Ugh, I hope not! I'll let someone more experienced with insulin weigh in, I just wanted to say I hope he steadies out and those BG numbers go back down. Could he be stressed about anything today?

Is Magellan still under house arrest? Perhaps that is contributing to his stress. I agree with granadilla to have a Lantus expert advise.

He is up set at being on house arest yes and he is mad at not getting fuds yet.... or should I say late daddy forgot the food and sent him back!

it has also been VERY, VERY hot here day time highs in the high 90's to 100+ and no ac.
He may just be po'd re: house-arrest & delayed meal. Regarding the heat, even with AC on, when it's especially hot here, I notice Bat-Bat's #s will run a bit higher, too. I have seen two slightly different target ranges posted here on FDMB; am still unsure which is the more correct:

Human glucometer #s [30%-40% lower than readings on Alpha Trak2] followed by (AlphaTrak #s):
Off insulin: 40-120 mg/dL (56-168 mg/dL on AlphaTrak)
On insulin: 50-130 mg/dL (70-182 mg/dL on AlphaTrak)

50 - 130 mg/dL (2.8 - 7.2 mmol/L) {71-83 to 186-217 mg/dL for an AlphaTrak}
- On insulin - great control when following a tight regulation protocol.
- Off insulin - normal numbers. (May even go as low as the upper 30s (1.7 mmol/L){60s for an AlphaTrak}; if not on insulin, this can be safe.

(Maybe one is outdated? I have no clue.)

You might want to wait until next pre-shot time to see how that # is before you consider giving him a tiny bump of insulin, as he may settle back down for you yet.

We are on an Alpha Trak meter; as Bat-Bat has been teetering on the brink for a while now with "as needed" mini-dosing, I don't shoot her unless she rises beyond the 150-160-ish range - again, that's Alpha Trak #s. (But so far, she's only managed 6 days in a row without needing a bump.
<sigh>)

I wouldn't panic just yet. You can see the occasional BG 'wobble' on the way to officially qualifying for official remission status. If there's a steady drift upwards that is when one needs to terminate the trial and reinstate insulin treatment.

The heat could very well have influenced the numbers, as could a myriad of other factors (brewing up a poop, for example).

Try cooling him down a little. Wet a cloth with tepid water, wring it out and dampen his coat down a little with it. Repeat again later if he needs it.

Assuming he's not ketone-prone and you're sure there isn't any other health issue involved, I'd be inclined to continue with the trial for at least another 24 hours (unless his BG really starts climbing). My suggestion only. Other members may have a different view.

Did you mean to post in Main Health or in the Lantus/Lev ISG? I was looking for your post in the LL group today and couldn't find one, but here ya are in Main Health!

Yesterday you said:
Yes he is canned only... the only time he sees Evo is when his sugars dip too low.

and I just wanted to make sure that you understood that if he's not getting a shot, he can't go "too low" and doesn't need any high carbing. I think you meant you gave him EVO before when he was on insulin, but just in case that's not what you meant, I wanted to clarify it. Cats off of insulin can get in the 30's and be fine. I only know of one situation where the cat had an unusual medical condition - not diabetes - and the cat had a hypo without getting insulin. But that's a rare thing and I wouldn't expect it to have anything to do with Magellan.

Right now he should be getting ONLY low carb canned food, no dry, no high carb, and ideally small frequent meals to avoid overburdening his pancreas. Is there any chance he got into some contraband - any people food? dog food? any high carb food?

In case you don't have it, here are the directions for the trial:

Here are the OTJ Trial Instructions:
Start the trial on the next green pre shot.

If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. If he/she is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He/she may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him/her the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.
Good luck with the trial!!!

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!
See you tomorrow! Fingers crossed that he comes back down into green.

Sweet thanks for the information Julie... no I did not have it before as for the Evo kibble he only gets it when he is low/very low sugar not normally In other words what you said was correct off insulin he does not see the Evo kibble at all... his normal food is FF classics and friskies pateBTW I just got back from seeing the new Mission impossible move :) :) :) :woot: :woot: :woot: :D :D :D :cat: :cat: :cat: :) :) :)

Hi Julia! we are in a OTJ trial here as well. I notice when Chi Chi has higher numbers that she is a bit constipated, and her numbers will drop after she poops. Could Magellan be constipated? Is he pooping normal? Good luck and paws crossed this is just a blip on the otj radar!

That is very possible but I am not sure how to fix the problem... I hope that is so as well, he seems to run a bit high in the am and get back to norms in the evening... Odd

He's a living being. His body will have natural rhythms, and so will his BG levels.

What do Magellan's poops look like?

.

EDITED TO ADD:

A lot of cats here tend to run lower at night.

They are smallish, dark and rather hard, they also smell well like carnivore poop... but that is to be expected, no indications of old blood smell or color nor any unusual fomyness.

Perhaps try introducing a little canned plain pumpkin into his food - tiny amounts at first - maybe half a teaspoon total per day. Try recording the time between poops, too (doesn't need to be down to the nanosecond - just roughly how many hours he goes between bowel movements). It can give you a pointer to any gut motility problems - something that may be impared somewhat in diabetics. Maybe let your vet know, too.

Julia, pumpkin helps Marshmallow with diarrhea and I hear it works well for some kitties who are constipated too. I give her some every night. A can of pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix) will last about 5-7 days in the fridge. To make it last longer, I freeze the pumpkin in ice cube trays (about one tablespoon in each section of an ice tray), then put all the pumpkin cubes in a baggie in the freezer. I defrost a cube every night and she loves it.

Pumpkin does help with constipation. It's supposed to be good for the pancreas as well (not found any research papers to confirm that yet). I've read that you need to potentially watch potassium levels when giving it regularly.

NB - adding fibre can potentially lower blood glucose levels. Watch your doses.

I tried the pumpkin cubes but I found it too faffy. (Anxiety disorders and fiddly things ain't a good mix.) Now I use 150ml clip-lock lidded food containers. When I open a new can of pumpkin, I put enough to last Saoirse a few days into each container and then freeze them.

Ok.. did not know that pumpkin messed with potassium levels, I want to know why cant things ever be simple???

With Saoirse's kidney insufficiency to sort out now, I'm having to try to learn more about stuff like this. So many things have knock-on effects elsewhere. With my PTSD it's a desperate struggle to try and assimilate the information I need because I have terrible trouble trying to read things (the text just swims in front of me, then my brain can't cope and it shuts down completely). I'm failing badly. :(

Hugs I understand the frustration sometimes Im am reading information and all at once it is no longer English (or does not seem to be cause I cant understand it at all) We will get through this you, me and our fur children.... Just take the information in small bites dont try and read it all at once.. I find that helps the most. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Oh boy, do I understand that. Right now I'm in a world of faffiness with Marshmallow. She has IBD and the meds are only somewhat helping, so I've started mixing probiotics into her pumpkin. So every night I:

1) Defrost a pumpkin cube
2) Mix in the probiotics

You'd think step 3 would be to just put it in a bowl and she'd eat it. But no, she won't eat anything that even resembles wet food. She sits next to me while I'm preparing her pumpkin (if she's in another room she comes running when she hears me prepare it), but if I try give it to her in a bowl, she just walks away. So I put it in a syringe and she follows me to the couch, staring at the syringe, then she jumps in my lap and settles down to lap up the pumpkin/probiotic mix from the syringe.

NOT AT ALL too much of a hassle! :banghead:

Last night I put pumpkin "meatballs" in her dry food and she actually ate them! For the first time! :woot: Hopefully I can slowly get her to eat all of the pumpkin on her own. Last week I was out of town and I had to give my friends/petsitters a long list of how to medicate Princess Fussypants. Oh the things we do for our furballs.
