7/24 Jupiter AMBG/51 problems with bandage on leg

Well Jupiter can still reach his foot even with the cone on...

And he didnt bite it very much today... but its still sliding off... the other times when we took him to the vet to get it wrapped it was because it slid down... not because he was chewing on it.

this morning the wrap had blood leaking because the wrap was sliding down his leg and so stitches were not properly covered. so we changed the bandage. 4 hours later Jupiter had pulled off the entire bandage wrap. So once again I rewrapped it. Just from him walking around today, and shaking his leg, the bandage is already starting to slide down again.

I tried a few different ideas, like putting a sock on it, and a few other other ideas like that. It does help with him chewing on the bandage, but doesnt help with the bandage sliding down the leg which is the biggest problem right now.

Not sure what else to do.

Decent appy today, but not great.
 
I'm glad his appetite is better.

Would wrapping the bandage past the point of the hock work? I'm thinking if you could end the bandage around the smaller part of his leg just past the hock, it might help it to not slip.
 
I tried wrapping it up higher like up past the joint... where his leg bends....

he growled, hissed, and bit me.... thats not like Jupiter... he never hisses or growls .... it still didnt stay up well for the few minutes we had it on because him trying to bend his leg... caused the bandage to slide down some and ripped out some of his fur

also he tried to jump and stumbled so I took it off right away... I really dont want him to hurt himself when trying to jump and making it bleed or become more swollen.

Yes, I would try to wrap up past the long padded part of his foot. The hock would be at the end of the padded part, I believe.
 
I'm sorry you're still having problems keeping the bandage on Jupiter's leg. If the bandage is long enough, do you think he would let you wrap it around his midsection once to help hold it on, sort of like suspenders? That might bother him though. Sending prayers for you and Jupiter.
 
You're probably not wrapping it tight enough if it's slipping that quickly. I know it's hard to gauge when you're working on your own kitty, but they really do wrap them tightly at the vets office.

If you re-wrap it and do it really tightly, check after a little while and make sure his foot doesn't get cold. You don't want it to lose circulation either since it needs it to heal.

Poor Jupe...You two have really been through the mill..I hope it all works out for you both!!
 
I wish I had bandage ideas for you, but I don't...but I do have a ton of prayers. Many years ago, our GA kitty, Mr Kitty, also had surgery in a similar location. Like Jupe, he could reach the stitches around the cone. His was a rigid plastic cone...we actually ended up extending it with cardboard and duct tape. It was probably uncomfortable as all get out, but fortunately he was good natured about it. Do you think you'd be able to do that with Jupiter? I've attached Mr Kitty's picture so you can see what we did....

Hi Jamie. Glad that Jupiter's appy is getting better but so sorry you're having a problem with keeping the bandage on. Maybe if after wrapping it you wrap a bandaid around the top and bottom of the wrap will help. I'd do it so half of the bandaid would actually be on his fur. If I have any other bright ideas I'll post them.

Poor Mr. Kitty Amy!! Did you get HBO on that thing?....LOL

We sure do some crazy things to help our furkids, don't we, but you've got a good idea..if Jupe can still get to his bandage even with the collar, it might help to either make a bigger one or get one that's bigger. At some point it would become impossible for even the most talented of kitties to get around it
 
Think suspenders for the bandage.

Attach ties to top of bandage.
Cross ties over back and secure under front leg on opposite side.
 
one more thought that is sure to keep the wound wrapped - ask the vet to put a cast on it - like you would for a broken arm or leg. if they cast it, then can wrap it first and then put the hard cast material on top - he won't be able to work it free and you can relax at least for few days until it's time to change it.

might be worth discussing with the vet?
 
even when the vet put the wrap on, it fell off in less then 24 hours... if i wrap it around him he will chew it all off... i swear he can chew through anything! the cone we have doesnt fit him well

i have to run to the store to buy more of the wrap :sad:

once again i have to rewrap it... this time he chewed it up really bad
 
Have you tried a nylon slip paw in cut holes some how to go up over his body to hold it. But that bigger cone that Mr Kitty had you could really do it up with all that pretty duct tape they have out there now.I'm sorry your having so many problems with that bandage. I'm glad his is eating is better. :smile:

I'm so glad Jupe made it through his surgery with flying colors (and so did his mama bean) I've also been following your adventures with the sliding bandage. I'd like to offer something which might sound a bit strange, or maybe not -

Years ago, my Arabian Show Horse broke his left fore leg. The break also compromised the ligaments around the bone so a regular cast wasn't appropriate - a soft cast was put on - and my beautiful boy would promptly lay down, roll, and slide it off. When I found the slid down bandage, exposing the wound around the break, I'd re-wrap it, and he'd promptly unwrap it. When I arranged his stall so he could no longer roll, he nibbled the darn thing apart until it slid down to his hoof.

So, this is what I finally did, and I offer it with the hope that Jupiter won't be offended at his very feline situation being compared to a horse. At my local feed store I found a product called (at least at that time) Vet Wrap - it looked like it was made from the same material as Ace Bandages - and it sort of was - with the exception that it was thinner and it stuck to itself. So I wrapped my boy's leg with the soft cast and then, starting below the cast, wrapped the Vet Wrap around his pastern, up his calf (where the break was) and ending just below his knee. It worked. He could chew all he wanted, but the only thing he accomplished was to leave teeth marks in the Vet Wrap. He couldn't shove it down and he couldn't roll it off. It only came off when I needed to check his wound or it was time (after a couple of weeks) to change the soft cast and get new X-Rays.

This was back in the 1990's and I don't know if Vet Wrap is still around, or if it's still called Vet Wrap. It came in all kinds of crazy colors - neon pink, bright sky blue, lavender, electric orange, etc.

In any case I hope you can find something to help keep Jupiter's bandage on so he can heal quickly.

We are using the vet wrap. First a nonstick gauze pad with neosporin, then some of rolled gauze, then the vetwrap, then tape to keep the vet wrap in place so Jupiter cant slide it off as easily.

I think Jupiter biting the vetwrap and hitting stitches made it bleed a lot tonight. I talked to the oncall vet and will call Jupes vet tomorrow again.
