Georgia and Simon (GA)

Not the best AMPS for Simon but this is the 5th day on the dreaded steroid ear drops (9 to go). He is still scratching his ears a little bit but I have noticed the sores around his ears where he scratched have almost disappeared. He didn't eat his +8 last night which is very unusual for him. He was ravenous at +4 and I gave him a little extra food because he was so hungry. Maybe that is why he didn't touch the food later, but he is the kind of cat that never leaves any food sitting out. He ate well this morning, so maybe it was nothing. Or maybe because his bg is higher, it causes him to eat differently?

My DH and I took Cleo first thing this morning to learn how to do fluids on her. I didn't see Cleo's vet because he wasn't working today but the vet tech did an excellent job instructing us and answering questions. It wasn't too hard to do at the vet but of course, once it is just DH and I, things will probably not be as smooth. Cleo did pretty well but didn't like the cold fluid. They don't warm theirs up so hopefully with it being a little warmer, it won't be such a shock to her system. Cleo is now sitting right next to me, grooming herself. She got a reward of some chicken pieces when we got home. Should I see a change in her today with the fluids -- more active and eating better?

I know this is a long post, but I wanted to tell you about how sweet my DH was yesterday. While I was at work, he decided on his own to go to Petsmart to get all new bowls for Simon and Cleo (not plastic) and to get extra lids for the cat food cans since we have so many of them open to see what Cleo will decide to eat. He also researched water fountains and the price so he could look online for better deals. When I got home from work, I found out he made an additional trip back to Petsmart becuase he realized he forgot the freeze dried chicken. And Petsmart is not right around the corner. What a sweetie since normally I am the one to do all the pet shopping and taking care of the kitties unless I am unable to be home. Thanks Johnny!!!

Re: 7/16 Georgia's Simon AMPS 258 Cleo back from vet

That's good news that Simon's ears seem to be improving.

Great work on learning to give Cleo fluids, it can be intimidating until you try it. I agree about warming the fluids up a bit to make it more comfortable. My civvie did feel better after fluids when she needed them last year.

And super hugs to your DH! What a great guy!

Re: 7/16 Georgia's Simon AMPS 258 Cleo back from vet

I am glad that Simon's ears are improving - good news!! sorry for the amps, but at least you know why it is higher than normal.

I am glad that the vet visit went well - I am sure that you will do fine at home, once you get used to it. I too would think that warmer fluids would better. I know when my kitties had fluids, they did feel better, soon too. Good luck with it all.

KUDOS to DH! How thoughtful, and nice. YAY!!

Pictures to share:

Here is a picture of Cleo outside -- ignore the messy patio. I'm still trying to clean up leaves.

Here is a picture I took when Cleo just got back from the vet today. Simon doesn't seem to mind the "vetty" smell on Cleo. Don't be fooled -- Simon looks like he loves his nanner but he doesn't even touch it!

Great pictures :-D Funny, except for his white paws, it could be another Simon I know lying there
Glad his ears are clearing up, and let's hope his #s head down soon.

Cleo's adorable too, glad you're getting her situation in hand too.

Have a great weekend with DH!

P.S. Patios are outside, there's supposed to be leaves ;-)

Re: 7/16 Georgia's Simon AMPS 258 Cleo back from vet & pics

Hi Georgia, I love the pics, so cute the two of them. I'm glad Simon's sores are healing. I think the fluids will soon help Cleo feel better. They sure made a difference with my GA kitty. It's great you had a good instructor. That is so sweet of your DH in buying the dishes and researching a water fountain. I have that in the back of my mind to buy a water fountain for Maggie, so I'll be interested in which one your DH decides. Take care and sending vines for both Simon and Cleo. Have a nice weekend.

Re: 7/16 Georgia's Simon AMPS 258 Cleo back from vet & pics

Hi Georgia: I'm glad Simon is better and hope he will continue to improve and then his numbers will come back down. Also glad for the visit and learning lesson. I think the calmer you all are and make it seem like a bonding time instead of a stressed out time, it goes much better. LOVE the photos...they are so beautiful!

We warm the fluids in a bread pan. We tried just running the line through a bowl of warm water but that didn't work well enough to keep the kitties comfy. I think, besides the IV stand, the other best $25 we spent was on the IR thermometer which will give you the temp of the water through the bag. Here's the link:

IR Thermometer

We typically warm from 95-98...that's about the temp range our kitties like but some kitties like it warmer. As you know, 102 is roughly a normal cat temperature; I think it's smart to keep it under 100 because cats, just like people, vary on their body temp and you don't want it to be too warm.

I really like the B-Braun DEHP free LRS bags; you can buy the lines that go with that bag at thrivingpets.com; I think, right now, you don't need the lines with ports....that's only if you are giving meds that you want to inject into the port as you give fluids. We change lines every other bag...even when we were just doing one kitty, we used the same line for two bags. Just be sure you flush your line before and after giving fluids. I think there are so many little things that the vet techs forget to tell.

Aah...another day I hijacked your condo. You know where to find me if you have questions

eta: Your DH is awesome. How sweet of him to do all that!! What a great guy he is!

Re: 7/16 Georgia's Simon AMPS 258 Cleo back from vet & pics

i'm glad you got to go to the vet and the tech showed you how to do it....you will get into your own routine that works best....

go on YouTube and search 'subq fluids in cats' or something to that sort and you will see lots and lots of videos....and from them you will get to see what will work for you and Cleo....

i use one line per bag...cause if anything that will go wrong...it sure will be with Rocket....you gotta remember...at the vet...they call him the "poster child".....so if you are able to use one line to two bags then it's ok....

you will see her more relaxed....cause she is now hydrated....

how much did they give her? how much did they tell you to give?

the pictures are soooooo adorable....Cleo is one pretty classy lady ;-)

hats off to DH for being thoughtful....yes it is overwhelming but you will get into a routine that works for you and Cleo.....

hang in there....

as per Simon's numbers....keep telling to yourself....it is not Simon....it IS THE STEROIDS he is on.....and in the long run hopefully the ear situation will clear up....

hugs and prayers your way!

Re: 7/16 Georgia's Simon AMPS 258 + 7 200 pics

Simon is 200 at +7 so down a little but not quite blue yet. I think we would have been at least 199 if I had arrived home sooner than +7. Simon has to have his fuds on time or he gets very stressed and usually throws up.

Bruce, so your Mr. Simon looks like my Mr. Simon but without the white. I really like that! Also, I noticed that you have a cat named Chloe. That is so close to the name of my Cleo. Great minds think alike, right?

Ann, I'll let you know what I find out about the water fountains. Unless I can get a phenomenal deal, I'll have to wait since my DH says the ones that he liked were around $70. My car tag and registration fee comes first this week (doesn't the government know that our kitties come first!)

CD, I have heard that I should warm the water first. Why don't they do that at the vet? I guess too time consuming but you would think they would want to make it more comfortable for the kitties.

And Marje, thanks for the info about the thermometer and the link. I didn't even think about using a thermometer to test the fluids. And to let you know how much I am not a baker, I wasn't even sure what you meant by a bread pan!

Claudia, the vet tech says to give her 100 ml/day which seems a little high to me. Cleo is 13.8 pounds.

Natalia, I have pulled up the link you suggested but haven't had time to read it over. Thanks for reminding me about it. I'll earmark it so I won't forget.

Michelle, thanks for your kind words and support!! Everyone here has just been wonderful even though Cleo does not have diabetes and I am borrowing Simon's condo for Cleo. Simon is getting a little mad!

Re: 7/16 Georgia's Simon AMPS 258 + 7 200 pics

I wasn't even sure what you meant by a bread pan!

   How about a loaf pan? They are rectangular and the same shape as an LRS bag. Inexpensive pan works great.

Re: 7/16 Georgia's Simon AMPS 258 + 7 200 pics

The 100mls seems high to me too. I've read about smaller amounts every day being better on the cat. You are in good hands with Claudia Marjorie et al.

Your pictures made my day. I'm having a pity party day today so I needed that smile.

Your DH got some great hubby points!!!! Love hearing when other's DH's are so awesome. Mine got big time hubby points too this week. He fixed my smashed iphone - in Pink. I should post it on loose lips.

Hugs to Simon and Cleo. Glad Simon's ear is improving. Makes those number's worth it ;)
