Re: 7/15 Hefner - long night x 2

After 45 minutes of meowing, I got up, closed the bedroom door, took the dog out, fed him Hefner, put cardboard on his door, And I'm sitting on the loveseat with Victoria on my lap. Its 4:30AM. I want his energy
.

Oh my, Is Hefner still in his kitty condo cage? I wonder if he wants out and on the bed with you, but I realize that is impossible right now with the integrating. There is somthing here that is sold in a health market that people use quite often to calm kitties, I just can't think of the name of it, and there is also one for humans. Maggie started talking at 1:00 am but then after some scritches she fell asleep and is in my bed after awaking me too early! What is wrong with this picture? I hope by now you went btd.

P.S. It just came to mind - it's called "Rescue Remedy." Let's see what suggestions other Beans have regarding Hefner.

Re: 7/15 Hefner - long night x 2

I use Rescue Remedy, which I buy at the health food store, for my cats when traveling.
I usually give a couple drops orally, and add a drop to the top of each paw, and some drops around in the carrier.
I found out that you can buy the children's formula for humans as it is the same as the pet formula and is a little cheaper. Just don't buy the adult formula for humans as it has alcohol in it.

Re: 7/15 Hefner - long night x 2

Yeah alcohol would make him louder and obnoxious

Poor thing Karrie. I cannot imagine how he feels without all that insulin in his body. :?

Have you tried to put Henry and him together first?

Re: 7/15 Hefner - long night x 2

I'm sorry I haven't gotten an opportunity to personalize all my responses and not getting to many condos every day.

It's not right to be jealous of a cat's energy bcatrun_gif

So far I've just done exchanging smells on towels and toys/scratchpads. They seem fine with the smells now. Victoria did some hissing and biting a couple days ago when she smelled him on my hand. Tonight I'm going to use the towels and rub the others towel on them. HAHA. They aren't gonna like that.

Tomorrow I plan on putting up two baby gates on his door with the upper level cardboarded off so no one can jump over at each other. I wish he were in the middle room and not the end room. They have to want to go visit there.

I'm getting some tips from Tena also. Trying to mix what worked for her and what is in the integration guide. They already have a visual through a foot high hole in the door with a baby gate in front of it. They just ignore him and his meows now. Henry has been hanging out in the bathroom more though. That's his safe spot.

I bought feliway spray for when we do more in depth exchanges like changing places. he will be 100% fine but Victoria and Henry will have more issues. I bought the diffuser when I got Henry and Victoria and it didn't seem to really help Henry at all.

did you really feed Hefner to the dog? ;-)

Re: 7/15 Hefner - long night x 2

HAHAHAHA  I meant to put Hefner in brackets (Hefner). Even saying that name sounds wrong. Makes me laugh and cringe at the same time.

Re: 7/15 Hefner - long night x 2

Bahahahaha! I'm sure feeding Hefner to the dog might be tempting just to get some sleep!

OMG, I am totally in love with Hefner! What a pretty, sweet (if noisy!) boy. Had to chuckle when I read you had fed him to the dog.

He is so lucky to have you! Fingers and paws crossed that integration goes well. Perhaps it is just that he wants company!!

Re: 7/19 Hefner - longest night

DH took his alarm clock downstairs. He would have killed me this morning. He didn't stop. He has like a hundred different meows and he was practicing them all last night. He wants out so badly.

We have baby gates up so he can see everyone.

We've done small exchanges of space - he hasn't gone into the whole house. Just the bedroom and the bathroom. But Henry and Victoria have been in to explore his room. Victoria will be a hard nut to crack. Henry and Hefner have met nose to nose and Henry was sitting in the hallway listening to the Hefner rhapsody last night.

Funny thing, this morning Henry was in the hallway (with Hefner meowing his head off in the back ground) and Henry did three beautiful out loud meows. DH laughed also.

So today, I'm going to escort Hefner around the house while I lock Victoria in the bedroom and Henry in the bathroom. Hefner is so mellow - not a growl or hiss out of him. He met our dog last night. He had to have come from a home with dogs. It couldn't have gone better. I was so nervous cause he weighs more than her and is all muscle.

Re: 7/19 Hefner - longest night

Hefner does sound like he's getting antsy...and with all the talking, he sounds like he'll be a fun one to have around once everything settles down! How awesome that Henry has started talking out loud, too - maybe he and Hef will be great buddies!! Hopefully Victoria won't be all that tough for all that long.

When we introduced Trixie into the crowd, we had to do all sorts of crazy stuff - the situation wasn't much different from Tena and Curry's, but with a lot more cats involved. And one of the first things we did was exactly what you're doing tonight...we let her have free run of the house for a few hours while everyone else was confined. We did that every day for probably at least a week; it gave her a lot more confidence to know all the nooks and crannies without being tailed by other kitties.

I love hearing these stories :-D !

Re: 7/19 Hefner - longest night

Amy, hearing from you, and Angela and others that deal with many cats actually makes me feel less overwhelmed. Thank you for sharing. Tena shared what they did and its helping me plan for things also. I wish I had an open crate like she did. I may go buy one. I think that would really help Victoria get used to him. Hefner isn't going to be the problem. He is so easy going. I actually think him and Henry may be friends. Victoria is very territorial. If Henry goes on the living rooms scratch post she boxes him away. Her ears go down and you know Henry is going to be smacked. I feel bad for him. He is the sensitive shy child. She's the bossy demanding one (that loves lap time).

Re: 7/19 Hefner - longest night

We used a crate with Trixie, too...it was a very useful tool. She was the last to come into the herd, and she was/is also very, very territorial. The first time we tried to introduce her to the crowd, someone startled her and we had our very first, absolutely terrifying blood-curdling cat fight. Even I was afraid of her for a while after that! But that's when someone from PetFinder suggested I use a crate to introduce her, so we got her a crate for a 100lb dog, set it up with a litter box, two beds (hubby built a "loft"), her food and water. She "lived" in the crate in our family room for quite a while; that allowed her to get used to the sights, sounds, and smells, while being protected. She had "outside" time every day...lots of permutations with all the other cats. It was a lot of work - took close to 6 months to get her integrated - but it was well worth it.

Hopefully, over time, everyone there will come to a mutual understanding. It's not always easy to integrate cats, but I think with patience and effort it's usually doable, and it's fabulous that you're taking everyone into consideration - not that I ever thought you would do it any differently  ! I get so edgy when I hear stories of people who bring a new cat in, toss him/her in with the old crowd, expect the to just "work it out", the get upset when there is dischord and things like inappropriate elimination. Cats are sensitive...they need time and understanding.

Re: 7/19 Hefner - longest night

Wow six months. I thought Tena's 4 months was a long time. I don't know what to expect with him and Victoria. I expect I'll use the crate for a week at the most. Hefner is SUCH a vocal cat. Its like his own Sound Of Music production in there most of the time. He wants out so badly. Everyone in the house seems relaxed with scents and sounds. He enjoyed his walk about the house and learned how to escape over the baby gates so we are back to door closed. He's complaining away. I'll get a crate when I'm out today. I bet that will make things go smoother.

Re: 7/19 Hefner - longest night

Running late for work, so just a quick reply.

Smart little guy, huh, breaking free like that! The "closed door" thing was probably what started causing territorial issues with Trix. She was stuck behind closed doors for a long time, because - long story short - she was outside as a stray for awhile, and she hadn't been spayed yet. We had to wait for her to gain wait so she could be spayed, and we had to wait 6 weeks before we could confirm she was FIV/FeLV neg. So she was stuck. Not being able to see anyone just added to her stress.

So yep, since Hef has figured out the gate jump, getting him out in a crate so everyone can see eachother sooner is probably great idea. No doubt, though, the singing will continue!!

Off to work!

Re: 7/19 Hefner - longest night

Hi Karrie, you're getting a lot of good advice on integrating Hefner into the family. It sounds like Victoria definitely wants to be the Alpha boss kitty of the house. I love it that Henry started talking; you may just have two talkers. Mikey (GA kitty) showed Maggie how to talk and get what she wants! I love hearing the updates, and it's helping me should I ever decide on a companion kitty for Maggie. Have a nice day.

Re: 7/19 Hefner - longest night

I am very lucky to have you guys supporting me through this. I'm going to get a clicker like Tena used at Petsmart also.

DH asked last night - so what are you going to do with him now that he's not diabetic. I told him I'm still fostering him. He can't go back or he'll live in a cage because of special diet and they'll just start him on the diabetic kibble again. He goes... THREE cats looking at me with a look. And he goes, as long as he doesn't be mean to Henry. So that would be the kicker for DH. But that would also be a non negotiable with me. Henry needs to feel safe and secure in his own home. I have a feeling they are going to be good friends though. We will see.

Patrick got Hefner on his iphone this morning. Its only a small clip of what I mean by.... "He doesn't stop".

Turn the volume up. The iphone volume recording was on the quiet side:

love the video....and Hefner too....

how about changing that name?

by what you are describing i can see Henry and Hefner being buddies....and Victoria keeping her distance....but that's a good thing....Henry will have a nice companion...especially since he is so shy....

as per Nike....she sounds like Comet...easy going!!! good for her!!!

I am thinking of changing his name for sure. Not sure to what though. I have to get to know his personality a little more.

He's actually out loose right now! He's such a mellow cat. He's avoiding Victoria and she's not being an evil attack cat like I thought she would be. Henry just lies down and observes him. Not a hiss or a growl out of him. They had been meeting at the baby gate though and never had an issue there either.

I just love Hefner and his talking. I think he will settle down and not meow as much once he is free to roam with Henry and Victoria, but still be a talker. It does sound like Hefner and Henry will become friends. Hefner just might bring Henry out of himself more, too! Can't wait to see what you name him.

Karrie, I loved the video of Hefner (Harper) meowing. Cleo went nuts when she heard him. She ended up meowing through the whole video. I think she is in love with H's voice. By the way, I like the name Harper.

Great job with the integration. It sounds like things are going to be fine and it is wonderful that Nike is ok with 3 kitties invading her space.

Gizmo came up to investigate where the hollering kitty was!!! What a cutie. I'm not sure I'd think the meowing was so cute if it was going on all night long, though.

Thank you guys. I'm so glad I can share him/them. Hefner kept investigating his own meowing too and meowing back. He likes his own voice. I think I figured that out already. Honestly hours like this. Made me want to get out the insulin ... okay you guys better know I'm joking there.

He's been out walking around the house for an hour and a half now. Victoria stays up high but no growling or hissing since he was first let out. He walked away from her. I think that was a sign that she was boss and he respected her. Now she's on the couch arm just watching him. He's lying down on the hardwood. Honestly this can't be going any better. I am going to lock him away tonight. He won't go unsupervised just in case.

He is great with our dog Nike also. Sniffs her butt and walks away. She doesn't mind him at all either. Do you guys think he must have been exposed to dogs before? Or he's just super mellow. I think his mellowness is wonderful. So easy going. Victoria is a bossy diva, Henry is a bit skittish and very submissive.

Wow, that is amazing that Hefner/Harper is out and about the house. When he is out exploring, is he still meowing? It's great he respects Victoria as the boss kitty of the house. Have a good night. Maybe Hefner will be tired out and sleep like a baby!

It sounds like he's saying "anybody there?" "HelloOOooooOOO" "Damnit they left me locked up!" "HellloooOOOooOOO"

Enana's ears went up and she started looking for "the cat".

Thanks for the advice Karrie. I will tell you how he is doing ok? I know a cat loosing weight makes you nervous, but I'll do it slowly, like Dr. Lisa says. :-D :-D

I am switching him first to twice a day feeding with dry food (i'm giving him a little canned food mid-cycle).

After he gets used to not free feeding, I'll switch him to canned food. It's going to take a while.

Thanks for caring :-D {{hug}}
