I am on the phone with the vet. Bad news - it is malignant... I wanted to let everyone know this since I know many of you have been following Jupiters condo. I will update this condo soon

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news from vet

((((Jamie))))
Get all the details and options you can possibly get from the vet. And keep the faith.
I'll check back in from work.

Oh Jamie, I know not what you wanted to hear,my heart sunk, I have been on other end of that call before also and hearing bad news, but don't give up hope there are so many more options these days with cancer in kitties. Blessed Be for you all

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news from vet

Oh no! keeping you and Jupiter in our thoughts today. I hope there are some good options for you

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news from vet

What he has is called "Hemangiosarcoma"

He has an appointment scheduled for tomorrow with the vet. She would like to do an xray to make sure it hasnt spread to the lungs.

She wants to refer Jupiter to an oncologist to get ultrasound testing done so they can see if it has spread anywhere else.

I found this on the internet:

What To Know When a Skin Growth Biopsy Comes Back as Hemangiosarcoma

The biopsy report will indicate whether or not the growth was completely excised. If the tissue completely surrounding the growth is normal, this indicates that the growth has been removed completely and that it should not grow back.
If one wants to be absolutely positive that no tumor spread has yet occurred, the following non-invasive (but not inexpensive) testing is necessary.

Chest radiographs - hemangiosarcoma tends to spread to the lungs. Advanced tumor spread can be picked up with this simple test. (Spots of tumor spread must be 3cm in diameter to be large enough to be visible on a radiograph.)
Ultrasound of the belly - specifically the spleen. Even a small splenic hemangiosarcoma should be detectable with ultrasound.
Ultrasound of the heart - even a small heart-based hemangiosarcoma should be detectable with ultrasound.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news from vet

I would really appreciate any help and suggestions on what questions to ask the vet tomorrow.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

I am sorry but I need to vent... did I mention how upset I am with the last vet?!!?!? they looked at this around the time Jupiter was diagnosed and they told me it was nothing to worry about!!!!!!

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

((((((Jamie))))))

So sorry to hear this. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

(((((Jamie)))))

The first question I would ask the vet is if the margins of the tumor are clean. In other words, when she excised the lump, did she take sufficient surrounding tissue that there was none of the sarcoma left. Obviously, find out what the next steps are -- will chemotherapy be recommended or are there other interventions?

I would also try to find out if there are any board certified veterinary oncologists in your area.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

The vet did mention that she did get out the whole tumor.

She said she is not familiar with this and the next steps would be doing an xray and then referring him to a oncologist (she said in pittsburgh, pa) which is about 1hr 45 min from me. She said they will need to do ultrasound to make sure it has not spread anywhere.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

{{{{{Jamie}}}}
We are so sorry about the diagnosis. We had so hoped for better news. As I've read here many times, knowledge is power and now you know and can make a plan. We will now cross paws the cancer is all out.

You are getting most excellent suggestions here to ask your vet and we have nothing to add. I just remember when we got bad news on Zener's US last winter, either IBD or intestinal lymphoma, his LL supporters reminded us the handsome guy was still the same kitty as before the diagnosis and to love on him as always. That little bit of info helped us calm down and carry on.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

Jamie, did they give you a cm size of what they removed. did they freeze around it to insure nothing would spread? I hope all was intact when removed. I'm so sorry, this waiting game is the hardest, I did this with my son way to many times so I understand how you feel. So many questions but don't be afraid to ask everything even if it sounds stupid. Blessed Be hun

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

((((Jamie and Dane)))) So sorry about the news. :YMHUG: Not what we all were hoping for. One question for your vet - if she had a pet with the same condition, would she go to the oncologist she is recommending? It sounds like an odd question, but there are two veterinary oncologists near me, and the one further away (45 minutes) was the one that my vet was going to.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

Hugs to you, Jamie. Stay calm, gather as much information as you can. I would take notes on what you want to ask the vet tomorrow. I'm just wishing you the Best Of Luck with this not spreading and being completely gone.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter .... Bad news - hemangiosarcoma

I am speechless

I am so so very sorry

Sending you, Dane, and Jupe prayers, purrs, hugs, and scritches from me and Poe :YMHUG:

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

((((Jamie)))))

I do not know anything about this at all but you know we will support you and Jupiter emotionally in every way we can. We are sending mega mega mega prayers that she got it all and that no remnants of it will be found.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Jamie,Jupiter and Dane, I am so sorry to hear this. (((((hugs))))) I hope the tests come out clear.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Oh no!! We were all praying for Jupe and hoping you'd never hear that horrible word!

Don't forget, when a lot of us got our diagnoses of diabetes, lots of vets' first impressions were pretty hopeless! We've come so far from those first scary days, so don't ever give up. Write down questions as you think of them and the answers when you get them. Take one step at a time, and you know we'll all be praying for his complete recovery.

Prayers for both you and Jupe are on our lips and in our hearts.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

(((Jamie))) Shasta and I are sending lots of healing vines, comfort vines, hemangiosarcoma-butt kicking vines and lots of love.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Jamie and Dane and Jupiter,

First big hugs from Jupe's FDMB godmother. {{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}

No, a cancer diagnosis is not the result any of us were looking for. When it happens, it is devastating. Doesn't matter if that family member is furry or a bean. We are all hurting now and will support you as much as we can in making decisions.

I would ask for a copy of the results to be emailed to you. That way, you could share them with us if you wanted to.

Ask the vet some of these questions. You may only be able to learn some of these answers from a vet oncologist.

What internet resources she would recommend for you to read up on this particular cancer.
What is the survival rate if the cancer has spread, metastized, already.
What is the survival rate if the cancer has not spread yet?
What other health effects can you expect to see. Waht should you be watching for.
What are my treatment options?
If this were your cat, that you loved with all your heart and beyond, what would you do?

Remember that Jupiter does not know anything is different. Give him all the love and attention that you always do.

Sending prayers for Jupiter and healing vines. Hoping for the very best.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

(((((((Jamie)))))) We are thinking positively and your LL family will be with you through this. I hope that all will be well and that the vet was able to remove all of the malignancy. Do write down all of your questions and the vet's answers. It is easy to forget things when in stressful situations.
Many, many healing vines are heading Jupiter's way this afternoon.

Hugs for you, scritches for Jupe,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

I would refuse to have messages relayed through a vet tech or the office front desk staff. This is too stressful to have you go through all those layers to get answers.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

From the Merck Veterinary Manual Online: Bone Tumors in Small Animals

Pepper had an osteosarcoma, a different bone tumor. We thought we found it early, before metastases, and amputated the limb. It had metastasized to the kidneys and renal failure is what caused her death. She did not tolerate chemotherapy well, having vomiting and diarrhea after every session. Other cats may do better.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

I just want to add our prayers to the pile. I agree with Deb...don't accept relayed messages on this subject! Also, personally, I would prefer to see the oncologist and have them decide which tests to run, rather than having the general practice vet run tests then send you to the oncologist. I just think the oncologist would know the proper steps to take better than your regular vet would. It sounds like she did get clean margins, and that is great news.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

 Cancer sucks.

I agree you should work with the specialist as much as possible. Knowledge is power, and then you can decide what is best for Jupiter.

Many many prayers...

MJ

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

(((Jamie))) adding my hugs to the pile as well. I'd go straight to the oncologist as well and work from there. My prayers are with you.

Jo

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Jamie (& Dane)--sending warm thoughts and lots of prayers for both of you and Jupiter. I am sorry to hear this

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Jamie and Dane, so sorry on this news. You're getting a lot of good feedback here. Saying prayers for Jupiter and you and for guidance for the next steps in helping Jupiter.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Jamie and sweet Jupe

so sorry to read this! so sorry. please try not to let this weight you down completely. There is still plenty of room for good news to be had. There are many options...and good possibilities ....and many of them are complete health and happy days. It is amazing what can be done these days....and it is amazing how an animal can turn it's own self around. I mean, he is a super fighter~~ right? We all know that!! We are all here for support.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Thank you everyone for the visits and support.

I know he needs to see an oncologist but I would like to take him to see the regular vet tomorrow morning. After his appt at 9am, I am going to call the oncologist and set up an appointment. At the very least I would like her (his regular vet) to check the surgery site and make sure there is no infection or anything since Jupiter has been pulling off his bandages. For that reason alone, I am definately going to take him tomorrow morning to see his vet....and I dont know when the oncologist will be able to see him, so I think it would be okay for his regular vet to do the xray for now.

Later today, I am going to try to compile all of the suggestions I received here into a list of questions for the vet. Going to take lots of notes.

As soon as I talk to the oncologist and set up an appointment I will let you all know when the appointment is... I really hope it will be soon.

I feel so heartbroken right now. I will do anything I possibly can to help Jupiter. I love him so much. I just want him to be all better.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

I'm so sorry to hear about Jupiter's dx...Grrrr - Cancer Sucks!

Just a thought. Sometimes it's hard to write everything down that the Vet tells us when discussing diagnosis, treatment and such.

I often suggest folks tape the conversation. Just ask the Vet first. That way you can focus on what he/she is telling you and not being distracted by writing the information down.

Sending lots of hugs your way and scritches for Jupiter.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. ((Hugs)) and prayers for you both!

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

(((((Jamie & Jupe!))))) I just read this about hemangiosarcomas....."The skin form of hemangiosarcoma are the best types to have as they are the most easily removed surgically and thus have the greatest potential for complete cure." I know nothing about this, it was just in an article, but it kind of made me feel a little better. I hope you get more answers soon. Hugs and extra scritches to the Jupe-meister from us!

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

Get copies of everything! his complete medical records, any pictures, xrays, ultrasounds, etc. - they can provide it on disc/cd rom as well as paper copies of that. ask for details of the surgery done in writing - what they did, process, etc - so you can have it in your possession and give copies to the specialist.

if the vet says they will forward for you - tell them thank you, but you still want to have it in your possession - so please do both.

remember you paid for the services, you are entitled to the documentation.

I am sorry for this diagnosis and sending good thoughts for a positive outcome.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter ....Tumor is malignant - hemangiosarcoma

I am trying to put a new bandage on Jupiters foot.

He was growling at me the second I took off the old bandage. So I just put a piece of gauze with a very small piece of vetwrap around it and told him I would give his poor skin a little break from the full wrap with tape on each end (the tape is making his skin hurt and since he pulls off the tape he pulls out fur with it and im sure that doesnt feel good) as long as he didnt chew on it... I wasnt going to put tape on it until I was going to bed and could no longer keep an eye on him.

So after a while... maybe an hour or so... he started chewing on it... So I tried to put a new bandage on him

He started growling and he grabbed my arm with his claws and was biting me and wouldnt let go even though I told him to stop and tried to get his paws off me. I am allergic to cats, take benadryl, but when they scratch me... it swells up and makes me itchy all over and I cant breathe. I cant believe he bit me like that... Really hard!

I am just trying my best to remain calm, but its really hard and I am in tears and just wish Jupiter would understand that I am trying to help him. It is so frustrating and difficult to bandage it when hes kicking his foot all over the place because then I cant wrap it correctly and have to start all over.

I keep telling him "I know it hurts baby boy but you have to let me bandage it so it will get better and not hurt anymore"

I feel so overwhelmed today and with all thats going on, I dont want to yell at Jupiter or get upset with him. Infact I am not upset with him at all, I am just frustrated with trying to put the bandage on.

I just needed to vent

Hi Jamie.

I am so sorry for your news. My beloved cat Mylan was misdiagnosed a few years ago, so I'm empathetic to your frustration. When I first took him in for this open lesion on his cheek, the vet didn't even do any tests...she said, "oh, it's just an absess". A year an half later I found out from another vet it was a Mast Cell tumor.

My heart goes out to you and Jupiter. Hopefully they've found it way earlier and they'll be able to take care of it quickly.

Jamie,
I'm so sorry about the news.
Sending lots of prayers .....

Re: 7/25 Jupiter -Tumor is malignant-very frustrated w/ band

I am so sorry Jamie, this is not the news anyone wants to hear about their beloved kitty. And what a challenge for you both dealing with the bandage situation. It has to be so hard on you when you just want to help him feel better and all he knows is that his leg hurts. ((((Jamie & Jupiter)))

I hope you can get his leg wrapped tonight and tomorrow get some advice from your vet... and an appointment with the oncologist.

Re: 7/25 Jupiter -Tumor is malignant-very frustrated w/ band

damn Jamie. Not what any of us wanted to hear. I am so sorry. cancer sucks.
hang in there. gather info, ask questions and most of all. love on your baby. he does not know anything is really wrong.
hope it has not spread and there is some RX for this.
hugs my friend. wish there was more I could do for you

Re: 7/25 Jupiter -Tumor is malignant-very frustrated w/ band

Oh Jamie,

I am so sorry about the dx and that you are having such trouble keeping Jupe's foot bandaged. Poor little guy just doesn't understand what is going on. I am sending tons of calming vines and feel good vines for Jupiter, and for you too. I hope you get good news tomorrow, and can get an appt with the oncologist quickly.

Hugs,
Kathie
