7/15 Alex AMBB 134 BAD NIGHT

I was all ready to give better news about Alex but I guess this is going to go back and forth for a little while. At dinnertime last night I was at the refrigerator and he came over (which he does even if only because of a mild interest) so I decided to shake the "Liv-a-Littles" jar for the heck of it and he started climbing up my leg! I offered him one and he grabbed and ate it. Then two and three! So I put some Recovery in his bowl and sprinkled some on top and he ate most of it and then had some ff appetizer later on. I WAS SO RELIEVED because at the same time my vet was delivering to me some stuff for Jackson(injectable Pepcid and Baytril cause we decided that to give him anything else orally was not a good idea) who was as sick as I have ever seen any living creature. Jacky had been given Reglan in the AM and it had done nothing for him. I gave him Flagyl which I think made it worse because it was oral, and he had a shot of Centrine like 10 hours after the Reglan and THAT did nothing to stop his nausea or intestinal activity. I gave him fluids at about 9PM and a shot of Pepcid and Baytril and the vomiting bile and bloody diarrhea (if you can call it that-it was more blood than anything else. Not LARGE amounts but I guess he irritated the heck out of his rectum.) continued until around 2:30AM. Jackson was so disoriented from all of this that he could hardly stand up straight. He was gurgling and making pathetic noises and purring when I went to him which was often(not good purring). He had/has the bile and blood on his paws and he smells and I didn't think he was going to make it through the night. I stayed in the living room and slept a little, cried a lot and prayed a lot and I didn't think God was listening... but I guess he/she was because amazingly my little boy is still here today sound asleep on the floor next to me.

He hasn't had anything to eat or drink for over 48 hours.well hadn't. This morning when I gave Alex his medications I gave him some syringes of water and Jackson wanted some too so I let him have a drop (with much fear). He has had his fluids and antibiotic. The Pepcid lasts for 24 hours. And the vet came over about an hour ago and gave him probiotic and a little baby food in a syringe and so far he has kept it down. I know we have a long way to go but I wasn't sure I'd be writing this today...and I am so grateful that I am.

On the flip side, Alex has decided not to want to eat again so he was syringe fed again this morning :( I guess he will decide that he wants to eat again when he wants to. He still has some diarrhea also and I'm going to give him some probiotic in a little while. And maybe last night was very traumatic for him also.

Thanks Ronnie♥
I don't know what's wrong with me. maybe I'm over tired but I can't stop blubbering. Not sobbing or anything but tears just keep coming

sending more snowflakes your way, lots of them since they are needed by 2 kitties.

I hope your boyz turn a corner today. How rough to have both sick at the same time.

oh (((caryl)))...
the stress from having one kitty sick is just awful. two kitties... unbelievably hard.
sending speedy recovery vines, white light, and blizzards of snowflakes.

Hang in there Caryl! I can't imagine how hard last night was for you...I can only hope that today will get better. I'm glad to hear that Alex was eating some on his own, and that Jacky at least made it through the night. I wish I could be there to help you out--I'm sure you're exhausted and could use a little break, even tho I'm sure you don't want to leave Jacky's side.

And yes, I would imagine Alex will waffle a bit between wanting to eat and not wanting to eat. He's probably as worried about Jacky as you are, and if it were me I'd have a hard time eating too. Just hang in there and love your boys as much as you can--and know that we're all here sending love and hugs.

This is an awful nightmare for you Caryl.....but it sounds as if you are doing everything possible to help your boys. I am praying for you all and sending healing vines and snowflakes for them....hang in there and try to get some rest yourself. This is so difficult...I am so sorry that they are both so sick. Hoping for a corner to appear that they can both turn and begin to feel better. (((Caryl & Alex & Jackson)))

I just got the second 3 ml of baby food down Jackson about 30 minutes ago and so far so good (EVERYTHING CROSSED unjinx unjinx) He hasn't gone to pee all day and he had fluids this morning. Is that weird or did the fluids just replace what he lost. I mean I know he hasn't had anything to drink in 2 days I guess I'm finding stuff to worry about...?

Oh Caryl - you poor thing! What an awful, scary night!

I'm so glad it looks like Jackson might be turning the corner (anti-jinx) and I hope Alex is doing better.

More healing tummy and appetite vines and snowflakes headed your way.

caryl, i don't know how much pepcid you're giving but i answered a question about that to carolyn on facebook last night.
i give cleo injectable famotadine as well, as she has gas in her intestines as shown on xray.
my vet told me he prescribed the standard dose, which is 0.15ml BID, so i inject that when i give insulin twice a day. i got tuberculin syringes to administer the famotadine but didn't want to use those long needles so i put some in a container and used a U100 insulin syringe with short needles to draw it up and saw that it's between 11 and 12u in that syringe.

are you sure the famotadine is 24 hr? wondered if the amount you're giving is why it's supposed to last longer. but i give it every 12 hrs instead. we use it for her gas and to help support her system because of the steroid she gets as part of her lymphoma protocol.
for nausea we give cerenia, ondansetron, or anzemet instead. the first is 1/4 pill SID, the others are injectables SID (SID = once a day).

It is horrible when they can't or won't eat.

Sending eat eat vines to your babies.

(and since I'm not a regular, i'm going to ask... did your vet ever broach a feeding tube? if this is a long time issue, it might help)

No, this just all started on Saturday afternoon when Alex started acting weird and having diarrhea and vomiting that lasted for 12 hours then started again for another 24 because I made him eat because I was worried about him not eating. The second time he got really sick(well actually he's not done with loose stools yet), and then his brother, Jackson, started with the same thing 24 hours after he did (Tuesday morning) and had a worse bout of it than Alex (I was up the last two nights with him and have been really was scared)...vet thinks its a viral infection esp since they both have the same thing at the same time.

That's what I was told by my vet's tech and it seems to be helping him now. A lot of the answers to Carolyn's post concurred 24 hours which made me feel a lot better because it sounded like a long time for it to work to me as well. Cheryl(the tech)is the 'Cat Lady of NJ'..and many of her own kitties and her 'fosters' have stomach, pancreas and liver issues. I should know better than to doubt her about certain things. Diabetes is NOT one of them..but most vets don't do things the way we do on FDMB, and Jackson isn't diabetic.

Thanks for looking out for us though..we need all the help we can get. ♥

((Caryl))
Just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you Alex and Jackson.
It is incredibly difficult when our furbabies are not well and we feel
so helpless and powerless.
Lots of snowflakes and healing and eating vines are being sent to you.
Let out those cries. We are here for you.
((hugs))

Hi Caryl, I hope that tonight your boys are ready to turn a corner and recover nicely. Those fast virus infections are awful, but I'm sure Alex and Jackson will be OK. Stu and I are sending two bouquets of healing vines and some nice, cool snowflakes to your little guys. Get better, Alex and Jackson! And Caryl, try to get some rest!

Ella & Stu

Sorry to hear about your awful night! Hope things start to turn around for your baby's. My thoughts are with you.
Take Care
Jan

caryl, cleo's regular (cat-only) vet and two specialist (internal medicine and oncologist) vets prescribed the injectable famotadine for every 12 hours. these are specialists and not lay people.

doesn't mean every 24 hrs isn't wonderfully helpful. but BID is perfectly accceptable too. i buy it in the larger 20ml bottles so it lasts longer and is more economical.

right now it may not be a major consideration but if you find more pepcid is warranted you will be able to increase the dose to BID. you didn't say what your dose is, but i'm only speaking with reference to a standard 0.15ml dose BID of the injectable famotadine.

the others may be confusing the injectable with the pill. i THINK when we first try pepcid in pill form we go with 1/4 pepcid AC once a day and increase if necessary. but i know that only from lay opinions here on the board, not from my vets, and it's what some FDMBers try first when we suspect pancreatitis.

Hi Caryl.
I hope your boys are starting to get over this bug. Sending Hugs to you, and feel better soon vines to Jackson and Alex.

I also gave it twice a day with Spot's pancreatitis (as opposed to TID on the tablets), and Nina has it for once or twice a day as needed. Cats metabolize everything very quickly and I would wonder when both dog and cat are recommended SID dosing. If it helps, for comparison I also had injectible Reglan on BID dosing. You might send Jess and Earl a PM and see what she has to say about it.

Thanks so much again..hopefully this will be short lived for Jackson and I won't need to use this for very long but now at least I'm armed with useful information. :)

The little bit of baby food is good. Maybe they have started to turn the corner. I wish I could offer something helpful, but you are a walking encyclopedia now, and I just don't know. So I am sending healing thoughts and energy, and hugs for you, and faith that they will improve.

Get well, Alex and Jacky!
