Georgia and Simon (GA)

Member Since 2010
I am kind of worried about Simon. He has not been eating any of his overnight food in the automatic feeder and this morning he threw up. He also still has some diarrhea. I tried to give him his pepcid in a pill pocket, but he wouldn't even eat that. he loves pill pockets! He ate all of his food last night but about 1/4 this morning. Do you think it could be side effects from the zymox ear drops? I'm going to have to look up the side effects today. Simon is a cat that always eats, no matter what so this is not like him. And this is not the time for him to get sick since I am dealing with Cleo's new diagnosis of CRF. A little overwhelming to say the least.

I'll try to get back from work today to check on both of them. Work always interferes with everything that is going on!
Hope everyone has a good day.

Re: 7/18 Georgia's Simon AMPS 213

I would call the vet just in case Georgia. Is his belly painful? Throwing up food like Wellness which is high in fat makes me wonder about pancreatitis. Has he had this before? The vet would know if its a side effect of the pred drops.

Is he vomiting food or clear/frothy vomit?

If he's vomiting food, how long after he eats is he vomiting?

The diahrea - is it a decent amount? (Wondering about constipation with leak through).

Just throwing out ideas to help trouble shoot. You have a lot on your plate.

Do you have a thermometer where you can check his temperature?

Re: 7/18 Georgia's Simon AMPS 213

when it rains it pours. Sorry you're dealing with so much. The not eating is always so worrisome with our FD cats. Perhaps some anti nausea shot like cerenia, it worked wonders for Tray. I hope it's nothing major.
Keeping you, Simon and Cleo in my thoughts

Hi Georgia, I'm adding my good thoughts and vines for Simon. I also think a call to the Vet is a good idea. Sorry you are dealing with so much at one time. Hugs.

Re: 7/18 Georgia's Simon AMPS 213

Hi Georgia-

I'm so sorry Simon isn't feeling well. I would call the vet, too, to see if the drops may be bothering Simon. We all certainly understand your worry! I hope he's feeling better ASAP!!!

Thinking of you! You certainly have had your fill lately. Two steps forward, three back. Hopefully you get some answers on Simon. Poor kitty. Healing vines sent your way.

Re: 7/18 Georgia's Simon AMPS 213

Hi Georgia, Just got an email from Claudia. She knew Simon was on pred drops and not pills. She wanted me to post this on her behalf. She won't have access to an internet browser until lunch:

Oh darn....i never saw that post....

Steroids are steroids no matter the form...if he is not eating when giving the med then he will feel really sick....as the med will hit his system on an empty stomach....

Have you had meds on an empty stomach? Especially the strong ones....they make you feel pretty crappy...at least that’s how i feel....

If it were me i would call the vet....

Passing on hugs.

I came home from work to check on Simon. He had finished his food I left out for him from breakfast and is now eating well at lunch. I gave him the FF fish which he loves and rarely gets. I have been giving him the steroid drops after his breakfast. He ate about 1 tablespoon this morning so he did have a little on his tummy before the drops. I also gave him a Pepcid so maybe that is helping his stomach. His diarrhea isn't too bad, just a little watery and soft (sorry -- sounds gross!). I am thinking that maybe it is because his legs are bothering him. I have noticed he can't jump up on things lately and he stumbles sometimes going up the stairs. I think maybe he has some arthritis?? Should he be on some type of anti-inflammatory or pain med for this? I'll call the vet to see what he says. I think I call him every day so he must think I am the biggest pain in the you know what.

When he goes down the stairs - does he bunny hop? Keeping his back legs together - not using one at a time?

(((((Simon))))

We just started our civvie Mario on Adequan just over a month ago for his arthritis. It seems to be helping him a fair amount. Like Simon, he's not as "graceful" on the stairs as he used to be, nor can he jump like he used to. The Adequan makes Mario seem a little "looser". I would definitely give the vet a call if you suspect arthritis, since there are options to help with it!

Glad to hear Simon ate a bit today!

Re: 7/18 Georgia's Simon AMPS 213 +6 179

hi Georgia,
when was the last time his K+ was checked? was it normal?
usually with arthritis they're stiff but it sounds as though it may be ear related....not sure you've ever had an ear infection but they say one tends to lose balance...so i'm wondering if it is more related to what's going on in Simon's ear if his K+ values were normal last checked....

Cosequin or Dasuquin are good to give as supplement for the arthritis....it does take a few weeks to take effect...Adequan or Gabapentin (can't remember the spelling) i believe is more pain related for arthritis....you don't wanna go that route without first addressing the ear issues....the supplement is ok but not the pain meds in my opinion....since you really don't know what you are dealing with....

hope others can chime in....

the pepcid is good to give....maybe give before you go to bed this way it will tie him over the night and he can get his midnight snack....

sorry to read you are having challenges...and yes it is overwhelming with all you are dealing with...

prayers and hugs going your way!

Re: 7/18 Georgia's Simon AMPS 213 +6 179

I haven't had a chance to look at the board or others condos today -- too crazy at work! Still here at work, but taking a moment to post.

Karrie, Simon's throw up today was just clear, no hairball or food. Does that mean anything in particular? Simon mostly goes down and up the stairs one leg at a time and doesn't bunny hop.

Claudia, the last time Simon had bloodwork was in November, 2010 and his potassium was fine. I didn't really think about how the ear problems may be causing his balance issues. Before his ear scratching issues, I dont' remember him having as many problems with his back legs. He has been on the ear drops for 7 days now and I don't see any difference with his balance. Shouldn't I see a change if he has been on the drops for that amount of time? If he continues with the leg problems, then I might need to put him on some type of supplement or med after talking with my vet. I'll also give him the Pepcid tonight to see if that helps wtih his tummy in the middle of the night.

I called the vet today about Simon, but he has been swamped with people in his office so I probably won't hear back from him until later or tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone else for all your support and comments. It means so much to me!

Hi guys .. I don't have any answers for your questions, but wanted to let you know we are thinking of you guys!

Re: 7/18 Georgia's Simon PMPS 202

Simon seems to be feeling a little better tonight. He ate all his dinner (FF salmon) and then tried to finish off Cleo's. He even ate a little more when his girlfriend, Rosie, stopped by. I'm going to give him a Pepcid tonight before bed to see if that helps.

2nd day of subq fluids for Cleo. Didn't go as well as yesterday, but not too bad. She lunged for a Temptations and when she did that, the needle popped out. I had to put it back in (I hope that is ok to do) and then she wasn't too happy. Needless to say, she got a little wet from the whole experience and hissed at us when we put her back down on the floor. I don't know how anyone does this without 2 people!

I'm going to try and visit some condos tonight -- I haven't been a very good visitor lately.

Hi guys -sorry to be so late in posting tonight... I can't help with any of the issues here today but do wish Simon well. Feel better Simon! I am glad that he is eating better. I hope Rosie keeps coming by. :-D

Good luck with Cleo - soon you'll be pros! - I hear it all comes with practice.

have a great rest of the evening!

Hi Georgia: rough day there it sounds like. I hope Simon will eat better tomorrow.

Usually clear vomit, especially if it's foamy, indicates an acid tummy. CRF cats get this usually in the morning when their tummies have been empty overnight. That's why it's important to give them food as late as possible and also 1/4 of a 10 mg pepcid AC late.

We got in the habit of not allowing our cats to just hop off the condo when we were done with fluids. We always had something they could look forward to so they would stay and not bolt. That way, you stay in control. I would not use the same needle twice......mostly because once you use it, it dulls it and so it hurts more going in the second time. But also, you don't know what it might have come in contact with and you dont' want any bacteria on it. Chances are veyr slim but never say never.

Tomorrow will be better. A year ago, my DH had to have a neighbor come over and pet Teddi while he did fluids (I was gone for work). Now, I actually think he is much better at it than I am.
