Thank you everyone for your generosity and support. Thank you for your prayers, vines, and thoughts for Jupiter. I am so happy the surgery is done, and now just waiting for the results of the biopsy. Trying to stay positive.

Jupiter is hiding all the time since the surgery. He went into the shallow litter box we got for him and just scratched around and tried to squat down to go but you could tell he felt a little awkard. He acted upset and went back the hallway to where the other litter boxes are and went in one of those boxes - he still acted upset and awkard though. He hasnt really eaten much of anything today. Its really hot though so all of the kitties appys are really poor today but the civies ate some... Jupe didnt eat any. Im really hoping he eats a little. I can tell he doesnt like his foot being wrapped but I cant tell wether or not hes in pain. I sure hope hes not in pain - hes not acting like it but we will see how he is doing a little later. Im hoping as it gets later and cools off some that his appy will increase.

And... for any of those who didnt see, there is a pic of Jupiter from after surgery in yesterdays condo. My baby boy is a little cutie :-D

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

Well Jupiter got this cute little toy from Deb&Wink. Its a refillable catnip toy. like a little white fish and came with a tube of catnip. Jupiter finally stopped hiding and came out and I gave him this toy and he absolutely loves it!!!!! He is acting so happy and playful! Just made my day!!!!!! :-D

I am going to try to get a picture of him playing with this toy. I took a few pics but they are completely blurry from him moving during the picture.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

sounds like a good first day after his surgery ordeal..... catnip toys help remind him to be a cat....

Now let's just get an appy back, Jupiter....

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

Playing should help stimulate his appetitite some.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

Hi Jamie, I've been out of the loop, but just wanted to pop in and say I'm thinking of you and Jupiter! Hope everything is okay and he recovers quickly.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

It sounds like he's doing really good for the first day after surgery. I hope he'll eat some for you later.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

Out and playing is good! :-D :-D :-D I'm sure he will get used to the bandage, it will just take a little while. And just when he does it will be time to take it off!

Come on, Jupe time to take an interest in the fuds!

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

I'm so happy to hear Jupe's surgery went well and he's home with his momma!!

Do you know what they used for anesthetic? If they used gas, he could still have a bit of a tummy ache...gas anesthetics can cause some nausea, so he might not feel much like eating.

Hey Jupe...eat a little...you're worrying your momma!!

Will continue to pray that the biopsy comes back negative, and hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

I'm so glad Jupiter is feeling good today. I loved the pic of him yesterday right after surgery. Would love to see another.
Healing vines for his ongoing recovery.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

Oh, the fishy toy with the catnip! The refillable ones are great. I bought lots of those, some were fish, some were plush mice. My cats wouldn't touch the fishy ones. ohmygod_smile I sent a happy surgery surprise care package to Jamie and Jupiter with lots of different goodies in it.

My cicie Delta can't get enough of the plush mice ones. She keeps plucking the "fur" out of them so I have to go buy new ones every once in a while. She carries them everywhere. I usually have to go find one or two to take upstairs with us at bedtime, to keep her happy. They are the Mousefull refillable catnip toys made by Petlinks systems and they are great. Even my two senior boys will play with them.

Come on Jupe, eat some fuds and stop worrying your mommabean.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

Awwww...how sweet that he loves his new toy! I hope he has eaten some and is feeling better by now...

You are just so nice :YMHUG: Deb. Thank you for being you, and for being so thoughtful, and for all you do here.
I was thinking I would like to send Jamie some ice cream as a surgery over surprise treat, but couldn't think of how.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

Come on Jupiter, eat your food, please :)

We are getting really loud thunder here in New Jersey, hoping it will cool off for both of us and you guys by tomorrow.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

Hi Jamie,

So glad to hear that Jupiter is playing :-D :-D Hope he is feeling better today, and eating for you.

Any signs of your heatwave breaking?

Jane

Re: 7/19 Jupiter AMBG/55

I dont know about the heat or not... I hate to check the weather cause all I see it hot hot hot

He still isnt eating much of anything... I got him to take a few licks of an appetizer and a few licks of a meow mix cup of wetfood... but other then that... he wouldnt touch any pate food.. wouldnt even lick gravy out of the shreds!!! even the appetizer he only ate maybe a tsp a few hours ago... and just ate maybe 1/2 teaspoon of the meow mix food.. if that... literally only a few small licks.... its starting to cool off a little outside so im hoping all the furbabies appys will start to increase soon... none of them have eaten much

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47

I am starting to worry about him not eating. If he doesnt eat a decent bit tonight now that the temp cooled down a lil bit... should I call the vet in the am???

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

actually... I forgot to give him his anxiety meds today and he didnt get them yesterday because of the surgery. I feel really bad now. Maybe hes too scared to come out and eat

Will give anxiety meds in the morning and hopefully he will tomorrow

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

he doesnt like lunchmeat... i am enticing him to eat every one of his favorite foods. I put a little plate of food under the couch with him in case he is too scared to come out to eat. he ate a little but not much. better then nothing. i will keep putting it under the couch atleast til a few hours after he gets anxiety pill tomorrow morning

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Jamie

I'm sorry he's not eating and he's hiding. Have you tried the grass he likes? Maybe it also has to do with anxiety. Can you give him a pill tonight or not?

Sending him eating vines. That was very, very sweet of Deb! She's been so good to you :-D

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Did you give him any of his pain meds? If he's uncomfortable, he may not have an appetite.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

The pain meds sound like a good idea to me. Just a tiny dose.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Poor guy, he must be feeling stressed and also still recovering from surgery. Often after anesthesia, we will feel pretty good, then it wears off and things hurt like heck. Perhaps getting his regular meds back on track and a little bit of pain meds and appy will get happy.

Just popping in to see how Jupe doing,Sure he will will be feeling better soon just a lot of strange things he's dealing with poor baby. Take care

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

I am going to give anxiety meds in the morning because if i give it to him at night then I cant give it to him in the morning and I would like to be able to get it back on schedule. he seems to do better with it in the morning.

Yes we have tried grass... he comes out and runs right back under after he eats the grass. He DID come out a little while ago, ate some food, then about 30 mins later he is now in bed with me and purring and wanting petted.

Yep, Deb is wonderful!!! Thanks Deb :-D

I have not given any pain meds yet.

He does not like babyfood. His favorite food is the FF appetizers and if I cant get him to eat those then he wont eat anything.

I really hate to give him pain meds. He did NOT like the pain meds. He acted really weird. He was very agitated and upset. He was afraid of everything and hid from me and was so afraid he wouldnt even eat.

thank you all for the visits today. He has eaten some tonight, maybe because its a little cooler in the house. It was 88 degrees earlier in the house. the thermostat in the dining room says its 85 degrees now but in the living room its a little cooler feels about 82 degrees. These cats are used to like 70 degree weather. They dont like this heat. I am hoping he will continue to eat more during the night. He is being very picky though even when he is eating... a little too picky... but thats better then him not eating at all.

Hi Jamie,
So glad Jupe came out of surgery good and hope he will start to eat for you soon. Have you checked with the vet on giving the bupe to Jupiter? Mali never "weirded out" on bupe and I think it definitely helped the pain. I think it would help calm Jupe and maybe help the pain so he will eat. Once again, just my two cents.
We continue to keep you and Jupe in our thoughts and prayers.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Everytime I want to talk to the vet, I only get to talk to the ladies who answer the phones. When I went to pick up Jupiter from surgery, I asked if I could please speak to the vet before taking Jupiter home since I had some questions. They said she was busy in an appointment. I asked if I could wait til she was done and speak to her for just a minute in between appointments (I told them I didnt mind waiting a while) or if she could call me when she was free. They asked why I needed to talk to her and I told them how Jupiter is acting on the tramadol and told them I wanted to discuss other pain meds with the vet. The lady went into the back and a few mins later came back out and said something like "the vet doesnt want to prescribe him any other pain meds and there are not many other pain meds she could prescribe. She said it was just a small bump that was removed and he shouldnt be in much pain." It is so hard and so frustrating trying to talk to the vet techs. I asked well what if he is in pain? and they said I could give the tramadol then. So I said I didnt want to give him tramadol because of how he was acting when I gave it to him. They acted as if I was stupid and didnt know what I was talking about ... the vet tech said something like "its normal for him to be a little sleepy or a little excited on the pain meds - that doesnt mean hes acting weird".... I said to her "hes not doing that... I just told you how hes acting" and she just ignored what I said.

The vet did call me after his surgery was done. And I had asked her on the phone if he would be getting any meds today. She said she didnt want to give him any ABs since he is so sensitive to them and she said to use the tramadol if hes in any pain. I forgot to ask about a different pain medicine on the phone - but I feel like even if I would have.. she would have said no. I dont feel like she ever takes my concerns into consideration. Its really frustrating.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

I am thinking he may also be hiding because I skipped his prozac (for anxiety) the day of his surgery and I forgot to give it to him yesterday - so maybe his anxiety is a little bad from that. I did give him Prozac this morning and I am really hoping that helps him to be a little less scared.

He was out from under the couch this AM (this was before I gave the prozac)... He was laying in bed with me when I woke up and was out and about for 3 or more hours. He is laying under the couch now, but I think now its just because he likes laying there - he is looking out from under there.

So I am hoping that he is out and about a little more today now that I gave him a prozac a little bit ago.

He barely ate anything at all during the day yesterday.... but he did eat a little better last night. Couldnt get him to eat pate today - not even any of his favorite flavors.... gave him a can of HC and he licked some gravy out of that

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Jamie,
I'm so sorry you're having such difficulties with your vet  I hope Jupiter starts to feel better and lets hope he's not in a lot of pain.
Sending NO PAIN and appy Vines to Jupe :YMHUG:

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Hi Jamie,

Hopes the Prozac kicks in and makes Jupe less anxious ~ I can't stand when the office staff makes it so hard to talk to the vet!!

Sending healing/appy vines to get Jupe through this with no more vetty visits and no more pain!

Wishing for a "back to normal" life for you, Dane and Jupe!

Jane

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

remember, sienne posted in one of your condos about some kind of reaction between prozac and tramadol

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

This has been tugging at my memory for a couple of days...

Jamie,
The way that Jupe is acting reminds me of how he acted a week or two ago. And we couldn't figure out if he wasn't eating due to pain, or the ABs or exactly what was going on.

I do remember Sienne pointing out what Dian just mentioned. And your vet said the two together weren't an issue (and I think your vet was mistaken actually).

But I also remember someone mentioning "bupe" and that you should already have some on hand.

I went back through all your condos for the past two weeks, and I found this that Robert posted at the very end of one of them on 7/10. Maybe it just got missed since it was the last post on the condo the following morning?

Hi Jamie,
I'm getting in late on this, but wanted to add that you do have buprenex in the glass viles that were sent along with the syringes and needles to administer. I don't know dosage for Jupiter, but Mali at 8 lbs or so was getting .25ml between check and gum.
I am sorry for Jupe's and your pain and discomfort and hope you do get an earlier appt.
Hugs
Robert

Do you have the glass viles that Robert is talking about? If so, maybe someone who has used it can give you instructions on how to administer it? And it might take away the risk of combining the Tramodol with the Prozac. If it is pain that is causing Jupe to hide and not eat, and if people have been able to use Bupe without the kind of side effects you have been seeing, then maybe he'll be pain free AND have an appetite?

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Hi Jamie. Glad Jupiter is coming out from under the couch a bit more today. Jupiter lying on the bed with you and purring is good also. I hope the meds get him headed back to normal again. It's hard to read about a vet that doesn't take the time to listen to and address the concerns of a patients care giver.

Keeping you, Dane and Jupiter in our Prayers. Have a great day.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

In humans, the interaction of Prozac and Tramadol may do this

Sometimes, pharmacologists/physicians/vets/etc will deliberately use 2 drugs which interact, in very small doses, together. That way, if one slows the breakdown of the other or the effects are multiplicative, instead of additive, the combination won't build up too high.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

BJ's point is well taken with some drugs. This is not the case for the interaction between Prozac and Tramadol. It can increase agitation and potentially cause serotonin syndrome. While there can be an interaction between bupe and Prozac, the nature of the interaction is that it causes drowsiness.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Given the choice between drowsy and agitated.... I'd pick drowsy every time. If it's pain, I'd much rather sleep it off.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Jamie,

Here is what I would do...

If you have the Bupe, DO NOT give it to Jupiter before talking directly to your vet about it.

DO pester the vet clinic until you can get the vet on the phone. DON'T settle for one of the techs or receptionists who aren't going to translate exactly what the vet said, or what you said. After all of this is over, I think I'd be inclined to email or speak to the vet(s) who own the practice and let them know how their staff has treated you throughout this ordeal.

When you get the vet on the phone, stick to your guns. Tell her that you are aware of a possible adverse reaction to mixing Tramadol and Prozac. Google it. It's all over the place. You're vet might be one of those who feels that "you can't believe everything you read on the internet" doctors. But that's "old thinking". The internet, if used wisely, is an ideal source of information. These warnings aren't put out there by crazy cat people or conspiracy theorists. They are put out there by the medical community, so that people like your vet have a ready and reliable source of information at their disposal.
http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/prozac-weekly-with-tramadol-1115-649-2221-0.html
Compare that to the interaction between Bupe and Prozac:
http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/buprenorphine-naloxone-with-prozac-439-0-1115-648.html

Ask her, hypothetically since she hasn't written you a 'script for the Buprenex, if she would be willing to give the Bupe a chance to see if the side effects on Jupiter are not as risky or as likely. If she agrees, have her write the prescription. If you have some Bupe, then you don't need to get the prescription filled until you need more. But you'll have a prescription, and an appropriate dosage from the vet, so you would be able to switch, and do so safely.

Bottom line. This vet and this clinic work for YOU. Their top priority should be to give you and every other client they have the best, safest possible advice and treatment of your pets. You are paying their rent and you're paying their bills. They are liable for what they advise and prescribe. And if the vet just "screwed up" by not catching an adverse interaction of the meds she's prescribed, then if she's got half a brain in her head, she'll realize that and adjust his meds accordingly. But you need to be firm with her and make her understand that you won't take "no" for an answer, and you won't leave them alone until you, the customer, is satisfied. They don't have the right to just blow you off.

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

Hi Jamie--

No advice from me on meds, but I just wanted to let you know you're in my thoughts and prayers--you and Jupiter; I pray he is not in pain and that his appetite has gotten better. Hang in there :-D

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything

I gave civvie Sydney one dose of tramadol and she went crazy for hours! She wouldn't sit or lay down, she only paced, walked in circles and was very agitated. I contacted the vet and asked for bupe instead as I wasn't going to use tramadol again.

Sydney wasn't on any other meds and tramadol was very bad for her. Since you Jupe is having a tough time with it, I wouldn't give it again either. I would ask for bupe or something else (since you have other meds the cat is on and I don't know the interaction).

Re: 7/19 Jupiter PMBG/47 barely eating anything
