Shadow is doing better. No more vomiting! I think his numbers are looking better also. still trying to get in some additional tests during the night. The last few nights have been difficult with the dogs and all the fireworks...

I'm hoping someone can explain how Shadow's blood sugars can go down and up and down again mid cycle? For example on 7/3 531, 469, 397, 410, 353, 272.... or are those all within the difference that's allowable on a meter?

My husband and I will be going away soon for 5 days... How does everyone handle that? I have people who will be able to come by and give his insulin- but not sure that I can get people to test... it took me long enough to be able to consistently get tests....Also nervous about being exactly 12 hrs apart...

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

What you're seeing with the wide variation in numbers are bounces. Shadow's body has gotten accustomed to being in high numbers. When numbers come down into a low range, into a range that's lower than what he's used to, or drop quickly, it causes the liver and pancreas to overreact. A stored form of glucose along with counterregulatory hormones are released. This causes numbers to spike upward. This is what we refer to as a bounce.

People handle their cat care differently. What I would recommend is reducing Shadow's dose to insure that your kitty is safe while your gone. This is especially the case if your petsitter isn't going to or able to test. We also recommend that the dose is one that is on a "line" on the syringe. I usually make up a sample syringe using a colored liquid (e.g., juice, milk, water with food coloring) so there's no question what the dose looks like. This can be critical if the person shooting is a friend or family member vs. a vet tech. You should also have a "no shot" number. In other words, if the person can test, this is a number when the sitter skips the shot.

When are you leaving?

Thanks for the suggestions. Right now Shadow is at 2.25- I do think I may be missing some lows.... Should I try putting him down to 2 units now so we see what he does? We leave in 2 weeks.

Really would be safer if you could showed them how to test at least before shots, assure them it does not hurt Shadow and for safety. Bring them back something from vacation as a thank you
