Good morning/afternoon LL. All is well in Zener's domain and he seems to be back on his slide. Liz had her hands full this morning cleaning up from overnight pukus pandemonious. Seems both kitties decided on a grass cleanse. Both kitties seem fine now. Poo patrol has the day off, deposits in the LB. Where's the fun in that?

Zener is enjoying his morning outside in his cabana in the cool shade and has slid down from last night's bounce to cool numbers already. :-D And I am watching the mama Northern Flicker feeding suet from one of our feeders to her two very hungry and demanding BIG babies! I was wondering why I needed to put a new suet cake in that feeder every morning, now I know! I tried to get a picture, but no such luck.

+2 205, 1PP, 3mg Zobaline, 0.5oz 10%

We broke our streak of 67 moisture-less days yesterday with 0.01inch of rain at our official weather recording station, 70 would have been the all time longest period with no moisture. It wasn't enough to get anything wet, so the favorite spots to do big business in our dusty backyard are still up to Zener's standards. We are bone dry, but rain is on the way. And because of our extreme fire danger, no fireworks of any sort. I am sure animals and their beans all over town are grateful!

Wishing everyone sunny weather if you are gray and damp, and cool breezes if you are in the heat wave. Happy Tuesday LL.

I know; that's not the poo patrol report I was expecting!

Anne, so sorry about the grass cleanse for both kitties, but glad all is okay! It almost sounds like a healthy vomit! :-D
How sweet with the Mama Northern Flicker feeding her babies. I hope you can get a pic when possible. Have a nice day. That's a nice blue there at the +4. I wonder what Zener has planned for the rest of the day.

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312;+1 296;+2 205;~4 144

Seems both kitties decided on a grass cleanse.

You are sweet putting suet out every day for them. We have flickers up here with a red spot on the nape of their neck. I love them. If I put suet up, swarms of starlings, cowbirds, and redwing blackbirds gang up. Its bad enough with the black oil seed - the feeders empty by end of day. Wish I could just feed tiny songbirds.

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312;+1 296;+2 205;~4 144;~6 135

Anne, thanks for sending the cool breezes this way. We got 2 whole drops of rain, but the breeze feels great to do yard work.
Love the 'grass cleanse"
I've been watching a male wren feeding his woman. He sits on the box and sings, and she pokes her head out to accept food. So cute.
 Hehe on not reporting poo in the LBs.

@Ann & Maggie - sorry for the very unexciting poo patrol report. Perhaps tomorrow will be better. I will work on getting a picture, those birdies do not stay still for long! As for Zener...could be another slide day.

@Karrie - our kitties keep us endlessly entertained! And so do the birds! The bird feeding started several years ago when Liz was going to be in Switzerland for a semester on sabbatical. That is when we first met our AC. We had her come talk with the kitties about Liz being away. She told us the kitties were worried they would be bored because Liz is the kitty toy creator and supreme player. The kitties thought a few feeders to watch birds through the window would help. And we started enjoying it too and kept it up. We don't have starlings, cowbirds or blackbirds so it's not too bad with other birds eating everything up. We do get some obnoxious pigeons and ravens, so how and what we feed has changed overtime. This summer it's mostly goldfinches, Cassin's finches, pygmy nuthatches, house finches, stellar jays, flickers, acorn & ladderback woodpeckers with an occasional robin and western bluebird. We've had lots of baby finches, flickers and stellar jays too. And we have hummingbirds - Anna's hummingbirds and the rufous on their way as soon as the rains start. We've also had an occasional visit from a Sharp Shinned Hawk which helps us keep the pigeons in check.

@Barb - you're welcome for the cool breezes, I've been waving that fan all day! Stay tuned for the further adventures of Detective Poo and Chief Inspector Crapdash!

We shall see if the mighty Z stays on the slide this afternoon, he's slowed up a little thank goodness!

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312;+1 296;+2 205;~4 144;~6 135

You know what? I'm kind of bored out here. Would you set up a feeder cam for my kitties too? I put food on the deck so the kitties sit and watch the greedy chipmunks and the brave birds come up in front of the sliding glass door and tease them. The chipmunks are crazy expensive. They don't stop.

I just looked up a few of the birds I haven't heard of before - stellar jay (WOW) and the acorn woodpecker are so cool! We have just the hairy and downy woodpeckers at our feeder. I planted honey suckle and bee balm so I see a few humming birds hover in front of the living room window but never when I'm outside. The pigmy nuthatch is so freaking adorable!!!!! I want bluebirds darnit!!!!

I just planted a fruited weeping mulberry to attract some more birds. I have to switch up my food to get rid of the black birds. Its crazy. I used to have a lot of finches, sparrows, chickadees, juncos and nuthatches feeding. Now its really just blackbirds.

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312;+1 296;+2 205;~4 144;~6 135

Oh, what a fun condo, I love birds too! Daphne never seems to even care about them, I guess because she was never an outdoor kitty, she doesn't know she's supposed to do, you know what!

I like the +6 Zener, can you give us a few more of them and some green maybe?

Thanks for visiting us today Anne.

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312;+1 296;+2 205;~4 144;~6 135

Yep, it looks like one of Zener's traditional slides into PMPS is in the works tonight! Here's hoping for a more exciting Poo Patrol report tomorrow...and fingers crossed the kitties are done with "the cleanse!"

We've never set up "traditional feeders", but in years past, we've had Mama Birds set up their nests in our hanging baskets on the porches. It's always very sweet to watch. A number of years ago, when we were putting an addition on our house, two baby blue jays fell into the then-open basement. With the neighborhood outdor cats on the prowl, we decided to let them stay, and forced the construction crew to work around them for 2 weeks, until they could really fly and get themselves back up into the trees. I've got some really cute pictures of those two little guys somewhere...

Have a great evening!!

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312;+1 296;+2 205;~4 144;~6 135

Great condo. It's been interesting to watch the Zener slide in action. I wonder where he'll go next?

Here's hoping you get a bit more rain. I think we've got enough for now so we'll send it your way in exchange for sunshine.

We have a hummingbird feeder in the window above where Neko eats. Endless entertainment while she waits for the autofeeder to do it's thing. We get rufous from March to August and then the occasional Anna. I love how they come up to the window and look in at you, especially if the feeder is empty and need refilling AGAIN. My favourite is a Japanese aralia tree. In the fall it gets berries which after they've been on the tree for a while, must get fermented. It's busy with robins, stellar jays, band-tailed pigeons, varied thrushes who seem to get drunk and sometimes have a problem flying after imbibing. They've been known to crash into the solarium so I have to put streamers on it then.

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312;+1 296;+2 205;~4 144;~6 135;+10 103

And the slide continues! Down he goes. Yucky on the pukus!! Grass will definitely do that. Glad they are feeling better! Woohoo on the rain, even .01 inch. Hope you get more. Then you can send some our way. Hope you have a great night!!

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312;+1 296;+2 205;~4 144;~6 135;+10 103

Looks like Zener is having a good day! Sorry y'all didn't get more rain - on Sunday, we got just enough rain to make the top of the grass damp. Hoping we get some soon, but not enough to rain out the fireworks tomorrow night. They had fireworks closer on the 30th and Doug offered to take us. Jessica and I agreed it was like 150 degrees (no, we don't exaggerate much ;-) ) and we didn't care to sit out and watch fireworks in that kind of heat. Hoping tomorrow night is cool enough to enjoy them!

Cool to hear about all the different birds y'all have! We have so many squirrels that we gave up on feeders. Hershey doesn't care about birds, either. Oreo likes watching them okay, but I think he actually prefers the squirrels.

Hope y'all have a great evening -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The Zener slide in action! Mannie - heads up dude - you need to pay attention!  Looks like a great pmps coming up.

Wow on the moisture - .01? how did they even measure that?

Very cool in the Flicker sighting. We get those here too - what a beautiful bird. I need to get my feeders going again....

have a great evening. I hope Zener does too!

You'd think we would be used to these late cycle Zener slides by now, but....

@Karrie - we would love to set up a cam to watch the kitties! Feeding chipmunks must be like feeding squirrels, a black hole. One year we had a bluebird family raise babies in one of our bird houses, then pygmy nuthatches and then swallows. It was a banner year, none before and none since!

@Barb - our kitties have never been very good hunters, so it's been a BIG surprise that Zener has such skills now! You are psychic, here are the greens!

@Amy - way to save the jays! And here you have as requested, a traditional Zener slide into PMPS. We hope tomorrow's poo report is more interesting than today!

@Wendy - and Zener slides into PMPS. We would love to trade some rain for sunshine! :-D So, you must be running a tree saloon of sorts for wild birds - do they get a designated flyer?

@Melissa & Mr T - down he goes, where he'll stop, nobody knows, including us... We'll test in another 20 minutes and decide which way to go. nailbite_smile

@Libby & Hershey too - good grief, Hershey must be melting in all your heat! Fireworks are no fun when it is too darn hot to enjoy them! We have special squirrels in our area called Abert squirrels, or tassel eared squirrels. They look a little bit like the offspring of a frisky rendezvous with a jack rabbit and a squirrel.

@Michelle & Mannie - you are so right, holy moly on this PMPS!!! I reckon the weather service measures this rain with a MJ syringe.

Stay tuned, we're getting another test in about 20 minutes.

Woohoo Z-man

I've heard about your heat wave down there, actually isn't it pretty much everywhere? (besides where Julie and Michelle live) I'll keep fingers, toes and paws crossed here that it rains for you.

Sorry to hear about the grass cleanse and pukus pandemonium this morning

Have a great evening everyone and stay cool

Re: 7/3 Zener AMPS 312; +11.5 52;+12 44 stall

oh zener zener zener zener. what great drama! that is a very dramatic way to end his day. start with a "grass cleanse" (which totally made me laugh!) and ending with a full moon slide. WAHOO!

we have most of those birds too - i love the stellar jays but OHMYGOSH are they ever loud! practically as bad as the crows. i feed all of them and we have a chickadee nest going on the porch, like most years. i'm have fence hanging from the porch eves in front of the bird house to protect it from the swallows because they will steal the nest and drive out the chickadees. it's a lot of work to provide the perfect environment for the little birdies!

@Tracy - we were so happy to read Leo's condo and all about his chat with Teri. Love it that he is all for staying in a hotel! :-D Thanks for stopping by to cheer Zener on! Despite our warm days, we always cool off to the low 50s here at 7000 feet in the summer, so great sleeping weather and no a/c needed!

Since he is below 50, we've given him a tiny bit of food in the form of a pill pocket with his evening meds. We are now in our hold and stall pattern. Will test again in 20 minutes. @-)

A most excellent point, we'll tell Zener he can't go to the full moon party if his numbers are so low. Maybe that will get him to a range we feel safe shooting! fll_moon

Those jays are really loud and the babies are even louder, it that is possible. They only have an "outdoor" voice. We love feeding and watching the birds, and of course, do it all to entertain our kitters.

@Helen - Mr Z always has a plan, his poor beans just never know what it is...other than to surprise us!

So, our stall lasted for 45 minutes. We fed a tiny bit of pill pocket and his evening meds when he was 44 @+12, then 20 minutes later he was up to 58, so no food and 20 minutes later he was 59. We looked at his SS for the end of the PM cycle 6/30 and had a little deja vu. Numbers were quite similar and then we stalled longer while he surfed the high 50s. So once we had the 2nd number in the high 50s without feeding, we channeled our inner German and shot. ohmygod_smile

We will get another test in 30 minutes just to be safe. Zener may be a little late to the full moon party tonight. He's a little worried he will miss the bus but we told him no party until his numbers were in the 60s.

His appy was a little slow so added a tiny sliver of appy stimulant, need to make sure the guy is eating enough to be safe. He didn't really care his numbers were low, he wasn't all that interested in eating and his beans were freaking! There was yard to patrol and bugs to chase.

@Michelle - you are so right, we need to be less scared and more focused on the beautiful numbers and how good the big guy is feeling! I'll be up late getting tests until all looks safe. Nothing early on tap for us in the morning, so I can sleep in!

We have a 4th get together at some neighbors at noon, but it's only a 10 minute walk away, so one of us can come back and test tomorrow if we need to, then a friend is coming over in the evening for grilled brats & burgers. It wil be a fun day. No fireworks permitted around here, far too dry, so no scared critters tomorrow.
