Question - Ollie is a super picky eater. He is only interested in a flavor for about a meal and a half and he eats the fish flavors the best. I've seen the list of FF flavors that are LC. How LC are they? Are they okay to feed everyday. He likes them a lot better than the Wellness. I know we are only supposed to feed fish a couple of times a week. Why is that? Can I feed fish for right now and then slowly transition him to other flavors? He's lost about 2 lbs in a little over 2 weeks....

Hi Klaree,

Congratulations on the decrease! You can absolutely feed FF everyday. That is all my cats eat, both Napoleon and my civvie. Not sure about the reasoning behind the fish flavors, but I have heard that too and only feed them fish 2 times a week, maybe 3. As long as you go for the "classic" FF flavors they are all under 10% carbs. Check out this link http://binkyspage.tripod.com/canfood.html - it will list all of the FF flavors and their carb content. Beautiful blue numbers for Ollie lately. We feed a lot of FF too. Tess prefers it to Wellness. :YMSIGH: I actually try to stick to flavors that are <5% and there are several. It just depends on what he likes. There are some nice low Sophisticat flavors from Petsmart, too. And although they advertise it as a sale price I've never seen FF there for over 50 cents a can.

There are 2 problems with feeding too much fish: 1) fish tend to build up heavy metals in their fat (i.e. mercury, etc.) ; 2) cats can get fixated on fish flavors and won't eat anything else.

Congrats indeed on the dosecrease!
Rebound can last 72 hours, but I don't think Ollie will wait too too long before dipping his toes into green again.

I also feed a lot of FF (and admitely, some Special Kitty little cans too). Tizon does not like Wellness at all. Fish too often is also not good because of the phosphrous content - harder on the kidneys. If you want to experiment, you can mix fish and chicken flavours to try to transition Ollie to eating more poultry.

ETA - you can also find little dried up fish pieces - same place as the freeze dry chicken - that might help to season the chicken to taste (or at least smell) like fish. I get mine at Walmart.

Thanks a bunch everyone!! I never looked at the old Janet and Binky's canned food page, just the new. I wondered where the FF data was! I think I'll just try to feed him whatever he'll eat for now and then sneakily add some chxn, turkey, beef, etc. to get him off all fish. Glad you think he'll start testing the green waters again, although I have to say it has been nice to catch up on sleep!
