Jupiter pulled the bandage off his foot this morning. I called the vet and they said to either watch him closely so nothing gets stuck in it or I could take him there to get it redone. Jupiter is hiding and Dane has work soon so I think Im just going to keep a close eye on him.

Update:

I called the vet back and asked them what to do if cat litter or anything gets in it... and they said something like "you just cant let anything get in it - you will have to start using newspaper or yesterdays news litter right now - he cant get anything in it because you cant clean it out"

Well....Because its on his foot I dont think I can prevent him from getting litter or something else stuck in it... so guess Dane is going into work late (although I think hes pretty upset with me about it)... they said I could bring Jupe to get it rewrapped in an hour from now.

So soon we will be on our way back to the vet again today. When I called the vet the first time, Jupiter ran and hid... I think he knows something is up... and then we coaxed him out with grass.... then as soon as I talked to the vet again he ran away and hid...I feel bad that he has to go again... but dont want him to get an infection or something either.

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupiter pulled off the bandage

I think it's time to have a talk with Jupiter. Let him know you understand that the bandage is annoying. However, if he keeps messing with the bandage, you're going to have to keep making trips to the vet or he's going to have to wear a cone.

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupiter pulled off the bandage

Can you put a sock or pantyhose on his leg and tape it above his ankle?

Jupiter, please leave your owie alone!

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupiter pulled off the bandage

Hi guys .. I'm sorry you're dealing with this .. Jupiter doesn't understand the bandage is for the best and it's hard on you guys to keep taking him to the vet .. hopefully it all heals up soon and there will be no more need for a bandage! have a great day guys!

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupiter pulled off the bandage

Awww Jupiter....that's not going to help anybody if you pull your bandage off.....

If Jupiter keeps doing it, a cone may be in order. Not sure if your vet has the soft cones available but they are much more comfy for kitties! We are a big fan over here for our kitties and drooler. And they also make them look like they are wearing a flower costume. Or a tornado siren costume ...depending on who you ask.

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupiter pulled off the bandage

I'd insist that they show you how to re-bandage the foot. It isn't rocket science, if the techs can do it you can too! That is the best way to keep the wound covered! If they object, ask if they really want you calling 3 or 4 times a day???

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupiter pulled off the bandage

Did you see what I posted in yesterday's condo:

Can you get a baby or child size sock and cover his paw/wrap with that? it may help to keep the wrap on and if he does step in pee again, hopefully only the sock gets it..

of course it all depends on whethr he will keep it on

Maybe that will help?

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupiter pulled off the bandage

we are back from the vet. The vet herself checked his stitches today. She said its a little more swollen then yesterday. She said she doesnt think hes biting it off (took the old bandage to show her)... she thinks he shaking and rubbing his leg on the floor to get it to slide off so she doesnt think the cone will help. She wrapped it back up and as she was doing it she explained exactly what she was doing and she told me what supplies I would need to pick up in case he gets the bandage off again because she doesnt think it should stay uncovered at all...since its more swollen today. I am so glad the vet was very nice today and showed us how.

He hadnt stepped in pee since the last bandage but he still pulled it off... vet said its probably because the stitches feel itchy.. just like when a human gets surgery - as its healing it becomes itchy. I will still try to find a sock to put on it though

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

I'm so glad that they showed you how to put the bandage on. They use the self stick tape to keep from sticking to the fur, but maybe that is what Jupiter need to keep the bandage on. It would probably need to be cut out of his fur when being changed though.

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

They do put tape on the end of each side on the wrap around his leg... The picture carl posted the other day of jupes foot... the pink is the self adhesive wrap that only sticks to itself... not to the fur.... and the white part of it is tape that they put on at each end... I looked at the wrap that he pulled off before I took him to the vet today and there was fur stuck to the inside of the white tape.

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

   I asked the vet how he managed to get the wrap off... she looked at the old wrap and looked at Jupiter and said "you little bugger" She made the wrap a little thinner this time in hopes he cant slide it off as easy... but she said because its probably itchy and Jupiter is such a determined cat he may keep taking it off... atleast I can re-wrap it myself this time though

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

He ate decent the past 2 days (as long as he got his most favorite foods - sometimes when he wouldnt eat any pate I would feed him a cup of meow mix wet food or a FF appetizer and he would eat some of that - so all food added up in the day was still a decent amount for him to eat but probably still not as much as he should be eating) but now today he is not really eating... he hasnt eaten much of anything today... starting to worry me... even yesterday when his appy was bad during the day atleast he would eat a FF appetizer - and at night his appy improved

Hes "in" the couch...

The couch is up on cinder blocks so he doesnt have to squeeze himself under there because I didnt want him to hurt his foot after surgery... but they scratched a hole in the lining under the couch and they hide in there sometimes (they did this a long long time ago and like to lay in there when its cold and they also like to hide in there).. I figured Jupiter wouldnt go in there with the couch lifted up.... but... thats where he is at now...

Whenever he comes out again I am going to try to offer him a FF appetizer. He wouldnt eat any pate earlier and did take a few licks of FF appetizer but didnt eat anything but a few licks. Hoping he will eat today. It starts to worry me when he wont even eat his most favorite food.

It was funny this morning because whenever I talked to the vet on the phone and talked to Dane and told him we had to take Jupiter, Jupe ran and hid. He knew what I was talking about. I wish I could just tell him to eat and he would listen!!

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

when you get the sock, try using a pony tail holder rubberband thingy (but don't use a rubberband) on top of the sock to hold it in place and hopefully keep the sock and bandage on.

I have short hair, so I dont know what those things are called, but I see females wearing them... and no not a scrunchy - too easy to pull off.

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

Might rig a figure 8 going from the bandage on the leg, across the back and circling around front leg on opposite side, then coming back to the hind leg..

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

BJM, I am confused. No idea what you are talking about   Sorry.

Hillary I have very long hair, I know what you are talking about... Jupiter can easily chew through those though. I was thinking of using like a medical tape to wrap around the sock to help keep it on. ???

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

Let me try again.

Think of 2 posts or a cleat to moor a boat.
If you wind a rope around them, you can do it as an oval, or you can do it as a figure 8. Its lke a mooring hitch

Now, make one of those posts his hind leg and the other post his front leg on the other side.
The figure 8 of the bandage wrap will go across his back, not underneath his belly.

I always ask the vet to show me how to do everything, after Lucky's throat being
sliced open by that owl I have learned to ask. They don't offer ever they want money.
I hope you can get Jupe settled in, can you make something maybe take a long knee high sock
cut a hole in it and put it over his head put paw inside the toe part, if over body maybe can't get off. mol

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 Jupe back from vet

he seems irritated by the bandage today, a lot worse then normal. She wrapped it pretty tight today, and made it a lot thinner. I am thinking if he bites on it he might be hurting himself... or maybe its too tight. I tried to look at the bandage and feel his toes and he growled at me!!!!!! There is only 1 other time he has EVER growled before. WOW

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 how to tell if bandage too tight?

His toes feel colder on that foot then the other foot.... calling the vet

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 how to tell if bandage too tight?

okay they said if his paw is cold or looks swollen its best to change the bandage. she said it could be cold from circulation being cut off so she wouldnt risk leaving it on. I am just so glad the vet showed us how to rewrap it. Yikes!! No idea how to get this tape off though

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 how to tell if bandage too tight?

I hope you get the bandage changed and Jupiter leaves it alone. Maybe it was too tight and that's why he was bothering it. Sending prayers to you and Jupiter.

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 how to tell if bandage too tight?

this is not going well... holding him waiting for Dane to get home...

Re: 7/23 Jupiter AMBG/70 how to tell if bandage too tight?

Jamie, I really think he needs to wear the cone. That might help keep him from climbing up inside the couch as well.
Good luck getting the bandage rewrapped.

to loosen it - you can use scissors or if you don't want to ( I know scary thought) try cutting it with toe nail clippers or the clippers/scissors you use to cut his toe nails.

and once you have the bandage off - look to see where the stitches are (maybe even mark it on the tape) cause if it does itch, then you might want to try scratching or massaging around the stitches to help alleviate the itch.

good idea! too bad the bandage is already on. am gonna put a sock on it later too. he is sleeping at the moment. he seems so much less agitated with this bandage now. i really think the last one was too tight.

i had this typed and meant to post it hours ago.... just never hit submit

Thanks!

The cone doesnt fit him right... Its either way too big or way too tight. Only 2 sizes it can be adjusted to, and neither fit him
