Hello everyone!!

Yesterday's condo: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=122042

I bumped Billie up to a fat 1u today. Hopefully, that will make a difference. So far, she looks good - breaking her bounce without diving too much (paws crossed).

I have a question. I am noticing that the area around Billie's scruff/between her shoulder blades where I shoot is getting thicker. I try to shoot in a different spot every time, but it's always within maybe a 2-3 inch area.

The thickness feels like extra fat underneath her skin throughout that area. It's pretty soft and squishy. She does not mind me massaging it. I can still pull skin up from it, and it is definitely below the skin layer. I am also wondering if it could be scar tissue, but am under the impression that scar tissue is not usually that soft (although that could be my misconception).

Has this happened with any of your cats? Is this something to worry about or get checked out? Any insight would be much appreciated! Thank you!!! I hope you're having a lovely day!

i think if it was scar tissue you would feel it as you poked the needle in. i get allergy shots and can definitely tell by the feeling when the nurse is hitting scar tissue. Not sure what you're feeling in the layer underneath, but as far as i know, the skin (and therefore scar tissue) should all be in the clump you're pulling up to shoot.

Thanks Julie! What does scar tissue feel like? Can it be soft?

I'm still curious to know if anyone else has experienced something like this, but I can call the vet tomorrow and see if she wants to check it out.

it's hard. think of the difference between poking a needle into a peeled banana versus in the peel itself. the peel itself is more like scar tissue. you can get the needle through but you hit resistance.

i have no idea what you might be feeling, but it doesn't sound to me like skin scarring.

Re: 7/20 Billie AMPS 291 +5 159 question about thick scruff

I used to give Blackie her injections in the scruff and noticed the thickening there, too. I have long since been giving them in her left side (I'm right handed, and it's easier for me), and now currently in the flank so that she doesn't feel it as much. Good luck!

Re: 7/20 Billie AMPS 291 +5 159 question about thick scruff

Thanks Angela and Julie!! Angela, what did the thickening on Blackie feel like? Was it also fleshy/fatty feeling, or harder like scar tissue? I may PM you in case you don't see this. Thanks!

I hope you're having a great day!

Re: 7/20 Billie PMPS 175 question about thick scruff

Deanna, what kind of syringes are you using, more specifically, what size? The first syringes my vet gave me were huge, long ones and the first few times, I know I must have hit muscle, poor Tiger jumped and tried to get away! ohmygod_smile I felt horrible when I learned I could get shorter smaller needles... Also, are you feeling this when Billie is lying down or sitting or standing? I know people give injections when their kitties are lying down, I can't do it, not in the scruff and I don't even try to give injections in the flank because they turn into fur shots because Tiger is too skinny to grab there.

Anyway, I hope you get some answers to your question, have a great night!

Hi Ruth! Thanks for the visit! I am using ReliOn 31 gauge needles. I just asked for the smallest size when I first got them. I can feel the fatty "bulge" area when she is standing, sitting or lying down. I'm definitely stumped about what it is. I will probably call the vet to see if it's something she'd want to take a look at.

I hope Tiger is having a good night!

Hi Deanna;

I would call and ask the vet about it. Anything that feels unusual should always be checked on. It may be absolutely nothing, but if it isn't, the sooner it's caught, the better.

Looks like BIllie is having a nice flat blue cycle. Hope she keeps that up so you can get a good night's sleep. Have a good night.
