Good morning all! I've decided I'm going to be lazy today and just hang out with the cats! What can I say? I'm a party animal...

I'm a bit concerned about Bob and just want to find out if this is normal. Before he was diagnosed, he was EXTREMELY lethargic and was drinking a ton of water. Since he has been on insulin, he has done better, but still not quite back to his normal self. He just seems to go up and down. Sometimes he gets a burst of energy and acts like his normal self, but it doesn't seem to last. He continues to have many days (including the last 3) of sleeping ALOT, a very warm, dry nose, and very hot ears (maybe because he's sleeping so much?). He doesn't really do anything but get up to eat, drink or go to LB. He doesn't sit in the window or play with the other kitties or anything. Is this normal for an unregulated cat? His drinking seems normal and his appetite is good. He will be going to the vet on Wed for little check-up and ketone test.

Hope everyone enjoys their Sunday!

I suspect that Bob may not be feeling as good as he could given some of the swings in his numbers. Some kitties take both a while to get their numbers into a better range and for them to start to re-acclimate to being in better numbers.

If you can stalk Bob to the litter box, you can test for ketones at home (vs. paying the vet). You need Ketostix which are available at any pharmacy.. Alternatively you can order a Novomax meter BG/ketone meter and test Bob's blood for ketones. Ketone strips are expensive which is why most of us use the urine test strips.

Thanks Sienne - I just want him back to his normal, cheery self. Sweet little boy. I bought one of the Target meters and noticed that on the screen it shows Ketones. Do you know if that meter checks for Ketones?

Usually the meters are just advising you to check for ketones when the BG test is over a certain range.

Hey Dyana - I just read the manual and that's what it said - it just warns you to check for ketones. Bob is not only a difficult eater, he is suspicous as well. He does pee in the same spot so maybe I could put a keto strip in the litter. How might I do that? Just leave the testing part sticking up out of the litter?

I did order the novmax and ketone test strips. Should be here in a couple of days. So I guess at this moment I will have a total of 6 meters! do you know where would I send the extra meters or test strips if wanted to donate them?

there is a supply closet on here that you could post what you have,My Lucky didn't play for awhile now he picks on the others and will run around and make lots of noise, it took some time for this to happen. He will get up and go when ready you know can't push a cat MOL

You could take some plastic wrap and make an indentation in the litter in the spot where he goes and lay the plastic wrap there, and bury the ends if you want in the litter. And then dip the test strip in the small pool of pee.

At the top of the right of every page there is a link to donate meters for Newbie Kits.

Never mind. I thought the link was where you donate meters, but I just checked and I don't see anything about where to send them.
Maybe they don't give out meters to Newbies anymore?
