Rose is just getting started on an extended course of ABs. The package insert for Orbax says to avoid supplements with bi / trivalent cations within 2 hours of the once daily dose. My AP Chemistry was 30+ years ago, so I'm a little challenged here, but I think this means no phos binders within 2 hours of AB so her routine just got a bit more complicated. Rose really likes her food, but she also really likes her schedule, so this has put a kink in things as I try to figure out how to avoid food for a 4 hour block of time in the middle of the day :blackeye: I could give her a snack without the binder, but that just seems wrong while her phos is still too high. Whatever the infection is that she has been fighting seems to impact her kidney values, so I want to be extra careful. :bookworm:

I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things. I have spent the last 2 days getting ready for our next road trip. I expect to head out tomorrow for Northern Wisconsin. It is about 5 hours with 4 cats so it should be fun, but if I leave tomorrow I can avoid some of the fun associated with weekend traffic. :cat:

You're right. Al+++ is in aluminum hydroxide, the binder.
 
I am out of my league with the package insert binder. Is it possible that you could create another meal to give her the AB w/o the phos binder? Or just change up the timing?

I have the same challenge with my guys. I give them Slippery Elm Bark and it has to be spaced from other supplements and/or meds. I have created a 6 meal / 24 hour schedule. Would that help you?

Yes - I have a similar schedule - she *Really* likes the six meal concept! I think it is skipping one of those meals that has her mad right now. Since we are traveling tomorrow, meals and snacks will be light. Yet another reason to love the north woods. She gets to feast when she gets there!

Maybe increase calories in the meals that you are giving to her and see if that keeps her satisfied while on the AB ( that is when you are done traveling)

Good idea. I have the freeze dried treats packed away right now so the civvies can't raid them, but I will pack some to see if she likes that instead of a complete meal.

Oh Gosh - I wish they could talk. I have decided that I will talk to her and explain everything so she understands. I don't remember who wrote this advice to another member, but they said you should treat them with the respect of an older adult who would need to know and understand what you are doing to them and what you are doing for them. That worked for me, so know I just explain everything. She doesn't always like it, but it makes me feel better to know I'm taking care of her the way I would want to be cared for.

I believe this is (and has been) a kidney infection. For several months she has had a increased WBC. Her kidney values get worse when the WBC goes up, so I think whatever it is impacts the kidney function, which is why I'm thinking kidney infection. We can "nip" at it with some ABs, but I know we haven't knocked it out. This last round of Orbax made a measurable difference with the WBC, but after 2 weeks it was up again. So... now we are going for a 4 week course of Orbax.

I'm sort of nervous being 5 hours away from her vet, but I have stocked up on everything I can think of. She doesn't like to travel, but I believe she does enjoy being "on vacation". :cat:
