Yesterday was more or less a repeat of the day before. NICE blue amps :-D , only to have Mannie head up up at +10 right into a pink pmps :? . The amps was great, a nice low blue. I wish I knew if that was coming up from a low numbers or headed down from the mid-level blue surf he was on. Only Mannie knows, an he isn't talking! Never a dull moment with Mannie: just when I think I figure the pattern out he changes it. Now we seem intent upon pink pmps's... so....... once again we follow his lead. Lubs ya big guy! Think blue think green OK? cat_pet_icon

All is well in MannieLand. :-D :-D We have had some incredible sunny days here. Mannie has decided that this is cool, and has been celebrating them in Mannie style: napping in sun beams on the deck, one or two yard patrols. His favorite activity though has been napping. nanner napping. Spread-eagle nanner napping. circle nanner napping. pile 'em high nanner napping. scatter them everywhere nanner napping. squinty eyed don't touch my nanners napping. just plain napping.  Welcome to the lazy days of summer in MannieLand.  Even Elsa is in summer mode: the kitty choir has been strangely absent, and we are, once again, without any whack-a-thons. ;-) Ah that's OK - sometimes things are meant to evolve. This morning we had a great test, shoot and clean plate club (the president founder and CEO can still claim his title WOO HOO!) - AND the auto feeder still continues to be used by Mannie (although sometimes a little reminder is in order, like today), and Elsa still thinks it has her name on it, yet again.... so once again, as previous days, I can safely say: Some things just never change. Normalcy in MannieLand. :-D How cool is that?

Have a great day everyone. I'm not too sure what will come to be here today. I may go hiking... the weather is perfect, so we shall see how the morning progresses. :-D

Hey everybody! You guys wanna go to the beach? Maybe try some of them boogie board thingies? and build sand castles and catch crabs and clams and stuff? maybe if we catch enough crabs and clams we could make one of the clam bake pit thingies... they are kinda cool! I got some kites today too - you wanna fly kites? Let me know - I am ready for anything!! ~~ Mannie

And completely OT: Here are some photos from DGS's family and my adventure yesterday - Cola Creek. It was a beautiful day there!! I've also included the FaceBook links for anyone who wants to see all the photos: Nicholas at Coal Creek, with the family

Hi Michelle, thanks for the extra ~O) ~O) glad to hear all is normalcy in MannieLand, and glad to see Mannie is coming down! So funny with all the sleeping in different places. Mags is spending all her free time sleeping, too. Maybe she should just come over there and hang out with Mannie and Elsa! Great pics of Coal Creek, and I love the first one of him in his Daddy's backpack, is it. Beautiful pics in FB, too. He is so happy. If the weather is nice, it would be a shame to not take a hike today. Housework can wait.

Mannie, a beach day sounds like fun and some kite flyin, too. I have some extra boogie boards I'll bring along. I'll see ya soon at the curb, Mags

Hey, Mannie, how about ditching these pinks?! They don't do you justice. Remember, permission slips for the bean really don't have to be so drastic!

I can totally picture Mannie doing a spread eagle nap. Makes me giggle.

Hope you get to go hiking and enjoy the beautiful day! I love seeing your pics everyday. You are surrounded by so many beautiful sites!

Hi Michelle. Me too, hope you enjoyed your hike. I'm glad Mannie came down from that yucky amps. Sometimes we just have to grit our teeth, and thank the furball for letting us go out.
Hey, ya gotta put a positive spin on it.

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

364 @ PMPS, and the ugliest continues. Mannie's appy is back to being a bit off. I did get the normal amount of fuds in him for pmps. DH said he ate what was given at +4, and +6, but I had a few issues with his +2. so.... fun!

Question on Giardia: Has anyone here dealt with this? I was reading Mannie's labs just to get my head around things upcoming for his U/S on Friday. When I got the the fecal report it was noted that he tested positive for Giardia. I really do wonder how the vet missed this, unless she as so concerned over the x-rays stuf that it was overlooked. Anyways - I called them when I got home today and got some meds for Mannie: Panacur: oral for 10 days. Some of the symptoms for Giardia are what I have been dealing with, off on on: loose stools, etc. It can cause nausea and vomiting, though we really haven't had the vomiting. I asked the vet today if his appy issues could be related. She said that was possible. Anyways - have anyone here dealt with Giardia? Can it cause appy problems? Mannie's comes and goes, isn't consistent, as is the loose stools.

and on side note - had a nice hike today - lots of waterfalls, small ones, to be had. Fun times! I will post come photos in Mannie's condo tomorrow.

hi Ann - anytime on the ~O) Yep, normalcy here. I hope to see some yellows tonight - paws crossed. I hate yellow days.  On the sleeping thing - hey: why not! Thanks on the pics, and e=yes the first one he is in his dad's back pack. And yes - I did go to day. Mannie is so high, the weather is so nice, so why not.

Hi Amy - looks like this will be a very slow come on down - not too sure is he did today or not. We hope for better tonight. Paws crossed!

Hi Roni - I so agree - not too sure he does... yet. :-D And thanks - great time yesterday, and this one today was nice too!

Hi Reagan - I so agree. I really do dislike pink. :? I so agree on those permission slips - blue works too! :-D and thanks on the pics - we are lucky: so many great places to see here. and YUPP: hiked today - fun!!

Hi Ann - YUPP: hike! and I so agree on the housework.... maybe tomorrow....

Hi Barb - Thanks - I did. It was a little long, but I had a nice time: waterfalls and creeks - WOO HOO! and yes: that I did: gritted my teeth and said thanks for the permission slip. :-D Love those positive spins!

Tess - cool!! we will do that then - clambake!! SWEET! I think so to - we be the bestest clam diggers! See you! ~~ Mannie

Moonie!! AWESOME!! That is so cool! NICE on the bikini!! ~~ Mannie

Maggie -we is ON! Thanks for the extra boogie boards!! See you at the curb! ~ Mannie

Mannie - You look so much better in blues and greens - let's ditch those pinks, okay?

Hugs -

I'm up for digging clams/crabs and hanging out on the beach. I'll bring my skim board, too! See you then - Hershey

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Mannie Mannie....do we need to send up the ropes??

Wow...that is something for her to miss. Holy cow. A lot of the parasites have similar symptoms....diarrhea, gas, smelly poo, funny colored poo...kind of olive colored, sometimes vomiting. They are hard to diagnose because unless they are causing a flare-up, the tests can be negative. We had this problem with Tobey....his stool samples kept coming up negative but he had all the symptoms. We tried Panacur first because she suspected Giardia. But it didn't help so then we went to Albon which is best for Coccidia. It worked but most of these treatments require repeating in order to totally eradicate the parasite. It's usually acquired by drinking water that has the parasites in it. It's easily transmittable so you might want to have Elsa checked. It takes constant cleaning of LBs, too.

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Hi Marje - yep, what I thought. How could they miss that? well, he has his meds now, and we will be more than diligent with the LB's... He did test positive for this. great.... and yes on the repeat treatments. so I have been told. and another possible yes on Elsa... great there too.... Thanks for the info!

Hi Libby - I so agree. Not a big fan of pink. BLECH! Thanks on the hugs!!

Hey Hershey - Way cool on the skim board! can I try it? please? I will be real careful! :-D See you - this will be fun! woo hoo! calm digging!! ~ Mannie

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Mannie - Of COURSE, you can try the skim board. I share with my buddies!! Fun times - Hershey

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Geez, if you are looking for a cause for diarrhea, that is something to miss in the report! At least you have a probable cause now! I don't know about it in cats, but in humans all the symptoms would fit. I know when wilderness canoing we had to be really careful about the water.

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Well poo on the buggy poo! I know it's frustrating to have a bugus amungus, but wouldn't that be swell if that is all that is causing his appy/poo issues!

Zener had giardia as a tiny kitten. He was a rescue, still with blue eyes, and the giardia made him really sick, he got down to 1 1/4 lbs. I wish I could remember what he was treated with back then. I think he may have had two rounds of the ABs for giardia, but it cleared it up and no reoccurrence. Our other kitty we got from the rescue place (was in the same cage with Zener) tested negative.

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Hi Michelle, glad you got some answers on the Giardia from Marje. That is something the Vet missed it. Now you have some answers to the one issue and can treat it. Sending vines for our Mannie. Glad you got your hike in today, too.

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Michelle, I have nothing to add, as I've never known anyone with the bug. I just wanted to send my best wishes for Mannie to get rid of this nasty stuff. You're a good and vigilent bean, and will do everything required to make him well.
If being surrounded with Auntie love will do it, he will get better and be doing banana dances before you know it.
You don't know where he could have picked it up, I'm assuming.
Is it transmittable to humans....like through saliva, or a less than pristine hiny?

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Hi guys - many thanks!

Hi Ann - yeah, do you think? I'm trying not to come down on their case, but shesshhhh! I think she was so concerned with the x-ray images that the fecal test was missed - plus when I called today it was not in sequence in his file with the other lab stuff. seriously? Well, shook a few cages there today - nicely. GOOD THING I READ LAB REPORTS - only wish I'd read the whole thing, and not just the radiology, last week. Yeah, the symptoms do fit, so hopefully this is our answer....

Hi Anne - buggy poo   so so true! and bugus amungus     again! yes, it would be nice if this is all that we are dealing with.... in a way: paws crossed! Thanks on Zener's story - reassuring. Elsa is due for her annual in a few weeks, so we will be diligent on have her poo checked: though I have read that the cysts are not always passed with each poo.... great....

Hi Ann - me too! and yes on the vet - yes - answers now, so I hope this is all we are dealing with . :-D

Hershey!! YOU ARE THE BEST!!! Thanks - I am so excited. :-D :-D See you soon! ~~ Mannie

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Come down Mannie! You dont look anything lovely in that purple colour!

In HK we treat giardia with a course of Panacur too. It is very common when we have recued stray kitties. 100% recovery after the treatment. Hope Mannie get rid of those nasty little beast soon!

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Hi Barb - missed yours sorry...

No clue where he picked it up, but it is transmitted through fecal excretions. The cysts apparently live for a long time - could be anywhere: lawn, neighbor, etc... I have no clue. And since cats are notorious butt cleaners I need to wash his butt at least daily.   That ought to be fun..... as Mannie's hiny is less than pristine....  The jury is out on if it is transferable to humans. I suppose it could be.... if any of us develop rather nasty diarrhea we will know. so far - that is a negative!  Thanks do much for your well wishes!!!!!

Hi Helen - so do I!! The sooner the better. He got his forst dose tonight and wasn't too ahppy about that. oh well, I hope I am successful getting it in his mouth and not all down his front.  and thanks - me too on the pinks!

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Hey Mannie, time to come on down now. You've shown us those pinky colours when we are all looking for blue from you.

When I worked at the local shelter we had a can diagnosed with Giardia. Some lovely person had dumped him at a local vet in a box. He had the soft poos and I remember some issue with foods too. It took a while for it to be diagnosed, and he stayed at a vet for a while and they finally figured out what it was. He never seemed to get it back but he did have to take meds for a while but I don't remember what they were. My copy of the Cat Owners Home Veterinary Handbook says Flagyl or febedazole. Apparently it is usually mild in cats and responds well to treatment. The book says the same as Marj did about cleaning, and also to get rid of any standing water outside he might have access to. The cat was adopted by one of our local radio personalities and last I saw him he had rainbow coloured nail caps (came back for boarding for a bit).

Re: 7/7 Mannie PMPS 364 - ? on Giardia

Hi Wendy and thanks (!!) for the info. I did remove the standing water outside - there are two. yep, Mannie has meds for a while too - 10 days and then retest a week after that. so hopefully we can nip this one in the bud, and be rid of it! Love the story of your shelter cat (except the dumped part...) - and the rainbow nail caps. Way cool! and yes: blech on the pinks! Blue Mannie, OK?

Giardia infection
Giardia; Traveler's diarrhea - giardiasis
Last reviewed: May 30, 2012.

Giardiasis is an infection of the small intestine caused by a tiny parasite called Giardia lamblia.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors
The parasite lives in soil, food, and water. It may also be found on surfaces that have come into contact with animal or human waste.

You may become infected if you:

•Are exposed to a family member with giardiasis

•Drink water from lakes or streams where animals such as beavers and muskrats, or domestic animals such as sheep, have left their waste

•Eat raw or undercooked food that has been contaminated

•Have direct person-to-person contact in day care centers, long-term care homes, or nursing homes

•Have unprotected anal sex

Travelers are at risk for giardiasis throughout the world. Campers and hikers are at risk if they drink untreated water from streams and lakes.

Symptoms
The time between infection and symptoms is 7 - 14 days.

Some people with Giardia have no symptoms.

Diarrhea is the main symptom. Other symptoms include:

•Gas or bloating

•Headache

•Loss of appetite

•Low-grade fever

•Nausea

•Weight loss and loss of body fluids

Some people who have had Giardia infections for a long time continue having symptoms even after the infection is gone.

Sounds like there is a risk of transmission from animal faeces to humans - just wash your hands between hiny washes and making sandwiches, and no unprotected butt sex with him ok

So great you know what's going on now and can fix it :-D

Loved the napping reports!

Have I missed de beach, I wanna use one of dem kites as a hang glider, way fun - Vyktor

Morning Serryn - thanks so much for the info! Yep, sure looks like this nasty little bug may be our culprit. on your comments:    Too funny on the napping reports - funny to watch. :-D

Vyktor!! DUDE! Never to late! OOOOOOOOO - I like that idea: kites as hang gliders. That would be fun! See you! ~ Mannie

Hi Michelle,
Just catching up and saw this about giardia. Edward had it. It lasted for more than a year. He got it from brushing his teeth in lake water. It's also known as "beaver fever". He only had the diarrhea, not the other symptoms, but had all sorts of tests before giardia was the diagnosis. He took the medications, but it was really time that cured it. We later found out that one of the doctors up here prescribes a horse medicine that clears it right up. We don't know the name of it, however. But you might ask your vet.

Hope all is well otherwise. I'll try to catch up with you tonight. Just don't have time now!!

Ella

p.s. Claudia says that the horse version of metroniazol(?) is Marquis paste (or something like that and that it really works and in a much shorer time.
