Georgia and Simon (GA)

Member Since 2010
I don't know what is going on with Simon. Ever since I stopped the ear drops, his bg is going higher and higher. I am getting really scared since this is so unlike him. I have noticed that he is not scratching his ear, but is scratching his head in front of his ear. He has a little red irritation spot from scratching it. Do you think he may have some other type of skin infection?

Claudia suggested that I get his urine checked in case he has a UTI from the med he was on. I'm not sure I will be able to get a urine sample from Simon because he always seems to go to the lb when I am not anywhere near. I'm also going to try and catch him urinating so I can check his ketones.

Should I go ahead and make an appointment with the vet for Friday? I have off that day and will have time. Of course, money is a huge issue but I can't have Simon's bg get worse and worse. Other than the bg and scratching his head, he is eating well and purring and playing (except during the day when it is so hot).

Last night, his bg was 141 and the night before it was 86 so I don't think the insulin is bad.

Any advice? Thanks!

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 help please

Honestly sounds like allergies to me Georgia I have a aby here with allergies in general but they often scratch the ear area more and often face around ear area is Simon itching anywhere else?? or just ears?? if its just ears then I would be inclined to say the ears are still bothering him a lot and you are going to need to treat them again with something else so maybe a vet visit is a good idea since his BG is so unlike him

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 help please

Can you make the appointment and cancel at the last minute or before, if he seems to get better? I would grab the appointment while I could. I hope it all the irritation and whatever is causing goes away, (snaps fingers) like that.

Are the ear drops steroids?? That could raise the bgs too--So sorry that You & Simon are going through such hard times with all this..Hope tomorrow is better--I would see how he is tomorrow.Hugs from us!

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 help please

I completely understand the dilemma...when money is tight, you hate to spend it where it's not needed. Nothing more aggravating than taking the kitty to the vet and they can't find anything wrong!!! I don't know if maybe giving Simon an extra drop of insulin just to see what happens is an option for you or not. If he's scratching his face next to his ear, it could be his ear still hurts way down deep. Of course, it could be nothing!!! Since it's only been a couple of days since his numbers have been higher than normal, I like the idea of making the Friday appointment with the option of canceling if things improve by then. This may be the only way your mind will be eased. Lots of help I've been, huh?!!!

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 help please

The vet will probably be able to get a urine sample, especially if they use a needle for a sterile sample.

Glad he's eating and seeming fine otherwise. If he wasn't the higher numbers would be more frightening.

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 help please

Simon is only scratching around his ears so it may be allergies. I guess some cats may not respond as well to certain medications and may need something stronger? The zymox had a steroid in it so I thought that would clear things up. Tomorrow, I will increase his insulin slightly to see if that will help. I will definitely make an appointment for Simon to see the vet on Friday. So frustrating! Before all this happened with his ears, he was almost off all insulin!

What happens to a cat on pred drops? Could it have caused his diabetes to worsen quickly?

THinking of you and Simon and sending hugs.

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 help please

It's possible it's rebound from discontinuing the steroids. I'd just keep an eye on things and don't panic. Let's see where Simon's numbers go over the next few cycles.

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 help please

Hi Georgia - I am sorry... what a stressful situation. I am inclined to agree with sienne, just from a few things I have read. Hopefully in a cycle or two things will go back down. I think I too would keep the vet appt, if his ears are still bothering him.

Good luck with the increase tomorrow. I hope it helps.

(((HUGS))) from all here,.

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 +4 234 help please

Thanks everyone for keeping me somewhat sane! Simon is a little lower this evening. Hoping it is a rebound from the steroid medicine -- we'll see tomorrow how it goes. Thanks again!

Re: 7/27 Georgia's Simon PMPS 315 +4 234 help please

Hi Georgia & Simon,
Thinking of you tonight and hoping that all will settle down over the next few days. Rusty was scratching the area in front of his ears earlier this summer, and he opened up some little scabs in that area. But it is fine now. (The vet had no comment when I brought it up.) I did put a little saline solution on it and that seemed to help. Good luck with the vet on Friday, and try not to worry.

Ella & Rusty
