Thankfully no big drama/low numbers last night. Apparently her liver cant even handle what she did, so this a.m. its back to the same ol same ol. Got first a.m. test/meds in a little earlier (+1.5) because I knew she was having a big drop from her behavior, and just wanted to get it all out of the way so I could go back to bed. First day off in eight. Will get another test in by +4 to see where she takes it. Beyond that she will just start going up...so will take the rest of the cycle off.

Recheck of urine today to see if the a/b's are working. Suppose to be in the 90's, so Ice Packs are prepping in the freezer for the hot car ride. I can have them pill her evening meds a little earlier while we are there, so at least we get the night off from that torture.

I asked about Animal Essentials Plant enzymes and probiotics that I have in the fridge in last nights condo. Wondering if anyone had used it and if it might be worth trying while she is on all the a/b's? I know you all use something else (forgot the name). When I looked up the popular probiotic on the board yesterday, I noticed its main ingredient is enterococcus! I dont know much about probiotics, but I cant imagine giving her something with a bacteria that is causing her these problems is a good solution. I also understand these probiotics are given for diahrea, which often occurs when on a/b's. She does not have that problem, so maybe its not even worth trying to get something else in her??? Opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

have a good friday.

Re: 7/2 Latte AMPS-423

Morning Carolyn and Latte...I think people here use the FortiFlora...
I have never tried the Animal Essentials Plant enzymes myself.
There are bad bacteria and good bacteria....
The good bacteria is needed in the gut to ward off the bad ones. ABs wipe out everything so we need to replenish the GOOD bacteria.
And that's all I know. I'm sure smarter people will be around to tell you the really good info.
But I am here to give you both a couple of HUGS today...your Friday hugs... :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
So happy that you finally have a day off!! I hope you rest and enjoy the day!

Re: 7/2 Latte AMPS-423

hope Latte clears this nasty bounce. Can't help you with the probiotics, I use an enzyme called Dr. Goodpet.

Re: 7/2 Latte AMPS-423

I've used FortiFlora and another probiotic that Cassandra suggested, Renew Ultimate. I found it at the refrigerated supplement section at Whole Foods.

Keep in mind that there are different strains of bacteria, some of which can be helpful and some of which can be lethal. We need e. coli in our gut. On the other hand, it can contaminate food and cause all kinds of problems.

Hi Latte & Carolyn - just checking with you to see how you are doing. We've only used FortiFlora and for a food enhancer. That idea came from one of Dr. Lisa's papers on how to wean a kitty off dry food. As an enhancer I would say it is so, so in our house.

Happy 4th of July to you!

Carolyn -

I've been using probiotics on my self for over 20 yrs and I'm a big believer in them since they've helped me when the medical world kept making things worse for me... I personally would never take antibiotics without probiotics, but since I take probiotics daily anyway...

I realize fortiflora has the same type of bacteria that Latte has in her infection, but that doesn't mean it's the same strain. For example, like was said earlier, we all have e coli in our bodies, but it's not usually one of the 6 or 7 varieties that make people really sick. In the same way, the enterococcus in Fortiflora may be an entirely different strain. I couldn't find enough info on it, but some schools of thought might believe that taking something similar, but not a toxic form, might actually help the body fight off the bad version. I don't know in this case. Ithink most people use the Fortiflora as more of a flavor enhancer, it's not a very strong probiotic.

I've been using the Renew Ultimate that Sienne recommended to me for the kitties. I don't know if I'll buy it again - it's kind of pricey and I found something similar, slightly less strong for less (and Kasha isn't currently on antibiotics). I'll try to get you that info if you want.

I consider probiotics a must - especially for older animals.

Otherwise, here's how I look at it. Antibiotics are bad for you. They kill the bad bacteria, but they kill the good ones too. The good bacteria are a main line of defense for your immune system - they keep the bad ones in check, as well as improve absorption of nutrients, etc (depending on the variety). If you are always on antibiotics, your immune system is being shot to pieces. They do not make you less vulnerable to future infections, but more vulnerable (research kids and ear infections if you want an example - the more antibiotics they get, the more ear infections they continue to have). Since Latte is in a position where she NEEDS the antibiotics to kill this bad bacteria, she also needs to replenish her good bacteria. That's why we give the probiotics. Even if she isn't showing symptoms of diarrhea, etc., that doesn't mean she can't benefit from probiotics.

I could go on and on, but I'll get off my soapbox now... probiotics are good.

Re: 7/2 Latte AMPS-423

Hi Carolyn, I'm glad to see that Latte ate better yesterday after you left. And Hooray! You have the day off! I hope you get to do something fun with your days off. Bike ride? I have never tried the Animal Essentials. We use Proviable-DC which was recommended to me from someone on the FD-CRF group. IMHO I don't thnk it could hurt to try the Animal Essentials and it might make Latte's tummy feel better.

I hope you have a great day!

Hi Carolyn, Have you thought of trying plain yogurt that contains all the cultures? Lots of people make sure to eat yogurt when on antibiotics. I used it once on Alice (GA) and it helped her. Just a thought. You can buy it anywhere!

Hope you'll be able to get out on your bike this weekend. Many hugs to Latte and you.

Ella & Stu

J.D., Ginger, and I highly recommend FortiFlora.
My cats LOVE it. They come running when they hear the little packet being ripped open. Ginger will stand up on her hind legs and cry out for the treat.
When my cats refuse their food for whatever reason, just a little FortiFlora sprinkled on top and all food is gets eaten immediately. When I try to sprinkle it on Ginger's food she is so anxious to get it that 99% of the time she head butts the hand with the FortiFlora packet in it and some always ends up on the floor around her bowl  .
It smells good (to me :-D ) too.
