Friday Friday Friday!

Although Polly had a few just-over-the-border blues, I upped her dose after six cycles at 6.0 to 6.5 this am. Trying to keep ahead of the numbers.

I'll take time this weekend gathering info about the Michigan State diagnostics for IAA and acro for my vet. He is such a nice young man! (He doesn't think Polly has either issue 'cuz his endocrinology text claims the conditions are rare. But he admitted its copyright was '01 and the info I was finding was more recent. "I'd like to take a look at it; I went into medicine to dig into problems and solve them. This sounds interesting."

I hope we can get a blood draw next week and send it out. As Dr. N said, "the only down-side to testing is the cost. At least you'll get some answers." And, really, that's all I want. So glad to have my vet on my side even if he does think I'm trying to catch shadows.

And that's the news from our neighborhood this morning. Oh, and did I say, It's FRIDAY!

Good luck with the dose increase and paws crossed.

Your vet sounds like a great guy. Any time a vet is willing to listen to the CG, it's a big plus. I hope the tests go well and you'll have answers in the next few weeks. I think acro and IAA are not rare. Wendy and Julie have the stats in their heads. I have them on my computer and next time I'm on it, I'll dig them out.

Tiger and I are keeping our paws and fingers crossed for this dose increase - C'mon down Polly! So glad to hear your vet is supportive of you and Polly, that makes your job so much easier!

I'm still looking to see if I can find the article with numbers but this article on Acromegaly (which Wendy or Julie might have already linked for you since they sent it to me), discusses that the prevalence of it is higher than was originally thought and references "two" studies.

Good job on that increase. Paws crossed you'll break through to more blue soon.

I don't have stats on IAA frequency - some vets don't think it's relevant to test for it, but it does make a difference in dosing strategies so good to know. And it's supposed to resolve itself over time. Also good to know but you have to keep on your toes when it happens.

Acromegaly has been studied more. One UK study showed 59 of diabetic 184 cats (around 30%) with higher concentrations of IGF-1 than normal. 18 of the 57 were further studied (CT scans) and acromegaly confirmed in 17 of them. There haven't been studies (that I know of) to prove whether or not there are acromegalic cats who do not have diabetes. In that same study, of the cats with increased IGF-1, 5% of the cats were long haired and 10% were females and the average ages was 11. Neko is also a long haired female. She should play the lottery. :roll: She also doesn't really show much of the classic symptoms, except her crazy hunger (much better now). The article is "Feline Aromegaly: An Underdiagnosed Endocrinopathy?" S.J.M Niessen et al, J Vet Intern Med 2007;21:899–905. It's supposed to be on the catagromegaly site, but it seems to be down when I checked just now.

My vet didn't think I should do the tests until Neko got to 10 units - we never got that high. But she was willing to learn and has since diagnosed a second acrocat at her practice. I was really impressed by Neko's acupuncture vet who did a bunch of research on acros (including the Niessen one) before our first appointment. It's great to have a supportive vet. I hear of a lot that don't. :sad:

As for the blood draw, the tests for IGF-1 levels are only done once a week. If the blood doesn't arrive at MSU by Wednesday, you'll be waiting another week for answers. I think I maximized the amount of time I had to wait. nailbite_smile

Feline acromegaly is NOT rare.... I found that TWO of my cats tested positive, one as also positive for IAA, and another acro owner had one of her other cats tested who has some signs but does not need insulin.... guess what? that cat tested positive!
What's in the books is not what's being found in the real world.
