curve your way, just as you are seeing the light at the end of the FD tunnel. :( Hang in there, he's clearly a fighter, and with you by his side, he's sure to do great. :bighug:
 
Hi Ali, sorry about the CKD diagnosis. The good thing is that with the diabetes being managed that's less stress on his kidneys. The CKD would explain the higher drinking and a kidney infection can also inflate kidney values. His other renal values like phosphorus, calcium, potassium etc are good, so it's one less thing to worry about.

The site linked by Wendy is really good. Almost too comprehensive. I have been reading relevant portions but yet to make a dent in it. B&B are both CKD stage 2/3. Did your vet recommend any treatment? Fluids? That website also has an excellent support group and they will guide you about fluids etc if your vet hasn't already.

Thanks! I did find that site and have been reading up, there is a lot there to consume. I was hoping to get a little break from health dramas!

What was phosphorus?

Also, has he had thyroid checked lately?
Phosphorus was 4.6 (the previous test on 5/6 was 3.8, so it's come up a bit but still in range)

I don't think thyroid was included in this test (full labs are here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GtrmH3lLbj_Ks_h_AzNiCPFHrZVZsbw2/view), but, a full panel was run on 5/6 and they were allegedly fine (I don't have a copy of that, but, I think I might get them to email me it).

I've had 2 cats diagnosed & the second time I kept her on the raw diet & had many good years after. She lived to 20, probably 6 years after initial diagnosis. I went for happy life over years & was fortunate to get both.
Wow, 6 years! That's awesome. That's my approach as well, no point having a long life if you are miserable!

Oh im so sorry Ali that Cinna got DX. But he is doing so well on OTJ! I will pray for you two!

He's snuggled in my lap now, he was purring up a storm earlier when we spent time outside on the deck. :cat:

Good to see you @Bandit's Mom! My vet suggested diet (low protein) and fluids are really all that can be done; from what I understand less protein means less work for the kidneys, but, that probably means higher carb food which is bad for FD. I'm not sure what role fluids play, I need to read up more about those. I'm also wondering if trying to get him off budesonide would help prevent further strain on the kidneys. Lots to read and consider. I'm really thankful that right now he's doing really well clincally. Apart from drinking too much, hes's doing great, better than he has been in several months!

It's good your vet suggested fluids. I think they really really helped Bandit's CKD. How much does he suggest you give in a day?

There aren't very many people on Tanya's support group who have experience with cats that have diabetes and CKD - really strange! I would think there would be quite a few cats with both!
 
I'm sorry about the DX about the kidney disease, with proper treatment cats can live years. Tyler's brother who are as not diabetic had CKD and after being diagnosed he lasted about 7 more years . I also gave fluids at home ,they weren't hard at all to do.

Because many cats with chronic renal disease eventually become so dehydrated that they are unable to drink enough water, the fluids keep them hydrated while helping their body deal with toxins. Although subQ fluids could lengthen your cats life by slowing additional damage to her kidneys,
 
I don't know if Cinna can eat this food but you can
these foods for both diabetes and CKD
With weruva foods
You want the metabolizable energy profile percentage of carbs to be less than 10%, and the phosphorus which Weruva lists in Minerals to be less than 250 mg per 100 cals. So you have to look at two different places in the Weruva charts.

Down the road I had to start giving a phosphate binder aluminum hydroxide to his wet food
to every meal he ate. You would need to talk to your vet if and when it's needed

Please wait for your vet to say it's OK to give fluids. In some cases (such as heart issues) it is not appropriate. I found out the hard way with Neko, in spite of the vet's suggestion to start fluids. :(
