Re: 7/20 - Cleo - AMPS (223)

Hi Kathy

If you could, please, we'd love it if you gave us a short whole cat report for Cleo each day. Just a line or two because FD is not all about the numbers....it's whether she is peeing, pooing, playing, purring, and preening, too.

Thanks, Kathy!

Happy to do so!

So, the good news is Cleo is drinking less (she was draining her water fountain daily prior to taking her into the vet - which is a good 4 cups of water at least, likely more), and as a result peeing less. One of the problems we were having leading up to the diabetes diagnosis was Cleo was drinking so much and flooding the litterbox, predictably, and then choosing less appropriate places too. That has stopped since we started Lantus, so that's great!

We also got her a second litterbox - one downstairs and one upstairs and she's using both, so that seems to be working out.

As for pooping, she's been pretty regular, despite the diet switch. The very first night she had a fairly loose bm, but that was sort of predictable between the switch to wet food and then feeding her all kinds of sugar/ice cream to bring her blood sugar up after the high dose of Lantus. Since then she's been pooping about once a day and they've looked "normal".

Cleo seems to be adjusting to the wet food only pretty quickly. At first she was very dubious about the wet food, she'd sniff it and walk away and then come back around and try a bite and walk away, etc. Now she pretty much just gobbles it down. I'm not sure if she's just hungrier, or if it's sunk in that this is her food now and the crunchy kibble is NOT coming out.

She seems reasonably happy, she purrs when we pet her and we've been paying a lot of attention to her this week, obviously, so she's enjoying that. She doesn't seem to notice the insulin injections but she's still not a fan of the ear pricks. She does love the freeze dried turkey treats that come after though! She has been grooming a little the last few days, which is good because she wasn't after coming back from the vet over the weekend. She's not very playful, but then she never really has been. Perhaps as we get her feeling better and get some weight off her she'll get more playful.

We did have another vet visit today that was productive. We compared the reading on my glucose meter to the vet's in the office (they were only about 10 points off, which isn't bad at all). I also had picked up 3 types of methylcobalamine B-12 (sorry if I mangled the spelling) to show the vet and ask which she thought would be best. We settled on one and started that with Cleo's dinner tonight to combat what might be neuropathy in her front legs (she's been walking on her wrists - I just noticed it about a day and a half ago). Also ran another set of blood tests which showed her potassium has gotten even lower. Before starting insulin her potassium was at 3.4 which was the lowest end of "normal", now she's down to 3.1. The vet said that it's common for potassium levels to go down when starting insulin. We started her on a potassium supplement at dinner tonight too. The low potassium could be contributing to the way she's walking, so hopefully between the potassium and the B-12 we'll get that solved.

Oh, also some disappointing news - Cleo's white blood cell count is still high (indicating infection, of course). She had a shot of Convenia for this last week, but it hasn't seemed to really make much of a difference yet. We will reassess in a week when the Convenia has run its course.

Whew, bet that was more than you asked for!

No...not at all! That's great!!! I'm glad there have been so many improvements.

Interesting on the potassium as Gracie's FD has never affected her potassium. The thing about potassium levels is if it is low in the blood work, the intercellular potassium is likely even lower. It's good you started her on a supplement. Hopefully it will help along with the B-12.

I saw Sienne warned you about Convenia. I'm glad.....Gracie actually went into anaphylactic shock after a shot of Convenia. It is now on all my cats' charts that none of them are to get it. Once it's in, it can't come back out.

We'd love updates so please feel free to let us know each day of her progress.

Thanks, Kathy!

Hi Kathy!

Good to see Cleo holding her own and showing signs of general improvement. I'm glad you've got her taking some extra potassium - low potassium (hypokalemia) can really make the kitties feel under par.

Good WCR (whole cat report)!
