Yesterday was a really good day for Tommy again. I had to work so thank goodness my husband came home during lunch to test (+6 116) and I wouldn't be home for at least a few more hours following that test so he gave some HC and just a drop of Karo. When I got home and tested @ +8.5 he was 152 :smile: . I had no way of knowing if he would continue to go down from the 116 so we played it safe. It looks as though the right decision was made, this time!
Today looks as though it's going to be a good day again(anti-jinx). Fortunately I am off today so I can keep the bottom from dropping out. I have yet to figure out what to do if he has a trend like today on a day that I have to work and DH can't get home to test and feed HC if needed. I can't leave out food, because Teddy would eat it and separating them is not an option. My thought is to just play it safe and give a little HC before I leave the house at +2 and pray he surfs for me. Hopefully he'll only do this scenario when I am off :lol: :lol:

I just gave him 1tbsp of Special Kitty with Duck and Wild Rice in Gravy. This is the first time I've tried this particular food. I'm not sure if it's HC so if any one has any insight that would be cool. Shame on me, I was assuming anything with the word Gravy after it would be HC .I'll be testing again in 15min..

Sienne, thanks. I think so too! And I also wanted to respond to what you suggested about shooting earlier. 7am is about as early as I can go. I tried 6a.m and it just didn't work out too well. If my husband can keep coming home on the days I work, we should be fine.("should be") being the operative 2 words nailbite_smile. I am able to at least get a +1,+2 before I walk out the door.

Thought I should check after 15min since I had never given that food before and I'm glad I did.. I've gone back to the 9-lives HC tender slices w/ real beef in gravy.. Come on Tommy up a bit for me please!!!
Patty, thanks, I hope so too although it kind of scares me now that I won't be around to catch it all the time.. I don't know how everyone here who has a full time job away from home manages the stress of the possibility of their kitties going low while they are away.. nailbite_smile

you can give him more than a TBSP of HC with that karo if he needs it...

As much as I want even a part time job, right now it's not a good time for me because I'd be worried sick about what Blackie plans on doing. She's an enigma as it is. :lol: I need to learn Feline Mind Reading.

Jill, It's great to hear from you, thanks for telling Tommy he needed to come back up now and thanks for the advice, I really wasn't sure how much more I could give at a time. Should I always give more HC and keep the Karo to a maximum 1tsp each serving?.. It looks as though this time the amt I gave worked, but I'm guessing that won't always be the case.

Angela, thank you too for telling him to slow down and come back up.. He's finally listening.
I had no choice but to find work right now otherwise there could be a possibility of us losing our home :cry: As soon as we are in a better financial state I might be able to change the work situation but for now, it is not an option.. mind reading our kitties would be the greatest thing since sliced bread :lol:

You sure he's not attached to a bungee cord...? I think you'd better check him just in case. :lol:

i sure wish there was a one size fits all answer to your question, but there isn't. how much HC and/or karo will depend a lot on where you are in the cycle, the rate of the drop, and tommy's individual response to HC. all any of us can do, whether our kitties have acromegaly or not, is to get to the point where we "know" our cat's response. acros have pancreas' that work so you have to be more careful, but this is something you already know. erring on the side of caution is never, ever a bad way to go.

Hey Lauren: it's great to see Tommy doing so fantastic!! He gave you a run for your money today!!! Nice job managing his curve.

I know you asked Jill the question about giving more HC and less karo. She and I have had the discussion of karo before and I know she *prefers* to not use it unless we have a kitty in an unsafe situation (hypo) that we have to get up immediately. We've used it alot with Gracie in the past because she "stores" her carbs, doesn't inch upwards, and then explodes skyward but she seems to be changing and I've tried to get away from it most of the time. Jill's very valid point to me was "it's giving sugar to a diabetic". So true. The "I don't know" factor is with the acro.....how low can you let them get and still be sure you can get them up quickly? IMHO..and that's all it is....if you can get him up quickly with HC, that might be a better option but since I know nothing about acro....there definitely are better opinions out there (Libby for sure and Jill).

And so, fairly, you might ask...."why did you give me yours?" :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Tommy didn't respond too well to the first dose of HC like he normally does, nor did he respond too well to the second in which I added a 1/2tsp. in fact he dropped more ohmygod_smile, so I'm even more confused now is what I'm saying, that's why I gave the full 1tsp of Karo and1tbsp of HC.. I'm guessing now that was way too much.

Marje, you know I trust your opinion very much! Don't ever stop giving it to me ok! Tommy is very difficult to read most of the time. I don't know if it's the Acro or not. I just try my best to adjust to the situation that's in front of me and make the best decision I can for him. I don't always get it right :?
Mark is doing well as are all of our critters..I miss you too very much!!
Mark has his hat into the mix right now for a shot at a pretty big promotion so keep good thoughts coming this way ok!

I agree. I think Jill's answer is true for all of our kitties. I tend to use Karo to bump numbers because Gabby' can sometimes be sensitive to the gluten in gravy. That's my cat. each time you deal with lower numbers, you'll learn something about Tommy and how he responds. There is a similar discussion in Zener's condo today. Like Tommy, but because of Zener's CH, we don't want his numbers to go too low. It's a matter of becoming familiar and confident in how to manage your cat's numbers and you did a great job. I do think that with the acro kitties sometimes where a teaspoon of gravy will work with a non-acro, you need a lot more with the acro kitties -- but where in the cycle, etc. will also be a factor.

I'll tell you right now this boy is gonna drive me crazy @-) with these numbers.. I guess I gave him way too much to bring him back up earlier.. What's a girl to do ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile.. Now I'm hoping he puts the brakes on and doesn't keep climbing too high..
Karrie and Celi, thanks for the good wishes and the kudos on Tommy's numbers today.. I wish he had surfed a bit longer though..

Wow! Tommy kept you busy today! Hopefully he stops there and doesn't keep going up for you. I don't use karo, just gravy. Tarragon skyrockets into the 400s with the karo. Every kitty is so different and the acro would be hard to manage.
