After Gus' vet refused to see him today ((too busy!!) I took him to the ER vet. Long story short, he has a UTI and is on Cefuroxime. I never heard of that being used in cases of feline infections, but the vet said that there have been good results and it is much, much easier on the gut. So, I guess I should begin the search, again, for a vet who gives a s..t. Not looking for special attention, just SOME attention when there is a health issue that can't be scheduled. At any rate, Gus is eating very well, playing, and napping in his usal place, in front of the deck windows. Totally asymptomatic except for the blood in his urine. Dodged another bullet. Thank you for all the healing thoughts and prayers.

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+2=356 UTI

It's a cephalosporine and they are frequently used in cats for UTIs.

I guess I can understand that your vet may have had a full day of appointments but that they leave themselves no space for treating an acute illness strikes me as bad practice management. You might find out if the vet from the ER has a practice somewhere.

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+2=356 UTI

I hope Gus is on the mend and back to his old kitty self in no time. Sending Gus some healing vibes.

I agree, time to find a vet that cares.

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+2=356 UTI

i've never had our vet not say that they would work a sick pet into the schedule. new vet time.

glad you found out what was causing gus' problem - it no doubt was connected to his BG numbers as well. poor little guy. sending good health wishes to our buddy gus.

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+2=356 UTI

SO GLAD you got a treatable diagnosis!

And shame on your vet. There's been plenty of times that I've had to wait because they had an emergency.
In your vet's defense - was it the person answering the phone that turned you away without running your situation by the vet to let him make the decision whether or not he was too busy??

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+2=356 UTI

So sorry Gus has a UTI; I agree that it's time to research for another Vet. Gus couldn't wait for Monday, so great on your part getting him to the ER. I hope he starts feeling better. Good thoughts and healing vines to Gus. Hugs

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+6=340

The vet's receptionist put me on hold and when she got back on the line, she told me that there were no open appointments for today. I'm assuming she checked with the vet. She asked if I needed the phone # of the ER. I agree with you , Sienne, that a good practice would leave some room for patients who need to be seen when the office is open. Maybe I'm being too sensitive about it but, it makes me feel as if the vet really doesn't care that much about Gus after all. I am thankful that he's being treated and I'll just have to seek out another vet. Perhaps one who has a smaller practice and a little more time. cat(2)_steam

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+6=340

aw..I don't know your vet...but i'm offended that they didnt take more interest...

Guster...we lubs you, buddy...and we would make time for you!!

glad the ER could help...but it hits the pocketbook hard...

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+6=340

I'm glad you got Gus in and got some ABs. Too bad you can't send your regular vet the ER bill. I'm like Sienne....maybe he couldn't see him but a call would have been nice. Our vet has worked until 10 at night to see anyone who has emergencies...she doesn't have to do it every night...but she's willing to do it. Having said that, I know they have lives and have to draw the line somewhere but...not returning a phone call? Please!!!

Hope he feels better and comes down soon.

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+6=340

thanks bev, i wondered if that was it. punkin has always been a cuddler - when i sat down he jumped on my lap. everytime. not even on my lap, really - punkin always wanted to be on your chest and breathing in your face. sleeeeeppppp molecules, sent right in through your nose, straight to your brain . . . it usually put me out and then he got held for a long time. i used to walk around holding him on my hip like a 2 year old. so it's been especially weird now that if i pick him up, he jumps down. he's moving around easily enough - not like anya, of course, but he goes up and down the stairs and he jumps up on the sofa or to sleep on the coffee table. the coffee table is his favorite spot now - either sprawled there or on the floor.

i think i'll ask monday about trying some bupe for him - if he's uncomfortable maybe that would help and it would at least let me know if that was it or not.

and yes, perhaps a less-busy vet practice would be the thing.

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+6=340

I am glad you got him to ER & he could be treated..Our vet receptionist also can be tart, but usually they can get us in--now that Moonie is getting older, I would like a vet that's a little more compassionate..
Well, I can dream, cant I?--Hope Gus feel a whole lot better ASAP, and comes back down to nice numbers for you--Hugs & Healing Vines from us!!

Re: 7/30 Gus AMPS HI/+6=340

I'm so glad Gus has something easily treated!! Shame on your vet!! What goes around, comes around. You'd think he'd make time for a cat with other chronic medical issues. I sure hope you find a more compassionate vet!! They are hard to find!

Thanks to everyone who gave us support. Gus has a big tummyful of FF and is snoring away. He's not got a care in the world and that's the way it should be. I-)
