CSU Day 1

Good Afternoon LL,

Sitting here at CSU with Lu-Ann, just had a talk with Dr. Griffin, the both of us were allowed in at the same time, killing 2 birds with 1 stone in a way i suppose  Dr. Griffin went over the tumor and radiation planning with us and we both had a million questions for her. Turns out Leo's tumor is 0.314 cm3, whatever that means......Grayson's tumour came in at 0.306 cm3, so Leo wins the tumour race  I guess pituitary tumours are better grown in Canada!!

Dr. Griffin said Leo was just in his little cage snoozing away, he'd lift his head up and give a meow every now and then, but she said he's very relaxed. 1 of our boys has already gone in for his treatment but we haven't yet heard who.

I fed Leo 4 1/2 cans of food between 6 and midnight last night....my poor guy was literally starving. I fell asleep with Leo curled up in my arms last night, and he tried waking me up twice with his "i'm hungry" meows and was hungry this morning and was looking for food after i gave him his shot.

I dropped off my guy and went back to the hotel and had myself a nice nap, i needed it. I'm not used to sleeping only 6 hours a night, i need my 8-9 hours of beauty sleep to function properly :-D

Will check in a little later. Thanks everyone for stopping by our condo these last few days with nice words of support, i can feel the LL love surrounding Leo and I.

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

Congratulations to Leo on the tumor race!   Those are both big, but, like you said yesterday, that is not a bad thing. I hope you are getting some much needed rest. How sweet that you snuggled Leo all night. Great news on his appy. We are all here with you Tracy and watching for updates!! :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

Good idea on the BTB. Poor starving Leo, though! I'm glad that he is so settled in there, no added stress for Leo! except the fuds! Thinking of both of you!

Boy, leo! you sure can eat a lot! We'll be back w/ even more fishies tonight! -- Tess

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

Leo is such a trooper! If the tumor is a sphere, that would be a diameter of 0.33 in = 0.84 cm. Thinking of you guys today and sending good aim vines to the vetty team. (((((Tracy)))))

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

Awwww..... Poor guy! We know how much Leo loves his fuds. It sounds like he's going to get to eat all evening if he's not allowed to eat a few hours before his treatment.

I love that he fell asleep in your arms.

Tracy and Leo, thinking of you! Yikes, Leo sure was hungry. Just wait til he comes home and catches some mousies. Sounds like you really needed that nap. Hugs for you and scritches to Leo.

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

  Engineers is right Ann!!

Since i'm sitting here waiting i figured i might as well say what Dr. Griffin told us, i hope it'll be helpful for Wendy and Neko who are considering coming down to CSU.

Of all the kitties they have treated with acromegaly 20% have gone OTJ, the rest have gone down considerably in dose and have levelled off in dose as well. Within 7-70 weeks i should see a difference from the treatment....i know that's quite an amount of time but Dr. Griffin said ECID. Tumours that are left to grow or that are extremely large will eventually affect the optic chiasm and cause blindness and eventually neurologic symptoms, but for the most part their hearts will continue to grow as well as their organs, heart and kidney disease can be a major concern, as well as growth of the soft palette, paws and heads. Leo's symptoms so far are growth of his soft palette, head and paws. Grayson on the other hand has organ growth and a heart murmur. Oh and i can't forget the out of control diabetes and large doses of insulin; and in some cases, insulin resistance. In acrocats their pancreas' are functioning properly and are outputting insulin, the growth hormone has just overtaken everything and not letting the insulin do its job.

The pituitary tumour is irradiated from 7 different angles and hit with a dose of 800 cGrays per day for 3 days for a total dose of 24 Grays total. This part i understand since thru work i am a nuclear energy worker, and know a bit about radiation. The surrounding areas of the brain will get a small amount of radiation but it shouldn't be enough to affect Leo in the future, the worst case scenario is Leo could become hyperthyroid in the future.

Potential side effects of the treatment is a temporary condition of severe lethargy which could be treated with prednisolone (sp?) for a short period of time. Dr. Griffin said they have to be careful about using steroids with diabetic kitties.

Hope this helps!

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

Tracy, thanks for writing all this down. I have a call/message into CSU so just waiting for a call back to figure out when we can get down there. I really appreciate all the details. I guess we'll see whether they grow them bigger in Canada! Her IGF numbers are higher, but I don't know if that means anything. Leo's were higher than Grayson.

Any mice around your hotel room? Sounds like Leo has an excellent appetite in the evenings. He's quite the trooper.

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

Hey, Tracy -

This is my first visit to your condo. We've been on Levemir just over a month (switched from ProZinc) and are still trying to get to know everyone. Thank you for your explanation of what's going on with Leo and Grayson. I'm completely ignorant of the going on and was actually going to try to do a little reading on it tonight...between what and what I don't know!

As I said to Lu earlier, I'm praying all goes well with the boys - for wisdom and guidance for the medical personnel and peace for y'all. It's so nice that y'all are there together, so neither of you has to go through this alone...physically alone, I mean. Of course, we're with you in spirit :-D

Have a wonderful day -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Even worse: engineering professor of German descent    You have to admit that my diameter number makes a lot more sense than the volume number. ;-)

Very informative condo today...thank you, everyone! With HyperT being "worst case scenario", I see only good things in our sweet Leo's future!! I hope he's enjoying tons of fuds this evening, and you're both getting the rest you need!!

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

God bless you 2!!
Dont know how you do it, my head is spinning right now just reading all of that
and I surely would not be able to remember all that , much less repeat it!
you guys are doing great
I am praying for all 4 of you!

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

Tracy, I'm sending you lots of healing vines for Leo and energy for you. You are doing such a wonderful thing... Keep us posted.

Sorry Tracy - not meaning to side track your condo - but that was too fun. Loved the explanation - you did well with ti for all us laymans. Clarity rules!

we are thinking of you, and hope that all went well today.

Re: 7/17 Leo AMPS 275 Day 2 @ CSU

did you notice any eye involvement with leo? punkin's pupils were fixed open for a while - i realized it while we were driving to CSU. they are now nearly normal, not quite, but the pupils now close 90-95% of the way they should. he can still see, fortunately, although his vision may be somewhat impaired. as long as he doesn't need to read the newspaper, though, it all seems to work! ;-)

don't know if you remember, but punkin had a nearly immediate response to the SRT. i think he had 3 dose reductions in the first week, so it's possible that leo may see action sooner than they are predicting. just something to add to your pile of info.

thanks for all the updates!! so glad that you're sharing your story with all of us.

Sorry Tracy. I couldn't resist because I'm a registered engineer in California, and Liz, that would make it about the size of a pea. I'm Pennsylvania Dutch, thus a reference to farm produce. Wishing a full recovery to both of the boys.

I'm a math idiot, but I did enjoy drawing the figures in geometry.

Hi Tracy & Leo,

Sounds like a good conference with the doctor. We are all thinking of you and Lu and Grayson and hoping that everything will continue to go well. Leo, there must be some mousies somewhere in that motel!

Have a good night's sleep!

Hey Julie -
Grayson has had glassy eyes a couple of times since his ketone scare in late February. His eyes have not been slits for ages - most of the time, looks like he just came from the opthamologist! I think both of us would be thrilled w/ dose reductions. I remember cringing the first time I shot 6 units into him (ProZinc), and now I shoot 16 w/o flinching. That's scary, no matter how you slice it! I'm anxious to see a response in his numbers... they've been so much better since we've been on Lev.... but there's still much room for improvement. But if Grayson's behavior today is any indication of what Leo & he have in store, I think we're gonna be REALLY REALLY pleased with the results.

Thanks to all for sharing all the good vibes, thoughts & prayers!

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by our condo today. Leo's treatment went well today, last night i noticed he was very hoarse and had a raspy meow, he was also coughing a lot. I told Leo's personal assistant today about it and the anesthesiologist heard about it and looked at Leo's trachea while putting down the endoscope down (they use it to monitor his heartbeat and breathing rate among other things, he also was intubated too) they noticed Leo's trachea was quite irritated, so they gave him an anti inflammatory today, not metacam! I remembered to ask and he seems much better tonight, no coughing but still barely able to meow. The poor cat needs some cough drops i think.

Lu, my sister and niece and i all went out for a nice supper and we just got back, Leo was snoozing by his kitty dish when we walked in the door, he was probably wishing some food would magically appear. He's kind of high tonight, so i gave him his full 13u and hopefully that brings him down even more.

Thanks for all the laughs about the engineers in LL, i had a nice giggle reading about all the responses

I can't say that i've noticed Leo having pupil problems, he seems to be just fine in that area.

More to come tomorrow! Have a great night all :-D
