Hello all!

It's been a little while since I've posted. My husband I were on vacation and my sister watched Tigger. I recently upped him to 9u when we got home and have been having some trouble.
He is resisting shots now that we have gotten to this high of a dose. I knew this was always a possibility with lantus and mentioned this to the vet before switching but he dismissed it. He pulls away, tries to run, ect. I am worried at times that the whole amount is not getting in. I smell his fur after the injection and I am pretty sure it does but he is not making it easy on me and I have NEVER had a problem since we began our journey. Therefore, I am currently stuck at this dose and I do not want to continue increasing.

We have been on lantus now for about 7 weeks (Started 6/11). I am seeing nothing really promising and now that I am having trouble with shots, I emailed my vet again.

He has FINALLY agreed to switch Tigger to Levemir. For anyone that knows our story, it has been such a battle trying to get a vet to prescribe this to me. I have sent research articles, called multiple vets, tried everything. I wanted this from the beginning but took Lantus as my only option to get off of Prozinc. And at this point, I feel like I was having better numbers with the Prozinc.

My question is, he also said we could try weekly injections of Bydureon (Trulicity is the brand name). Has anyone ever heard of a cat being on this? I searched and searched and couldn't find anything on it for use in cats. He said it has shown to help level numbers out over the week. However, it is very expensive apparently. He said we can try adding that to the lantus, but I really just want to switch Tigger to levemir.

His office is overwhelmed and it is currently so hard to get a physical appointment, so testing for acro/IAA is still on the back burner. If Tigger does test positive for acro, I want to look into cabergoline and suggest that to the vet, but that will be later on down the road.

I am concerned about getting the Levemir from Mark's pharmacy now that it has been so hot out. I am not sure what to do about that. I have enough lantus to get me into about the end of August/Early September but I am not sure the weather would cool down much until then. Any suggestions? Has anyone every ordered from them in the summer? I guess I can always suck it up and buy a vial from a local pharmacy until I am able to get it when the weather is cooler. This is probably my best option?

Thank you everyone!
I hope you are staying safe and healthy!

I just placed my first order with Marks and I’m in Texas. I opted for the extra insulation and cold packs, hoping that will be enough to make it through the heat.

Also, unless I’m mis-reading your post, you might want to change the drop down in your title. The GA signifies that your kitty has passed away. I do hope that is not the case! If so, I’m terribly sorry.

Ahh! No! Sorry! I'm not sure how I managed to click that. Thanks for letting me know!

Will you keep me updated and let me know how your insulin arrives? Because I think I'm going to attempt to order it from them! it's so much cheaper! My order that came in June was fine, but it wasn't nearly as hot.

I will. I just ordered for the first time Saturday - it hasn’t shipped yet.

I am so happy your vet finally agreed to the Levemir! As someone who lives 25 minutes drive from Marks - I can tell you it just started getting warmer here this week. Any problems would be in transition from here to there. I think the extra insulation and cool packs would be a wise investment.

Getting Lev and getting to a better dose (time for 9.5 units), will help his numbers be flatter. As for Bydureon - it works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas. If your cat has acromegaly, he may very well have a working pancreas so insulin production isn't the problem, it's the excess growth hormone. Bydureon may help cats with regular type II diabetes. A quick search didn't find any research articles on it, though I did see reference to some research being done on cats. Royal Veterinary Clinic being one.

Me too! It feels like such a relief! I will definitely get the extra ice packs and insulation! Last time it took a week to get to me and it was almost 100F here in Pennsylvania today!

Also, sorry for not linking the last post. I spent so much time in the Prozinc forum, old habits are hard to break.

I shot my lowest number with lantus tonight, 179. I'm sure he will bounce anyway, but it always makes me excited.

I am going to pass on the bydureon and just switch to levemir. I am almost postive Tigger has acro, so I don't want to even bother. Thanks for the clarification!

Nice PMPS. If Tigger bounce, or doesn't give you anything green tonight, you can still try 9.5 units tomorrow. The thing about insulin resistance due to acromegaly or insulin auto antibodies, keeping them lingering in higher numbers will quickly lead to glucose toxicity, which is yet another type of insulin resistance. I'm glad you say are following, it will allow you to keep on top of the BG numbers.
