Hey everyone. Not sure what's going on. Chigga's been off the juice for a little bit and her numbers recently have gone wonky. I was going to take her to the vet a week ago but don't really like that vet so I found one that comes highly recommended and I'm taking Chigga in this Saturday for a full check up - see if she needs a dental, get some blood work done - the WHOLE NINE.

It's weird, she has no key tones and is very playful but there seems to be a pattern. On really hot days when I'm gone all day (I don't have air conditioner) I'll come home and test her immediately and the number will be soooo high. But as soon as I open the windows up and love on her and feed her they literally shoot back down. I devised a circulating system with my fan so when I was gone she'd get air (this was yesterday) and she did great. Then today while I was at work the landlord came over to fix a few things and shut all my windows and as soon as I get home I test her and boom - 176. Then an hour later she's 132 after all the windows have been opened back up, loved on her and she ate a little.

What the heck is going on here? Also, what else should I have checked at vet on Saturday?

I just ordered feline's pride to switch her diet to even less carb and I'm also ordering an automatic feeder so she can have smaller meals through out the day instead of me just feeding her in the am before work and at night when I get home - though I do try to split up the night meal a little.

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or speculations? Anything with the pattern of her numbers and how they shoot done once I'm home or if I'm home with her or if everything is made more comfy for her - would that affect it? And other than blood tests for everything and to schedule a dental - is there anything else I can be doing. I don't want to start insulin because she does get in the greens and low blues - it's too sporadic with these "as soon as I get home" highs then shooting back down very quickly.

Just any thoughts would be nice. Thank you all for your help.

Hi, Erica!

The warm weather may be a source of stress for Chigga. Stress causes hormones to be released that raise BG levels. That's one explanation. The other explanation is that I don't know that Chigga's numbers were particularly stable when you stopped insulin. I'd suggest you get some additional tests over the weekend so you can better see what's happening, especially when you're around and can better control the environment. I'd also want to see if her numbers are routinely coming back into normal range several hours after you give Chigga a meal.

If you were to ask me, I think Chigga's SS looks like a cat that's hovering on the brink of FD.

I have the same impression as Sienne.. ...I wonder if you stopped insulin prematurely and Chiggs still needs a little support. I think it's a great idea to get some numbers over the weekend under ideal conditions.

Thanks, guys. I think you may be right. I'll probably get a script for lantus this weekend just in case and I'll try to gather lots of numbers this weekend. When she first went OTJ last August her numbers were steady in the greens and then in Feb was when her numbers starting freaking again and so I got the dental at the beginning of March and she had two teeth removed and it seemed her numbers were on the way back down. Maybe you guys are right, she might be on her way back to FD. How would I know how to start dosing her? What would the dosage be?

She's not too high....let's see what kind of numbers you get this weekend...if they are similar to what you've been getting, I wonder if just a little support like .1u bid might do the trick.

Just tested her so this would be +2~68. She ate an hour ago - 1oz of Merrick Cowboy cookout. This is why I'm so confused that it can go this low. I am really frustrated. :?

Erica...it's ok.

This weekend, test her at what would be AMPS and PMPS. See where she is, feed her, test her three hours later. Ok...let's just collect some data. If she's bringing herself down into normal numbers after she eats, that's a great sign her pancreas is working.

Thank you Sienne and Marjorie. I really appreciate your help. This weekend I'll get the numbers and see what's happening for sure. I'll keep you all updated. If anything, I agree, she may just need a little help for a bit which is not a bad thing at all. I'm lucky she's healthy otherwise. You guys are awesome. Thank you!

Erica
