Good evening LL,

7/4 condo

WCR I took Sara to the vet on saturday after she peed on the puppy pad. I had noticed that her eyes were running a little but didn't think much of it till she urinated on the floor. That has always been Sara's way of telling me hey I don't feel good. She did it when she was DX with diabetes and than again with hyper T.

She took blood but couldn't get a C&S because her bladder was empty. So I was given the task to collect it. I brought it by monday after work. It was easy Sara has always been cooperative. The good news is that her blood work looks very good. Her bg was 88! I'm very proud of that! The vet [not my normal vet] was very surprised that her being diabetic that she had such a good #. Not me. :-D

Her thyroid was excellent to. 2.5 The only thing that was a little high was her calcium. 11.1 [8.2-10.8 normal]

The whites of her eyes have always been a little pink but they are bloodshot now. Her inner ear flaps have little crusty red things. I also noticed that on her chin she has a couple clusters of this hard almost scabby stuff except it's lightish brown in color. I'm going to try to put a picture of that here but sorry it's not a good picture. It was hard to get it up close with having to hold her head up. Also she had lost some weight. About 3 pounds she's down to 11pd. I didn't even notice that. [she is a full figured kitty] Otherwise she is eating and going to the bathroom.

Q Has anybody come across anything similar to these symptoms? I have no idea what it could be. I'm worried. I will find out tomorrow on the urine test.

I am going away for the weekend on friday but she is coming with me. We have a pet friendly motel. The timing just isn't good.

Thanks. Hope everybody has a good night.

Jan: GREAT news on the blood work but they can't do a c&s on a specimen collected at home. A c&s needs to be done on a sterile sample that they do by cystocentesis at the vet's office. I would not trust any results of a c&s which was not done on a sterile urine sample done by the vet.

It's hard to tell in the picture but it looks like she may have a pretty involved case of feline acne on her chin. That can be caused by eating off plastic dishes, drinking out of plastic bowls, or some other allergy. I think it is important that your vet look at her with the "whole cat" in mind and not at these three things separately. While separately, you might think the chin is feline acne, the eyes are some kind of conjunctivitis, and the ears are mites or just wax buildup, taken collectively, it might mean some kind of allergy. Did the vet not notice these three things on Saturday? Feline acne can really get out of hand and become like small abscesses that are painful. It has to be treated daily with a good scrub.

Having said that, I still think she needs to see the vet again and have those three things specifically addressed. IMHO :-D

Thanks Marjorie, I know the urine test isn't a C&S now. I wish she had been able to get urine that day. Something is going on with her. All these things have come up all at once. She doesn't eat out of plastic but I have heard of that. The vet did notice that her earflaps where irritated but did not notice her chin. I wish my regular vet had been working. :-| Also I'm going away for the weekend on friday. So this comes at a bad time.

Sorry to hear about this. Hope you find some answers soon.

You might want to print out directions to the closest ER animal hospital from where ever you're staying. The crusty ear probably won't be a cause for any emergency but you never know what else might happen. And having it on paper is a good backup in case there's no cell phone reception, your batteries are low, etc. It's just one less thing to think about if you're in panic mode.

Hi Jan, I'm sorry not to be able to answer your question. Rusty had the ear scabs (actually they were just below the ear flap) several months ago, but they cleared up (I thought they might be mites, but they were not.) Perhaps Sara's scabs are heat-related? It has been a hot summer. I hope you can get some answers soon so that you can go away this weekend without added worries. The weight loss might be from the hyper T? Will your regular vet be back before Friday?

Sending healing vines to Sara,

Any chance you can post a pic of Sara's ear scabs? Have they spread at all, healed in one spot, then moved to another, etc? I would give her a full rub down and make sure she doesn't have scabs anywhere else. If you do find crusties in other areas or if there appears to be spreading of the ears, I'd have your vet run a skin biopsy when you return. That will help rule out some conditions like pemphigus (which Willie has), and you can also start to consider whether it may be an allergy issue.

I'd agree that the chin looks like feline acne, which is easily treatable and is often reduced/eliminated by changes to eating/drinking containers. We use a large mocha mug for a water bowl and small glass ramekins for food. They are great for grazer sized portions of wet food.

Fingers and paws crossed that you can get to the bottom of whatever is bothering Miss Sara soon!! May your upcoming travels be safe!
