So Lizzie & I are on our 4th day of being diagnosed with diabetes. I've written an intro post on the other board. Here is a summary of what we've been doing:

2 units Lantus in the am & pm, testing before each shot. I am a little concerned starting at this dose but her numbers have not gone down on it so I'm not sure. I only have experience with Humulin & PZI.

Feed 1.5 oz wet fancy feast before shots. Leave about 1/2 cup Purina d/m dry food out for her as needed. She used to eat dry food during the day with a small amount of wet at dinnertime. I'm planning on switching her to an all wet diet but i need to have a good base knowledge of how the Lantus is working for her.

Her teeth & gums are in poor condition but our vet wants to get her started to insulin before we take her in for a dental. I'm sure that will affect her numbers also.

Tomorrow I'll do a 3 hour hour curve on her again. Her poor ears though, she hates being poked & they are so bruised. We'll be fine though. Please see her spreadsheets for numbers. I'll post again tomorrow.

Hi Jacquie and Lizzie, welcome to Lantus Land, the greatest place you never wanted to be. You are doing great with the testing. Did you have another FD kitty before Lizzie? I am asking since you have experience with Humulin and PZI. One key difference with Lantus is the dosing is based on the nadir, not the pre-shot number so it's important to get at least one mid-cycle check. Any chance you could get a just-before-bed test at night? Numbers are usually lower at night so you are missing some important data.

Have you ever used Neosporin with pain relief ointment? You can put it on after the last poke at night. That helps heal their ears. You can also apply about 15 seconds of gentle pressure after the poke. That will help minimize bruising. We use a little piece of tissue.

People here are very generous with time and expertise so please ask lots of questions.

I had just written a long post covering many of the points that Liz made. The Board ate it.

So, rather than repeating the very good points that Liz made, first let me welcome you both to Lantus Land. This is an incredible group of people and their cats all of whom are more that willing to give generously of their time and knowledge to help you feel at home. The front end of this learning curve is huge so please, ask if your have questions. The starred, sticky notes at the top of the board are key to your understanding how Lantus and this Board work.

One of the harder aspect of Lantus will be not thinking about it like Humulin or PZI. Lantus is a depot-type of insulin which is why it has longer duration, overlap between doses, and a cumulative effect.

Please let us know how we can help.
