Yesterday's condo

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and your reassurance yesterday. I am still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that Mandarin is back on Insulin for the third time. :( Hopefully, his vet will e-mail the results from the blood work this morning. If there are no big surprises, we will go ahead with a dental next Monday.

It will definitely take us a while to get back into a manageable t/f/s routine. Mandarin is a shy cat and loves routine... and for as much as he adores the kittens, they are not part of his old Insulin routine. Despite my best efforts to remain calm, I had Ivy screaming for food, Iris climbing all over him, Fern kept licking the test strips (it registers as Low in case you have ever wondered) and Flora kept wanting to snuggle with him and get my attention.

It took about half an hour to test and shoot, but we did it. And he is eating again.

Walter is totally used to the pesky kittens interrupting our morning routine and doesn't even bat an eyelash anymore when someone is climbing over him while I test. He is back on the trampoline today but he had a pretty spectacular run of numbers last night. Very happy to see him back on the surfboard! ...and glad that he picked a night where I wasn't able to sleep anyways.

:bighug: You have so much going on! I hope the blood work is good so you can get the dental done soon. Hopefully after that Mandarin won't need to get used to the shot routine with the kitties around. ;)
Nice surfing last night Walter!:cat:

My heart aches for you to be going through this with Mandarin again. You have a lot on your plate with your gang and I am sure AM and PM feeding times are most hectic. Keeping fingers and paws crossed that this time on the juice will be short lived for Mandarin.

Walter, get off the trampoline and you and Mandarin have a race to OTJ. ;)

Nice numbers last night Walter!
Hopefully Mandarin's bw comes back ok so you can go ahead with the dental.
Sorry you didn't get much sleep last night; must be difficult with all the little furry bodies climbing all over you and each other!

I hope Walter comes back down soon. Sorry things are so chaotic with testing Mandarin. I hope you all get into a routine soon and he won't need insulin very long. Hoping you get good b/w results back. :bighug::bighug:

Good job Walter now keep up those nice surfing skills. You have soo much on your plate Christina and sending many prayers that Mandarin's juice days just temporary. As cute and wonderful as they are definitely need to figure out kitten control :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Rough first day back on the juice. I managed to get another test at +2 pretty easily. It was nap time for the kittens, everyone was quiet and Mandarin was calm and relaxed. Two hours later, he wouldn't even get close to me. I pulled out every trick in the book, but short of chasing him and freaking him out even more, I was unable to touch him. He finally came to his regular testing spot by +8 (much later than I wanted to test) and I was able to get some blood (with much reassurance and moving very slowly). Let's hope that things will get better once we get back into our routine... but this is turning into a full-time job for now.

I also got the results from his blood work: Liver and kidney values look good, so he is officially on the schedule for a dental. I am not surprised at the Glucose level (390) since he was very, very stressed at the vet's, but I am shocked by his high Fructosamine test (528). Two weeks ago, his BG was 49 when I spot-checked him - how could his Fructosamine possibly be that bad??? All the Labs are in his ss.

...and now I better start calling an electrician. My water heater still trips the breaker every few hours and I am really getting sick of taking cold showers... but I decided that having a stranger in the house would probably really set poor Mandarin over the edge for today.

As I understand it you can think of the test as an 'average' of BG levels over the last 2-3 weeks, so I am guessing that 528 may indicate that his BG has been off from before he got into the kibble. (just guessing though)
Here's a link that discusses fructosamine in cats and gives you the ranges used

I hope Mandarin settles into his routine soon.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hm, that's how I read it too. It's just hard to believe that he was at 49 when I tested him exactly two weeks ago, is in the high 100s/low 200s now and can still gt such an awful number for the Fructosamine. If this is supposed to be an average, how could I have missed so many high numbers?

In hindsight, I wish I would have gone with testing him daily - not just to catch this earlier, but it would be so much easier now if we had never changed our daily routine. Tonight went a little better than this morning... despite the kittens' best attempt to make themselves the center of attention.

Perhaps sometime after the 49 is when his dental issues got really bad, and that shoved him out of remission. Paws are crossed that once those issues are resolved, he head back for the Falls.

Walter, I'm suspicious about that yellow surf today. What do you have planned for tonight????

Hang in there Christina. Unfortunately, we can't help you with all your little monkeys complicating t/f/s, but we are with you in spirit!
