Mary sends smoochies!

I am going to try switching Mary and her sister Rhoda over to raw food. Mary seemed to like some raw ground turkey I gave her the other day and Venita at DCIN has ordered me some of the Feline Instincts supplements so I can try her on a homemade raw diet.

So I have some ground turkey in the freezer. I know I should avoid ground pork because of the risk of trichinosis. What other meats do your cats like in their homemade raw?

I will also see if Mary will eat raw meaty bones and was thinking of trying z chicken wing as a test as that seemed like a good size. Any other ideas?

Has anyone tried the raw prey model? I see there are websites where you can buy frozen dead baby mice etc anx the cat gets everything they would get from prey in the wild. I think I may be a bit squeamish about baby mice dying so young but has anyone tried that and can give your opinion if it's better

I'm currently feeding Mary FF Classics that are 5-6% carbs and the raw will have less carbs. Mary's control is poor at the moment and I've been gradually increasing Mary's Lantus so I'm hoping this food change will help.

When I was feeding raw, I used chicken. I've seen raw diets with cornish hen, turkey, chicken, duck, and beef. There was a member in Australia who fed raw kangaroo.

I've used goat. Mostly it's chicken, though. I've done turkey but the bones are hard to get through the grinder. I've also done guinea fowl and cornish hen - a bit unpleasant to cut apart but grinds fine.

Are you grinding the turkey yourself? In case you aren't - it's not a good idea to use ground meat from a grocery store; surface bacteria get mixed in during grinding and you don't know how long it's been on the shelf and whether it's been properly refrigerated. A good butcher with clean equipment should be okay and that way you know the meat is fresh.

The turkey in my freezer is from the grocery store but I know a good butcher so I can ask them if I can buy it there and have them grind it for me. I do have a grinder but it's a pain to use/clean :-(.

FWIW, I used the grinder attachment for my stand mixer. However, I wasn't grinding the bones. You can supplement the ground meat with calcium if you don't grind bone.

The Feline Instincts supplements provide the bonemeal, organ extracts and vitamins so you just need to add ground meat and some water and it looks really easy. Here's a video from their site showing how easy it is.

When I make Tess's raw I don't grind it at all, especially w/ the Feline Instincts you don't really need to. The chunks of meat are really good for their teeth. You can often get value packs of boneless skinless chicken thighs. I sear them in a very hot oven (500º) for about 5 minutes to kill any surface bacteria, then lightly freeze on a sheet pan. That makes it really easy to cube it into about 1/2" pieces and mix w/ the powder and water.

I still have a tab on Tess's SS for Feline instincts nutritional values. It should still be good unless they have drastically change the formula in the last year and a half.

There is a table for the amounts to use of everything for smaller batches.

Neko gets pieces of chicken necks (about 1 inch) and wing tips (last 2 joints) for snacks/parts of her meal. They are supposed to help with cleaning teeth. When you give whole bones, you want to give the non weight bearing bones as they are softer. My civie Theo didn't get how to eat whole meat, and I have to cut the neck pieces even smaller into 1/3 inch. He totally doesn't get the idea of wing tips so I've given up giving them to him.

I serve prepackaged raw, and the current rotation is kangaroo, chicken, buffalo and turkey. I've heard that you should not do red meat all the time so I'm alternating with that and poultry or rabbit. I used to serve venison, but just switched out with buffalo because I am trying an experiment with less bone in the meal - she makes up for it in the wing tip/necks. Other meats I have served are rabbit, goat, pheasant, duck, wild boar, beef and lamb. A piece of advice someone once gave me, don't try to feed them the really expensive meats or that's all they'll want!

Ann, thanks for pointing me to the nutritional values tab on your spreadsheet which is really handy. I'm getting a different mix with the liver in it but I'll be able to use your template and I bet it'll come out the same. Making it up with chunks of meat rather than ground meat sounds good.

Wendy and everyone else, thanks for the suggestions. I hope Mary will like the raw food. Because it is lower carb than her Fancy Feast I'm going to mix it in and transition her from FF to raw over the course of a week do hopefully that will help.

Mary sends smoochies to everyone for all the tasty sounding advice!

I do the same as Ann/Tess...I cube the meat instead of grinding it. I don't bother to put it in the oven, though. I wash it under running water to get off any surface bacteria before I freeze it. I also cut it when it's partially frozen as it's SOOO much easier that way. I use half breast and half thighs since Champ doesn't need that much fat in his diet. He loves the Feline Instincts. Good luck!!
