Good Morning LL

I'm afraid we're going to have higher numbers for a while today.
Checks started the day as usual, in the tub, drinking. Then he came out and puked.
Not the first time that he drank too much and upchucked water and a bit of food.

He then went into another room, and tried to finish puking, in a corner. I nudged him around, to hold a newspaper under him, and he fell over. I had barely touched him, because I'm always afraid of hurting him.

It was horrifying to see him in a ball, spine severely curved, with his butt exposed, trying to expel a large chunk of poop.
There was no way to me to get it out for him. Sorry to be so explicit!

I thought he was paralyzed at his back end, because he just lay there, curled up, but he was trying to deal with the poopy. His poor little hiney was huge.
Again....sorry. Trying to explain the gravity.

He wouldn't let me pick him up, to see if he could stand....growled horribly.
Thoughts of his sister, my precious Sammi, and her saddle thrombosis, ran thu my head. I lost her in a heartbeat.

He finally got up and walked to the kitchen, looking for breffis!!! WTH?!! ohmygod_smile
Apparently the chunk came out, when he stood up.
It had a tiny bit of blood and a bit of mucus....but it was like a brick inside.
Probably constipation from daily doses of bupe. He surely drinks enough water...all day long in the tub.

Here's where today's high numbers comes in. I gave him a tablespoon of nice fresh warm gravy, with 1/2 t. Miralax.
He begged for food, not gravy please....so gave a T. of the gravy food, instead of his FF low carb, because I knew he would eat it. He gobbled it up.

He's been fine ever since. He wasn't allowed back in tub, 'cause he would drink too much and possible puke again.

Sorry this is so long.
Thanks to anyone who reads it...especially since I didn't get to condos yesterday. :-D

Re: 7/28 Checkers amps 364 +3/308..long story

Hi Barb, oh my, how scary for you to see Checkers all in a ball and trying to have a poop! I can't imagine how hard that must have been for you!
And then for Checkers to stand up and the poo comes out okay! Sounds like he was constipated but amazing he was able to get it out, but then to want food? :o I know the Bupe can constipate. A lot of the Beans add Miralax every day for the kitties. I do, of course, because of Mags's megacolon. Do you add it every day, or has Dr. Dave suggested it.
Good idea with that gravy to get the Miralax in him. No problem with Checkers drinking his tub water, so that's good.

Re: 7/28 Checkers amps 364 +3/308..long story

Please talk to your vet about the constipation and whether using Miralax is appropriate. Any opioid is constipating. When I was taking pain meds after a surgery, the surgeon also told me to take a stool softener to prevent any problems.

You might want to start adding some coconut oil to Checkers food. It may help to "grease the skids." Check with Marje since she uses coconut oil with her guys.

Re: 7/28 Checkers amps 364 +3/308..long story

Ann, it was worrisome, 'cause I wanted to help and didn't know how.

Sienne,

The generic that I use for Tux is comparable to Miralax. It claims to soften stool, which is why I chose it, over something like hairball med, which might just slicken it.
I'm wondering now, if this isn't why he wasn't feeling so well yesterday, as this concrete ball was trying to move through his system. He's been on bupe for a very long time, and has not been constipated before.
All the prezzie in boxes are nice, except for Tux, who (whom?) I know makes small tootsie roll segments.

Thanks for the reminder, I forgot about the coconut oil. Checkers actually loves licking it off my hand.
I'm winging it though, and don't know for sure I'm doing the correct thing for either of them, so I will consult Dr Dave, when he gets back from vacation.

What a morning for you and Checkers. How awful to see him like that and not be able to help. I'm glad he's okay now and got the poop out. I guess he felt much better if he was asking for food.

Re: 7/28 Checkers amps 364 +3/308 +4/293

Oh, poor Checkers! He must have felt so much better w/ that out! We give Tess a little Miralax daily (about 1/8tsp) because her stools tend to be very dry too.

It doesn't hurt to give it long term. I'd use it now and check w/ Dr. Dave when he gets back. It won't hurt for a few days and it could help.

Re: 7/28 Checkers amps 364 +3/308 +4/293

Oh, ((Barb)) what a scary sight this morning! I'm glad Checkers seems to be feeling better. Good luck if you're able to use Miralax ~ it works wonders on my constipation-prone kitty.
Give your sweetie boy scritches from us.

Re: 7/28 Checkers amps 364 +3/308 +4/293

Hi Barb. I felt so sorry for Checkers and you when I read about his prezzie problem. The poor guy had to feel a lot better after getting that brick out of his body. Hope the coconut oil gives him some ease of movement. All things considered his numbers aren't that bad.

Have a great day Barb.

Yay for nice sized, soft tootsie rolls
I don't know if this morning's Miralax could have worked already. I hope this morning's problem was a one time thing.

I sure hope this day's flat yellow, doesn't mean green tomorrow. I have a doc appt, that will take hours. Two hours, just in travel time, round trip. Heaven only knows how long the wait and then procedure will be.

Depending on morning numbers, I might have to drag out the yummy gravy fuds.

Just for the record, he was drinking in tub all day. I did not give a stool softener, then deprive him of water.
He's a all-day-long, drinker, and was back in the tub in an hour. :-D

Re: 7/28 Checkers pmps 307

Oh, Barb, I'm sorry you had such a scary morning with Checks! My civvie, Frankie, is on a maintenance dose of the Miralax generic, too. I know how stressful it is when you just can't do anything at that moment to make them feel better. She has had similar incidents to Checks, although she didn't quite fall over. But she has puked after attempting to poo, she has aimlessly roamed looking for a place to poo after trying and trying in the box, she has layed down in complete exhaustion after failed attempts, she drags her butt after failed attempts, she has peed in cat beds in an effort to poo, and she has just stood up and dropped rock hard poos - then felt much better afterwards. I've tried taking her off a maintenance dose, and she eventually ends up in the same situation again. I have her on 1/8 tsp, twice a day, mixed in with her canned food and a lot of water. I don't give her a whole lot of food at once, because I want to be sure she gets the whole dose in. Once she finishes it, I give her more. I can really tell how much better it makes her feel to have things moving along, and I do think you're right...that's probably why he wasn't feeling great yesterday. Definitely talk to Dr Dave about this, but hooray for comfy poos tonight!!

Re: 7/28 Checkers pmps 307

(((Barb)))

that would have scared me to death!!! I'm so glad Checker is ok. I hope you can find out why he was constipated today and how to keep him from getting that way again.

Gus has been on bupe a long time and we almost have the opposite problem that his stools are sometimes too soft. To tell you the truth, I'd rather have it like that then to have him constipated with his arthritis. Even if they don't have arthritis, I think the constipation issue is just so stressful for them, for us.

I wasn't trying to discourage you from using R. We just need to be careful if you decide you want to do it. I think Checkers is a little more predictable than Tess.

I hope all is well with you and the biopsy comes back negative. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 7/28 Checkers pmps 307

Hi Barb and Checks,
I'm glad that Checkers managed to get it out and hope that there will not be a repeat performance. Wow, how scary the whole thing must have been. You did very well in dealing with it. Checkers seemed to be good after the episode and he certainly enjoyed his tub drinks and his gravy food.
Thinking of you tomorrow as you do all that driving to and from the doctor's. I hope everything will be OK. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Detective Poo here. I see I need to expand my rounds to include Mr. Checkers. Poor guy and poor you, what a traumatic morning. I'm glad he's feeling better. Paws crossed for your procedure. Be safe, Checks, while your bean is out and about.

Re: 7/28 Checkers pmps 307

Thank you so much for your input, Everybody.
Checkers is fine tonight. I have never worried about constipation with him, even with the bupe, because like Marje's Gus, he often has very loose stools. Tux is the one I have the Miralax for, and Checks has eaten his food, with no problem. I don't know what happened today.
What scared me was that his back legs are so weak, that I can knock him over so easily. I've talked to Dr Dave about it, several times. It's not neuropathy, so the B12? won't help. I don't want to face his aging, so don't talk about it.

Thank you for good wishes for the bean tomorrow. I get the epidural for back/leg pain. Susan is taking me.
I'm hoping that the absence of leg pain, means I can sit here and chat in condos longer *grin*
Biopsy for lip won't be back for a few days.

Marje, I wasn't discouraged by anything you said, honest! I just don't understand his bounces and nadir, well enough to use R, right now.
