What a crazy night. Thunder and lightning so bright, I got up to close the blinds behind the curtains, so cats and especially the bird, wouldn't get scared by it.
Slept for an hour at a time and got up to test Checks at 4 am, his +9....DUH, I fed everyone and forgot to test Checks.

When I got up later, the Friskies was still there, and they all were claiming starvation. Those darn civvies were holding out for dry.
Gave Checkers Fancy Feast. :YMSIGH:

I had a terrible time getting .25 dose this morning. Wasted 3 syringes, and finally had to eyeball and think I gave a drop or so, more like a fat .25
I normally draw up approx 1u, then squiggle down to 1/2u.....from there squiggle out 3 drops, and it appears to be .25
Today I couldn't get 3 equal drops, and too much would come out. Then it was less than the .25.

Just to see how much it actually was, I squirted it in my hand, and .......nothing!!! It looked like there was juice in the syringe, and nothing came out. Success on fourth syringe, but probably a drop too much.

I guess I won't be going too far from home today.

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184

Good morning, Barb -

Sorry about your syringe troubles this morning. It's so aggravating to read about the differences from one syringe/brand to the next! I can't believe there isn't better regulation of something so important! But, I guess they figure most people are using the pens or taking enough insulin that that little bit doesn't matter - arrgghh! I don't know how accurate the syringe was that we measured the caliper by, but Doug confidently goes with it and shoots Hershey without hesitation. Sometimes I wish I could be more like that, but I'm the one who triple checks what I've drawn before injecting. I've taken 5 minutes or more drawing up a dose. But, maybe I help to balance Doug out and visa versa.

Holding out for dry food? Like a peaceful resistance?? Well, surely you'll feel so bad for the starvin' kitties that you'll feed them whatever they want! Aren't they funny??

I hope y'all have a great day -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184

Nice blue start for Checkers today! I bet the storms were nice but loud. Your poor bird! I haven't thought about how scared they must get.

My syringes have been giving me fits. I was thinking it was my new pen, but it might be the syringes. I get it filled the first time and squirt it out in the sink and nothing comes out. Then I fill it and it fills right up. I am a little worried about it since Mason will be giving the shots while we are gone.

Hope you have a wonderful day!!

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184

 on forgetting to test Checks! These things do happen, hope your day improves from here

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184

  on the syringe issues. what a pain! I hate it when that happens.... My hat goes off to those of you that measure by counting drops. It can be so hard to get the size consistency in those drops. Well you'll know shortly if it was a little more than needed. Surf well for your bean Checkers, it's been a trying morning for her.

Too funny on the civvies holding out for the kibble. cats!

wow on your storms! Sounds like it was a very long night for you. Time for a nap. :-D

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184+2/172

Hi Barb, I too go thru the syringe dance some mornings, too, and end up practicing umpteenth times trying to get the dose right. Nice flat blue so far for Checkers. Thanks for getting out your cat book with helping Maggie. I so appreciate it, and so does Maggie. Hugs

Good looking numbers! We've got storms although the worst of it stayed south of the city.

I hope Checks doesn't give you any big surprises today.

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184+2/172

Hi guys .. sorry to hear about your storms .. hopefully no one out your way lost power .. Bummer on the wasted syringes .. Checkers is looking really good so far this morning .. hopefully whatever you got into him keeps him surfing here .. have a great day!

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184+2/172

Hope you and Checkers have a peaceful day today! sounds like the weather has been 'entertaining'!

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184+2/172

((Barb)) Sorry about the pesky syringe issues! I hear you - this morning was our first 0.1u. I never feel like I've got it exactly right, even when droplet-counting obsessively. Good job hanging in there til the fourth one gave you success!! Hope Checkers rewards you by not catching you off-guard and just being a breezy happy kitty today

Re: 7/24 Checkers amps 184+2/172

Darn, I messed up today. I got a 98 for an 'out the door' test, and gave a bit of gravy on LC food, just in case I was gone longer than expected. Got back in an hour, to a 158. Sheesh! It was only a teas gravy.

The owner of the appliance store I went too, is diabetic himself, and always asks about Checkers. He finds the whole feline diabetes fascinating.
A long time ago, he insisted on giving me a glucagon emergency kit, in case I ever found Checkers passed out from hypo.

I kept thanking him and saying how grateful I was, but I would never shoot my cat with something I didn't understand.
He insisted, if my cat were in an emergency situation, I might be glad to have it before starting off to the vet.
No I wouldn't, but it was so sweet of him to insist I have it.

It's a syringe with water in it. There's a tiny vial with a tablet...glucose I assume. You shoot the water into the vial which is capped now, with the needle on the syringe. It dissolves into sugar water.
Yikes, if I were human and needed that, I'd be too flustered to remember how to do it. Oh, I see, there is an instruction sheet in the package.
I wouldn't know what part of his body to shoot it in, even if I had to.

Lately when I tell Checkers "test time", he runs into his cube. So today, I set the camera on the floor, to get a clip, so I could show off my adorable boy. I forgot to push the 'on' button. Grrrrrrr!

 Oh, Barb - it HAS been a trying day for you, hasn't it? Believe me, I'm laughing WITH you, not AT you. I JUST got to get a shower (at almost 5pm!)...I always skip breakfast and eat lunch. Well, on Tuesdays, Jessica gets off work at 12:45, so we eat together. Today, I called her at 1:30p because I hadn't heard from her and was starting to worry. (She works ~:05 from home.) She said she had forgotten today was her early day off, had taken a lunch, so had to work longer. And, on from there my day continued to be one distraction after another. STILL haven't eaten lunch and starting to feel shaky. Found 1 muffin left from Saturday (We have muffins almost every Sat morning.) so ate it. Not a lot, but more than I had!

I hope your evening goes smoother -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

 What a smartie!

Barb-
Checks has made such notable improvements! I always hear you saying how you messed up this, or messed up that. Obviously in the scheme of things you are not. Look at the difference in that ss! I bet he is feeling pretty good to be such a smarty pants and run to the cube ("she cant get me here!") at testing time. You do such a wonderful job with him and have such a great sense of humor in your postings.

I am sorry to hear about your bird, btw. How is everyone adjusting...incl you?

Seems a lot of people got good storms last night. I am practicing getting up EARLY for my new job (8 months of sleeping in and its taking some work). I woke up and skedaddled out of my bed well before my alarm today, in fear of lightening hitting the tree near my bedroom.

Hope you guys have a great night!

Re: 7/24 Checkers pmps 281

Hi Barb!!!

Checkers is doing well....earning those reductions...wow! Seems like he just came back from the Falls and here he is at .25u.

So, the calipers will help you to consistently draw your .25u dose. You'd need to get a syringe, draw colored water or milk to your .25u dose, measure it with the calipers. The calipers measure in millimeters and it's best to get a digital caliper. DIgital calipers Let's say when you got your sample dose, you measured it with the calipers and it was .5 mm (I'm making that number up as an example). Then, every time you'd draw a dose, you'd line the calipers up the same way as before and eek off insulin until you measured .5 mm with the calipers.

To measure, I put the bottom of the upper caliper arm on the clear line where the syringe would go if you pushed it all the way up. I don't use the zero marked line because they are too inaccurate. Then the top of the bottom caliper arm would go flush with the top (needle side) of the plunger.

I don't know if this photo will help:

What a night and day you've had, Barb! I hope you're resting and relaxing this evening! I hear ya on those civvies holding out. My group is exactly the same way. I feel bad for Trix...I can tell she's just dying to get her paws on those kibbles!
