Hi L&LL,
Our friend went back to NYC this morning and we have spent the day de-compressing and doing lots of chores. We had a good 4th of July and great weather for two days in a row!!! Rusty ate pretty well because I was able to find several cans of the "old" Wellness Chicken in our local petfood store (which is also a laundrymat!). Yesterday, the 4th, however, he really seemed to be under the weather. We were out all day at a picnic at a friend's camp and when we got home at PMPS he was in his basket and didn't want to come out (he finally did, however, but his breathing wasn't good in the evening. Today he seems normal and really enjoyed a lot of outdoor time. AM shot was "short" (insulin left in the syringe).
Tomorrow is one of our favorite paddles: the Route of the 7 Carries. The carries will probably be muddy because rain is expected tonight and tomorrow afternoon. We are hoping to finish before the rain begins. Rusty will hold the fort and eat Wellness chicken (old recipe) from his automat.
On Monday we took our friend to the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. What an amazing place! The animals and birds of prey that one can observe were either injured and rescued and could not be released to the wild, or had spent time with humans and therefore could not be released to the wild. The animals that will eventually be released are not on display so as to minimize human interaction, but of the permanent residents, we saw wolves, coyotes, porcupine, black bears, other mammals and many species of raptors: 2 Bald Eagles, 2 Golden Eagles, a Snowy Owl, 3 Great Horned Owls, a Barn Owl, 2 Ravens, At least 8 species of Hawk. Wow. It was great. Check out the website (see link above). The couple who have established this refuge are animal rehabilitators who purchased the forest land and live on the site. They employ about 15 ecology and biology students at Paul Smiths College as interns. It was a most educational experience.
Tired tonight and have to get ready for tomorrow's paddle. We hope that all kitties and beans are well.
