Insulin is Levemir, shooting scruff. Giving fluids for kidney failure issues.

QUESTION: How long of a timeframe should be between giving Levemir and giving fluids to allow good insulin absorption and not potentially dilute the dose? Is it even an issue?

THANKS in advance!!!

Placing the fluids and the insulin in different locations means the timing isn't a concern. Maybe do the shot on one side and the fluids on the other.
Or, unless there is a reason not to do so, move the shot back near the hips.

I often gave fluids, tested, shot and fed... one right after the other. I didn't worry about fluids pulling Alex's numbers down because her Lev onset wasn't usually until around +4. She'd receive fluids on one side. Insulin on the other. Never had any problems with absorption/dilution.

Maybe put the shot towards the upper part of the scruff and the fluids back aways. The fluids will shift downward as they pool under the skin. Burrito wrap as necessary for safety and control of shot and fluid administration.

He does fine with fluids since I found what's now his 'fluid box' - a long narrow lidless box with high sides that long stem flowers were in long ago. He sees it out, climbs in and lays down on his own. I give him a little catnip pillow - he says there rubbing and licking it until we're done. I only have issues with alternate site shots when he's not feeling well and is being a cranky old man. He lets me know when I start rolling skin for the shot - I just shoot scruff on those days.

THANKS for the replies!!

Trix was on Lantus and not Lev, so I don't know if that makes much of a difference or not, but for her (remembering ECID!), her numbers would drop drastically and dramatically if I shot and did fluids to close together on her body, no matter how much time I put in between the shot and fluids. The only thing that solved her tanking numbers issue was doing the fluids by her shoulder, and her shot in her flank. She wasn't thrilled with the flank shot, but she eventually got used to it.

Like Trixie, Sammy is also on Lantus and I always give fluids in the scruff and have been alternating giving insulin in the side belly or flank. It seems that almost every day Sammy drops drastically no matter where I give fluids or insulin. I always have to be ready for a big drop. There are times when he doesn't drop to crazy, but if he starts over 100 it is not uncommon for him cut the number in half by +2-+4. I do both fluids and insulin back to back with testing and his first mini meal of the night. But as @Amy&TrixieCat mentioned ECID so you will have to discover how Dakota reacts.

I haven't had to give Gracie fluids since the early days of her diabetes and I don't recall that it dropped her BG but she was so high and we were so new. However, I'm about to give it a go and I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm sorry Dakota has CKD and you're having to do this. Big hugs!!!

Thinking of you, Lyresa, and sending lots of vines for Doc to continue to do well on fluids. He is such a fine kitty. Hope that all the rest of the fuzzy feetz are Ok and your DH, too. Continuing to send vines to your Dad (and strength to your mom).

Happy 4th!

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty
