Seeing a number start in a six had me nervous.
I can imagine. :) It's a matter of getting used to them. As long as you are testing and feeding, you have the tools to keep him safe.
67 and 71 are basically the same number given meter variance. Ironically, there is more downward momentum when they start higher and are clearing a bounce than when you shoot low and get a beautiful flat Lantus cycle like tonight.

Do you have an autofeeder? If not, you want to get him into the habit of eating from one so that you know that he has food available and will eat when you are not at home or asleep.

Thanks! Yes, happy numbers tonight but not yet used to that!

We don’t have an auto feeder but he’s always been a good grazer. When we feed at shot time he’ll come back over the next couple hours and we do the same at lunch and before bed (+5/6ish). If we will be out we leave out extra. He rarely finishes it so almost always has food besides the countdown to PS tests.

Looks like you are good for the night! :-)
Feeding higher carbs can shorten duration of the insulin. It's like pressing the brakes of a moving car. So you want to avoid that unless absolutely necessary.

Don’t want to slow down the car! So I should only use the carbs when he’s below 50? I feel like I read others here feeding carbs in the 60’s/70’s to prevent dropping further but will start paying attention to when/why they might be.

Yes, you do use carbs to "flatten the curve", but that's typically early in the cycle when the insulin action is strongest. The idea is to prevent diving - which can also trigger bouncing. Later in the cycle it takes less carbs to keep the numbers up than earlier in the cycle because insulin action is on the wane.
