Good Morning LL! Bouncy morning for Tess, but what a nice run yesterday. The new pen seems to be working and this may be the equivalent of NDW as her shed is replaced w/ the new insulin.

Tess skipped another meal last night. It is often a struggle to get her to eat a full 5.5oz. a day. Dr Lisa says a cat will eat as much as it needs. Anyone know how many calories a cat should eat to maintain or even gain weight? Dr. Lisa gives this formula for starting a weight loss diet:
Required calories per day = [13.6 X optimal lean body weight in pounds] + 70
Most female cats should weigh a nice, lean 10 -11 pounds. Most male cats should fall into the 11 -13 pound range.
This formula provides a very generous starting point (usually far too generous)
But what about for weight maintenance ? Tess weighs a little over 8lbs., so [(13.6 x 8)+70=178.8 kcal/day] We've been trying to get her to eat on 5.5oz. can of Wellness which is 220kcal. It's often a struggle to get her to eat it all, but she isn't gaining weight. I'll cross post this in health too.

WCR Just 4 Ps today, Clean Plate Club, snuggles and brushing complete. Actually a little early on the fuds today!

Re: 7/29 Tess AMPS~338 +3~397 +8~285 ??kcal/day???

I've seen on Dr. Lisa's site that a cat needs, at a minimum, 15 kcal per pound of body weight to avoid hepatic lipidosis. So 15 x 8 =120 kcal/day minimum.

What I have found interesting is that Gracie is on less than that (I'm trying to get a little weight off) and she is losing about 1 oz per week which is less than Dr. Lisa's recommended weight loss/week based on a formula she has.

When I get a chance today, I'll find the page where she cites the 15kcal/pound.

eta: found it; Dr. Lisa says:

I have never seen a cat develop hepatic lipidosis when consuming at least 15 calories per pound per day. This number is figured on lean body weight, not fat weight.

If your cat weighs 18 pounds but really should weigh 12 pounds, please make sure that he is consuming at least ~180 calories per day. (12 pounds lean body mass X 15 calories/pound/day = ~180 calories/day)

If you have a small female cat that should only weigh 9 pounds, please make sure that she is consuming at least 135 calories per day.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for this discussion. I didn't know the details of any of this. Now I can figure out how Rusty can lose a little weight safely.

Good to see Tess coming down. Rusty is, too, after today's apparent fur shot.

Ni ni!

Just wanted to stop by and say hello!

Sorry to hear about your struggle with feeding Tess. I'm sure you've heard about tricks like sprinkling on parmesan and/or oregano.

Dr Lisa says a cat will eat as much as it needs.
That statement makes me really nervous. If a cat is sick, they're not going to eat as much as it needs. Junior's lack of appetite is most likely due to the hyperthyroid medication. And who knows what other diseases he might be dealing with. I try to stick with the formula and give him as much as he should be getting.

Good luck!

Hi guys - well sorry for the pink this AM, glad though that the pmps is yellow...maybe back to business soon for Tess.

Great discussion on food - I really need to take more care with what I feed Mannie - maybe more precise measurements... he definitely needs to drop a few pounds. it's nice to see a formula.
