Hey everyone I wanted to give you all a detailed update about the vet appointment yesterday.

So before taking him to the vet I compiled this list of questions from the suggestions I was given on questions to ask the vet. So here are some of the questions I asked, and the answers. (They are out of order now though)

Q: How long will this wound take to heal? How long will it need to stay covered? When will stitches be removed?
A: She is not sure how exactly long it will take to heal. She said it will also depend on Jupiter, like if he keeps pulling his bandages off and licking it. She said him licking the area will make it take longer to heal. She said she would like to remove the stitches next week between Tuesday and Thursday.
A: She said the bandage is no longer for healing purposes but to keep him from making it worse, by licking it or pulling out stitches or from litter getting into it.

Q: Are the margins of the tumor clean? When the lump was removed was enough surrounding tissue taken out that there was none of the sarcoma left in him. What size cm was the mass that was removed?
A: Okay she said that the biopsy report indicates that the margins are clean, but very small margins. She said that the person who did the biopsy report recommended a wider excision. She said because of where the tumor was, she cant do a wider excision. She said she would have to amputate his leg in order to do so, which she doesn’t think is a good option with him being such a big cat. (Please also read the biopsy report below for more details)

Q: The oncologist that Jupiter is being referred to, if you had a pet with the same condition, would you go to this oncologist you are recommending? Or is there another in the area you would choose?
Q: Is there a board certified veterinary oncologist in the area
A: The vet said that yes, this is where she would take her own pet. And yes, there is a board certified oncologist there. This is the link to the site of the place she is referring him to: http://pvs-ec.com/

Q: Is this the skin form of hemangiosarcoma? Does it have the potential to ever be completely cured?
A: This is the skin form of it. She said its possible that even if it hasn’t spread, that years from now it could come back. She said to check with the oncologist about this.

Q: Is hemangiosarcoma hereditary? Should I get Jupiters sister tested? Could this be detected in bloodwork?
Q: What are the treatment options?
Q: Will chemotherapy be recommended or are there any other treatment options?
Q: What is the survival rate if the cancer has not spread yet? What is the survival rate if the cancer has spread (metastized) already?
Q: What other health effects should we expect to see? Is the hemangiosarcoma going to cause him any symptoms right now? In the future?
Q: Is there anything we should be watching out for?
A: She is not sure about this. She is not familiar with hemangiosarcoma. She does not think it can be detected in the bloodwork. She said that these are all questions that should be answered by the oncologist.

Q: Could you email or make a copy of the test results for me? (including bloodwork, biopsy, xray, etc) I would like to have these all in my possession and I am also going to get his previous medical records from old vet. I will also be taking all of these records and results to the oncologist.
A: She is going to fax the oncologist all of his records that she has and I got a copy of the xray on a cd. She also printed out a copy of the biopsy results and gave that to me.

Q: What are the next steps?
A: She said the next step is to take Jupiter to the oncologist to be tested to see if the cancer has spread. She said they can do tests that she cant. She said they will do an ultrasound to make sure it has not spread to the heart and other areas.
Q: I asked her if it was possible that the cancer has not spread at all
A: She said very possible. (Please read the comments section from the Biopsy results below)

Biopsy Results:

“CLINICAL HISTORY: 1.2cm raised round mildly ulcerated soft growth on plantar surface of right tarsus; present for about 3 months, recent enlargement and discomfort; cytology = blood”

“DIAGNOSIS: Epithelioid hemangiosarcoma with chronic ulcerative hemorrhagic inflammation. “

“PROGNOSIS: Fair to guarded”

“COMMENTS: This lesion is completely excised with 1-2mm margins. Cutaneous hemangiosarcomas in cats are generally reported to have a low incidence of recurrence and metastasis after complete resection. However, the tumor in this patient is cytologically of high-grade malignancy, which may suggest a less favorable prognosis. Clinical staging and wider excision are recommended.”

Re: 7/27 Jupiter--Tumor-hemangiosarcoma Detailed UPDATE

And to add more stress right now.....

Jupiters paw is HUGE and swollen. The vet wrapped it yesterday - she did a big wrap the whole way up his leg since he keeps pulling it off. I guess it was on too tight? I checked his toes yesterday and they were fine but today they are so swollen.

Called the vet - she said no vets there right now but take the bandage off for now and she told me if I wanted I could call the oncall vet

Called them and only got to talk to a vet tech who said keep the bandage off until swelling goes down or I could bring him in to be checked but will be charged an emergency fee and she said she doesnt think he needs to be checked unless the swelling doesnt go down... I asked how long it should take for the swelling to go down and she said if its not better tomorrow, to call them.

I told her that his vet wanted me to keep it covered. I told her I can keep a very close eye on him during the day to make sure he doesnt lick it or try pulling the stitches out. And the vet was concerned with getting litter in it. She said to try putting an infants sock on his foot so he doesnt get litter in it. Problem is it will be impossible for me to stay up with him all night long to make sure he doesnt bite and lick at it. And he can get the cone off.... so when he pulls the sock off... he could lick it, bite it, pull the stitches out, or get litter into it.

So I am just not sure what to do....

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Jamie, my thoughts and prayers are with you and Jupiter as you work through this. I am so impressed with all that you are doing for Jupiter. Sending healing vines and comfort vines and no licking wound vines to Jupe and lots of strength and comfort vines to you. Give that boy some scritches from me and Shasta.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter--Tumor-hemangiosarcoma Detailed UPDATE

Well, you did get some answers which is good. Overall, it's optimistic rather than pessimistic.

And it is good new that there is a certified oncologist there. Now if Jupe will just quit messing with it...

"Fair to guarded" sounds a lot better than "poor".

How's his appy? And is he on any meds at the moment?

Is there a firm date for the appt with the oncologist?

How are you and Dane doing, Jamie?

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Poor Jupe....and poor Julie too! You two sure are having a rough time!

I'd probably leave the wrap off today and watch the foot...by nighttime, the swelling should be reduced (if it's only due to tight bandaging), so I'd re-wrap it for the night as you'd been doing before. Hopefully he'll leave it alone enough to not pull it off later.

Good luck to you, and you have my continued prayers for all of you

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Carl I am going to be lazy about this since it takes me forever to type something up

Copy/Pasted from last night:
"I am so sorry I havent posted an update yet about todays appointment.

I just cant seem to get rid of this awful cold or whatever it is. Everytime I feel better, it just comes back again! I am all congested, sore throat, cough, headache, & fever. I am so tired too. My kidney pain has been very severe recently and I am taking more pain meds then normal so at times I have a really hard time making any sense at all. (This post alone took me a very long time to type because I kept going over and over it to make sure it all made sense and that I said everything correctly)

I will post in a new condo tomorrow a more detailed update about todays appointment.

Jupiters appy is not very good today. I thought it might be the warm weather, and his appy usually gets a little better at night when it cools off, but tonight - his appy is still very poor. I have tried several flavors of food, meow mix wet food cups, fancy feast appetizers. He will take a few licks but thats about it. Gonna have to try some friskies shreds in a bit. Just hoping he will eat something, anything at all. My poor sweet baby boy, I am sure he just isnt feeling great right now -- I wish he could understand that not eating will probably only make him feel worse. I am going to try to stay up a bit and offer him his favorite foods every hour. Even if he just takes a few licks at a time as long as I offer food frequently, atleast he will be getting a little bit in him."

His appy is still not great today... but he did just eat a decent little bit of LC pate. He is not on any meds other then his prozac for anxiety. And I am not feeling great, but still doing my best to take care of my sweet baby Jupe. And now I am soooooo super worried about his paw.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Hi Jamie,
Sorry to hear you are having problem with keeping his bandage on.
I missed some of your previous posts, so I'm not sure if you've already tried, but how about this.
Cover his paw with a sock or new bandage, and put the tape that STICKS to his fur at the end really really really well, so it won't slide.
Not too tight so his blood can circulate, but make it really stick to his fur.
When you need to take it off, if you apply some alcohol, the kind you can buy cheap at the pharmacy, these tapes come off really easily.
As long as you are very careful the alcohol doesn't reach his wound, it won't sting, but it will sting a lot if the alcohol gets to his wound so please be careful.
This is how they remove these sticky tapes holding the IV catheter at my vet all the time.
And if he put his cone on overnight to prevent him from chewing, you can at least prevent litter from sticking his paw while you are asleep.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Hi Jamie,
Good list of questions and we are praying for good answers from the oncologist.

If the swelling is caused by the bandage being too tight, it should go down when the bandage is removed, or loosened. Try gently applying a flexible ice wrap after you loosen the bandage (5 minutes on; 15 minutes off. repeat several times over a few hours) (you can buy the ice wraps in a pharmacy; they are re-usable and can stay in the freezer between uses.) Is his leg/paw hot to the touch? If the leg is hot, it could be a sign of infection. I would not fool around with an infection. Go to the ER in that case. Bummer that this is happening on a weekend. Perhaps you can find another vet who is open on weekends?

Sending vines and praying that all will be OK. The baby sock is a good idea. Perhaps you should forget about litter and use puppy pee pads in Jupe's litterbox.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

We do put the sticky tape at the end of each side of the bandage. They dont want me to put anything more then a sock on it right now until the swelling goes down though.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Okay the vet also asked if he was hot. I said no because the paw was not hot... it actually felt cooler then his other paws... but his LEG itself... is very hot.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Will he let you touch it at all? If so, do you think he'd tolerate a picture? If you think that might help I would be happy to post it.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Jamie, please call the vet back and tell her that the leg is very hot, even though the paw is cool. She needs to know this.

I don't want to scare you, but last summer my DH had an insect bite that became infected. It was on his hand. The next day the swelling was moving up his arm. It was a weekend, so we went to a pharmacy to consult the pharmacist about what he could take to relieve the swelling. The pharmacist took one look and sent us to the ER. An infection moving up an extremity (like an arm or a leg) can apparently reach the heart.

Ella

p.s. I am very sorry that you are so sick while all this is going on. Thinking of you and sending you healing vines.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

If his leg is hot, then it sounds infected. The wound is partly "open" right? Is it oozing at all? Does it smell odd?

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

leaving now to go to on call vet 40 mins away and he has to be there in 45 min

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Drive safe, Jamie.
Hugs,
Carl

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Awww Jamie - I'm sorry things are so rough right now. Nothing is worse than feeling helpless and not knowing what to do for him. Poor little Jupe. Hang in there! We're praying for him quick healing and that the tumor didn't spread. Also praying for you to feel better and to have some peace!

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Ok we are in the car on the way to vet dane is driving and I'm holding jupe. Its a lot less swollen now and doesn't feel very hot anymore either. Should we keep driving and get him checked still?

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

I vote keep going...if it's OK, you know you don't have to worry...

HUGS! DRIVE SAFE!

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Just like if you go all weekend with a toothache that keeps you awake, and on Monday on the way to the dentist it suddenly doesn't hurt anymore... You still need a filling.
Keep driving!

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

I am praying that the on call vet can make Jupiter's paw better, Jamie.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

She said do not wrap it because it is still very swollen. she said it doesnt look infected yet, but it might get infected without a wrap so she gave antibiotics. She said only put a sock on it.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Did she suggest pain meds? I'm sorry Jamie, this all sucks. Your life has been pure hell for a couple of weeks, and I'm so sad for you. Praying that things get better for all of you soon.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

Maybe the on call vet would recommend some bupe if she knew you had some on hand to give. Can you call her and see, or did you already ask about pain meds?

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Detailed vet update VERY SWOLLEN PAW!!

I didnt ask... but hes not acting in pain really.... he has been out and about and other then yesterday his appy has been good (as in better- decent appy). but maybe yesterday he had a bad appy from his foot hurting from being wrapped too tight

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

Poor Jupiter

Going to try to get him to eat a little more then give him a dose of AB's. Its called "ClindaCure" clindamycin hydrochloride liquid.

Dosage is give 1ml (25mg) twice a day for 10 days

okay gave him the AB. got him to eat a little more too. Man he was not happy when I gave him the AB though. put a little sock on his foot with 2 pieces of tape (not wrapped around his leg - just a piece on each side) and hes wearing his cone... which he can still reach his foot... but not as easily so it gives me an extra minute or two before I have to stop him

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

Sending prayers and healing vines to Jupiter. And lots and lots of get well vines to you Jamie.

Glad to hear the vet does not think Jupiter's wound is infected.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

Oh Jamie,

Just praying that you catch a break!! I don't have any suggestions for keeping Jupe from bothering his boo boo. Is there a different kind of cone might work for him?

Sending healing, positive vines for Jupiter and YOU!!

Jane

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

(((((Jamie)))))
I'm very glad that you took Jupe to the vet this afternoon. It will set your mind at ease to know that he does not have an infection. I have heard that clindamycin is a very powerful antibiotic and kills every bacteria in the digestive tract, even the "good" bacteria. If you can get Jupiter to take FortiFlora or some other pro-biotic, that would really help to keep him from getting constipated. If he will eat plain yogurt with active cultures, that would work too.

I hope that all will go much more smoothly from here on and that you, Jupiter, and Dane will all have a good night's sleep tonight. Feel better, Jamie; feel better, Jupe!

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

So Sorry Jamie, Dane and you must just be so worn out by now, stress is just so harmful to the body and with you already so sick I hope you can find just a few minutes to breathe and take care of yourself. This is really so unfair I know.Big hugs to Jupe from us You are doing the best you can do for him

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

I'm glad Jupiter's paw isn't infected. Sending prayers for you and Jupiter. I hope you start feeling better soon. It's hard to be sick and have to take care of Jupiter.

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

Not sure if this would freak Jupiter out too much, but what about a kitty muzzle? Then he could not bite his foot.
Edit to add: hmmm, just googled them, and it looks like they all cover the whole face including the eyes. Not what I had in mind...
edit again: this one for a small dog is more what I had pictured:

p.s. so thankful you were able to speak to the other person at the vet about her diabetic cat! :o

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

thank you all so much for the visits! i have some pearl probiotics they are very small pills... i can give him one in the morning when i give him his anxiety meds

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-Detailed vet update - swollen paw

Well Jupiter jumped up and let out a bunch of yelps earlier. I think he might have hurt himself landing on that foot since its not wrapped so not really padding there over the stitches now. I checked it and there was a tiny tiny bit of blood but otherwise it looked okay. Put some neosporin on a nonstick gauze pad and put that over it and petted him a whole bunch. he seems to be doing a bit better now.

his paw is still swollen. I am worried about him getting litter into it since I cant wrap it and the sock thing isnt working. even with the cone on he will rub his foot on the floor until it rubs off the tape and the sock. so looks I will be staying up with him as much as I can tonight.

will try to post some pics tomorrow

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-update/paw still swollen/bad appy t

well his appy is pretty poor again today. His appy was decent for a few days there so I am thinking maybe his paw hurt after vet wrapped it and still hurts today from being swollen? i dont know... but maybe thats why his appy is poor. im hoping all the swelling will be gone soon and hopefully his appy will pick back up

he ate some baby food today but this was the last jar. only 2 appetizers left too so im really hoping his appy picks up and he will eat his LC pates we have

my poor baby Jupe. I just want him to feel all better

Re: 7/27 Jupiter---Tumor-update/paw still swollen/bad appy t

Hi Jamie,
I hope you all got some sleep last night and that you and Jupe are feeling better this morning. One solution to the litter problem might be to put puppy pee pads in the litterbox and leave out the litter. You can change the pee pad easily and they are not expensive. I hope Jupe's paw is less swollen and that his appetite will improve.

Sending vines for everything!

Hugs to you and Dane, scritches to Jupiter
