Trouble is doing good this morning. He is out in the garden refusing to come in for a snack. He knows if he comes in I might shut the door behind him and that will be the end of his fun. I have a question that has been concerning me, but haven't asked it because Trouble seems to be doing so well. Since his numbers have gone down, I haven't seen him or his civie brother drink a drop of water. I change out the water ever couple days, but the level remains the same. Trouble has a cup on the counter that use to be his favorite spot to drink...same thing no drinking. I have been adding a few drops of water to each of their food bowls the last couple weeks just because it is bothering me, but the no drinking has been going on much longer. Should I be so concerned?

Hi Not sure how to answer because I don`t know but if you put it in your Subject line you will get more answers {  Advice etc.}LOL

Cats usually get most, if not all, of their water intake from their food if they are on the right diet. If you are adding water to his wet food, it is quite possible that he just does not need any more to drink. I very very rarely (once in a blue moon) see my civvie drink any water. With those nice non-diabetic range numbers you have been seeing lately, it is likely that his increased water consumption from the diabetes has gone away.

As long as the scruff test indicates that he is well hydrated, I wouldn't worry a bit. I sometimes add up to a 1/4 cup of water per 3oz of food for my kitties.

One thing I would add... It might be useful to change his water at least daily. (I do it twice daily.) That way, you'll be sure he isn't being turned off by non-fresh water.

Also, Kitty did stop drinking when his numbers were under control -- EXCEPT when he has been on the porch in the heat (he doesn't like to come in either). If he gets really hot, he drinks. So keep that water fresh, just in case!

Not to worry about the water. Kelly & Oscar are right, the water comes from the wet food and a better regulated cat.....BG wise. Ever since Punk's been getting the good numbers, I find I have to dust off the water in her water bowl and if I see her drink from it, I get worried and watch her like a hawk

I don't really dust off her water!! ;-) I keep it fresh just in case.

Not to worry, as cat gets better & bg gets lower, less need to drink--
Moonie used to lay near the water bowl 24 /7 when she was sick, no has begun to drink again, but not much--
I DO add water to their food as it also helps with constipatiion..With that bg-108, Trouble looks Pretty darn Good!!!

this happened to Tray once he got on insulin and his BG came down. I asked my vet about it and he told me not to worry that as long as he's eating wet food he should be hydrated enough. He told me if I was worried I could always do a pinch test. Pinch his skin at his nape and see how fast it goes back to normal. If it goes quickly it should indicate he's properly hydrated.

Tray only drinks now if the water is very cold and very fresh, sometimes he'll take a couple of licks when I first put the bowl down after changing the water. But most days he never even looks at the bowl. My civie is pretty much the same too.

One of the telltale symptoms of diabetes is polyuria and polydipsia (PU/PD) -- peeing a lot and drinking a lot. Once a cat is better regulated, both go back to normal. Your civvie is a good guide with respect to water intake. I occasionally will see Gizmo or Gabby at the water fountain. Like you, I had a separate bowl for Gabby which I've since put away. I add water to their food just for the purpose of kidney health.

The fact that Trouble isn't drinking like he used to is a very good sign!

Brutus never drinks water anymore and niether does his civvie sister once she quit dry food.Your'e right, the water just sits there.we always put it out anyway just in case.

Thanks for all the feedback. I will rest easier now, but continue to freshen water daily. I checked Trouble's scruff and it seems to bounce right back!
