Good evening LL,

7/25 condo

WCR Her vet took some scrappings from her mouth and her ear to look under the microscope. This wasn't something that was sent out she just wanted to see what she could see. No mites, but if she were to take a guess she thought that they had the make up of mast cells. :-| Sara had a mast cell tumor taken off last year.

The other thing is that she could be having an accute allergic reaction to something. She did have flea dirt but no fleas. I've never seen her scratch either. She gave her a shot of Benadryl and I am to follow with Benadryl BID for a week. If there is no difference we will do a biopsy. I have been wracking my brain to think what is different. I know I switched from special kitty to friskies a few weeks ago. Which would coinside with her symptoms. The other cats didn't seem to like ss that much anymore so I switched.

Here is a picture of my sweet baby. She looks so miserable. I'd appreciate any imput on what you think. All her mucus membrane are affected. Ears eyes mouth and private. But her ear and rims of her eyes are the worst. Her CBC came back great except that her calcium was up a little. I feel so bad for her. It hasn't been easy to find benadryl in pill form either. My husband has been to two different places [walmart and bigy] but they don't have it. I found some online though. The capsules are 25 mg and I need 12. The pill would be easier to give. I don't want to stress her out if I don't have to.

Sara can use all your thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine that I could loose her this way.

Jan....is it possible to take her to a board cert vet dermatologist? I can imagine she is very uncomfortable. I don't understand if it could be an allergy..why isn't she scratching? Sending mega healing vines.
 
Oh Jan, I hope that if it is an allergy the Benedryl will help. Poor Sara looks like she's suffering. We are sending lots of healing vines and prayers for Sara to feel better and for this condition to clear up. Sending stay-strong vines to you, too. Think positively.

Jan, can you pull a capsule apart to give a half dose sprinkled?

Poor baby, I feel bad for her, especially in this heat. Have you thought about putting her back on the other food in case it's a food allergy?

Hi Nina, I have some of the sk left over and have just stopped giving her the friskies. It's a long shot but it's worth a try. Her body is reacting to something. She wouldn't eat it when I put the benadryl in her food. She's to smart for that. I'll have to mix half the powder with a little water and syringe feed her till i get the other. I never thought it would be so hard to find. And we have air conditioners if we get another heat wave which I think we are headed for. So she's cool. She is eating and drinking which is good.

Hi Marjorie, I'll give it a few days and see what the benadryl and food change does first. I'll have to do some checking on that. No idea if there is one around here.

Can you use a pill and empty gelcaps to give her a partial pill as opposed to powder/capsules?

We have a thread going on health that a lot of cats are going off food. They recently changed the Friskies recipe adding in something... magnesium sulphate I believe. ... let me go check. Yep that was it.
 
Hi Jan, so sorry to hear Sara isn't herself. I hope the meds work. Sending some feel better and healing vines and prayers for her. She looks like such a sweet kitty I know you want her feel better. Hugs.

Benedryl tastes vile. I doubt it's something that you should sprinkle over food unless you want to create a food aversion. You can cut the tablets but I'd be surprised if Sara didn't foam from it.
 
Hi Jan -sending mega healing vines for Sara. I hope she feels better soon. I have no advice, I've never dealt with anything like this before. I wish you much luck. Poor Sara... feel better little one!

It is very curious that Sara's problems do coincide with the food change. Even though it's odd that she doesn't seem itchy, to me it's also odd that the irritations are focused on her mucus membranes - that sounds more like some sort of reaction more than anything else to me. It's also a bit strange that she had flea dirt on her, but no fleas??? When my senior, Mario, was a baby kitten, the vet ran a flea comb over him twice, didn't pick up any fleas, and said he was free and clear. Within a day, we found out that could not have been further from the truth - the poor little guy was absolutely infested! It was awful. So, maybe you should try going of Sara with a comb more closely, too, just to be sure she doesn't have any fleas.

I'm so sorry about Sara's allergies or averse reaction to something. :sad:

If you do get the pills I guess you've probably heard that it's good to coat them with butter to help them slide down the throat. I imagine that will also help seal in the taste for a second or two. Maybe long enough to bypass the taste buds?

If you have trouble finding pills, let me know I get them at the grocery store all the time and can send you a box.
My DH has allergies and he likes the small pills instead of the capsules. I have a new bottle of pills in the cabinet right now.

The other delivery system I use for grandkids is melt-away strips. Although they may have a tiny bit of sugar (they taste sweet.) They are wafer thin strips that melt in a split second in your mouth. They work great for whiny kids who won't swallow pills. Don't know about a kitty. :lol:

I'm so sorry to about beautiful Sara's eye and ear problems. On the Benadryl, you could try putting half a capsule in a pill pocket. They are soft so you can pinch it together and seal the powder in. The duck and pea is hypoallergenic and low carb.

My heart goes out to you guys and I am saying prayers for sweet Sara. I know the feeling far too well, and looking at Sara's pics definitely sends me back to February when Willie's face looked very similar. One thing to consider would be a novel protein diet... I know there are several venison and rabbit options now that allow you to avoid most of the proteins typically found in commercial cat foods. Have you tried looking for the generic of benadryl? I've seen it in the Equate label. If you have better luck finding it, talk with your vet and see if chlorpheniramine maleate would be an appropriate option. It's what our vet told me to use when we suspected allergies for Willie. Not sure what it is the generic of, but we got the CVS brand and it was inexpensive.

Oh!!! Your poor sweet baby Sara!! I feel so bad for you both. I'm sending a boatload of healing vines. I hope the change in food will do the trick and this clears up quickly!!
 
Hi Jan,
Just a thought, but Benadryl comes in a chewable childrens' version. We were told in our wilderness first-aid class that it gets into the system much faster than the pills and that therefore we should always carry it (for adults as well as children) in case of emergencies. Since it is meant for children, it might not have the bad taste.

I hope Sara is feeling a bit better today.
