Good Morning, Everyone!

Starting out the day with Onyx's usual 400's, but I've got my fingers crossed that she doesn't bounce so much today, after the accidental fur shot on Wednesday. UGH! I'm hopeful the 5/16 syringes will help prevent that from now on; so much easier for me to use.

She hasn't gone to the litter box since I've up, but I'll update the 5P's a little later.

Oh, and I was successful with 2 overnight readings. YAY!!!! From her PMPS on lastnight, she seemed to stay in the 300's--which is a step up from the high 400's all day yesterday.

Hello again.

Well, her +3 was down just a tad...will probably try and get a +7 or 8 in a bit. She's actually been quite lethargic today, and has not met most of the 5Ps yet. I've been trying to let her sleep, but I think I'll have to take a water bowl in to make sure she's drinking enough. I'm still nervous about the Nova Max Keytone .6 yesterday. I was able to do a urine strip lastnight, but it said negative again. It's making me wonder if it might be a bad batch. Since she hasn't been to the litter box all morning/afternoon, I haven't been able to check yet today. But the box is ready--when she is. :smile:

I do have a question though, and forgive me if it's a dumb one. When we're doing the ear test, why does it matter that we hit the capillary instead of the vein?

Oh, one more question: I was watching some testing videos the other day, and one in particular showed that you should be pulling back on the syringe once it's pushed in see if blood comes into the syringe. If it does, they say not to push in the insulin and to start over. The vet and other videos didn't say that. I'm just wondering if I missed something somewhere and should be doing this? And if the insulin does go into a vein, is that bad?

You don't want to hit the vein because it gives you a lot more blood than you need, it can be more painful for the cat, it might remain sore for longer, higher chance of contamination, more likely to develop scar tissue, etc.... That all being said, when you first start out testing, sometimes it's worth it to aim for the vein if you need blood.

And no, you don't need to pull back to see if you get blood (it's called "aspirating").

YAY! Onyx is back in the yellow for the 1st time in 3 days. Looks like we're past the fur-shot bounce, thank goodness!!!!

Hi Deb! Yes, last night went well. Though I must admit, I lucked out. She never went under the bed...lol.

KPassa, thanks for the shooting/testing info. I feel MUCH better!

I've never pulled back on the syringe to see if there's blood. Since when I shoot, I'm standing above Gabby while she's eating, there's no way that I would be able to tell if I was injecting into a blood vessel. Frankly, I think this is more of an issue if you were giving an intramuscular injection vs. a subcutaneous injection. I also think I'd need an extra set of hands to accomplish this.
