Hi everyone:

I know I could post this to Health but there are a ton of you familiar with giving squids. A friend of mine (who does not live here or else I'd give her a bag of ours) said her kitty is dehydrated and she wants to give him some fluids and take him to the vet tomorrow. Her neighbor is a nurse who has several pets and who has some LRS that expired in 2005. My friend wants to know if it is safe to give these fluids to her kitty. I have no idea but I, personally, wouldn't use LRS that is more than a year or so old but I have no reason upon which to base that.

So those of you in the know....what do you think? I appreciate any input.

Try doing a search of the FDMB site. I think I remember someone asking this question here or in the FB group. I think (underscore "think") the reply was that as long as there weren't floaties, it's fine. However, 6 years seems like you might want a new bag of squids. The bottom line question to me would be that if she's a nurse, would she give the LRS to a human? If she wouldn't give the bag to a person, I wouldn't give it to an animal.

yikes... expired in 2005. they *may* be good (no floaties), but i have to say... i wouldn't give them to alex.
i had some bags that were past the expiration date by a few months. my vet said not to give them, but he may have been overly cautious.

i would not use anything older than 6 months from the expiration date....the chemicals in it do lose their intended effect...so she may end up doing more harm than good...so i would not give those fluids...
