Good morning, LL!
Ripley is going great today.
As a matter of fact, she's such a show-off this morning: she sat at my feet as I got her testing supplies ready (Look at me, ma! I'm ready for my test!), bragged about her awesome amps (Look at my nice number, ma! It's almost green, your favorite color!), showed-off her amazing peeing and pooping abilities as I was scooping the LB (Watch what I can do! See? Are you watching?), and is now finishing up her breakfast (I'm such a good kitty ~ I deserve more shrimp treats, don't you think?).

Yes, Ripley, you're such a good kitty, and I'm thankful for you each and every day. cat_pet_icon

Thank you for the visits last night, Deborah (love the cartoon! Hilarious!!) and Marje! :-D :-D
Sending healing vines to Jupiter and Maggie, and ((Smokey and Kathie)).
:YMHUG:

:?: I want to teach an old cat a new trick: harness training ~ if you use one on your kitty, which type/brand do you recommend?

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, harness recommendation?

Morning Josie, oh how sweet with Ripley showing off all her talents for Mama. I love the show and tell on the LB especially. I remember Barb of Checkers had a neat harness. Are you planning on nice walks with Ripley? I'm sure you'll get lots of good feedback. Beautiful numbers yesterday for Riipples.
Have a great day.
Thanks for the Maggie vines.

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, harness recommendation?

Hi Josie,

I used to use a bunny harness, it just velcroed around the kitty. Went on easy and my GA Linus didn't seem to mind it. That was quite a few years ago, they probably have a bigger selection for kitties now!

Ripley was very pround of herself this morning  Love the LB showoffs

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, harness recommendation?

Ginger wears one that has two loops and one connecting piece of the two loops that is supposed to rest between the shoulders. One loop is fastened around the neck and the other loop is fastened around her chest. This type of harness tends to slip around her mid-section even though it is very snug fitting. They might call this kind a figure eight.

I prefer the kind that J.D. has, where there are two connecting pieces of the two loops. One connects the loops between his shoulder blade and the other connects the loops between his frond feet. This harness does not slip around his middle and so the dee ring where the leash snaps on stays where it is supposed to at the top of his back.

You want the harness to be snug. They can learn to back out of them, picture one of us taking a Tshirt off.

To train, I have treats with me, and I walk to the end of the leash and call the cat, and when they come to me, I give them a treat. Slowly and with lots of patience, they will follow where you go, unless they want to go the other direction

I'll be interested on all the harness info as I will need one for Hoot nailbite_smile  Have a great day Josie :YMPEACE:

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, +3 99, harness recommendation?

Barely green, but I'll take it!

Hi, Ann :-D The harness won't be for walks (sweet old girl doesn't have much energy these days), but we're hoping to take her camping with us sometime ~ it's something DH and I live for during the summer, and we may try an experiment to see if it's doable with Rippo.

Hi, Jane :-D I like the idea of a velcro harness ~ seems easy! Thanks for the input! I went to Petco yesterday, but there are several varieties of kitty harnesses, and I got instantly overwhelmed.

Hi, Dyana :-D Thanks so much for the harness advice ~ I really appreciate it! I'll look for the kind J.D. has ~ I definitely don't want a 'slipery' harness. (Though Ripley isn't a 'darter,' so that's good ~ she stays by my side even when scared.)

Hi, Pam :-D There are so many options out there for harnesses ~ I had a feeling we could get some valuable input here on the board. Let me know if you decide on one ~ we can compare notes

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, +3 99, harness recommendation?

That's so cute with Ripley's show and tell this morning. Good luck finding a harness for Ripley.

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, +3 99, harness recommendation?

I bought Tom's harness at PetSmart, I had to buy a dog harness. The largest cat harness was too small....so I bought the smallest Dog harness. nothing fancy....

Don't be surprised if Ripley just lays down and doesn't move when in the harness. All I know is: Tom harness free is a normal walking investigating cat ....but when that harness is on: nope. won't really move. just a step or 2 and plop down he goes for A LONG WHILE. not too happy with the harness...but sometimes you just have to contain them and keep them close. sounds to me like if you aren't concerned with walking Ripley...a harness will be great!

camping 'eh? oh how fun. My DH and I are campers too! just tent camping...but that is the best. Just like you, camping so far this summer is a bust....

let us all know how it turns out!!

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, +3 99, harness recommendation?

Josie,
I love this vest/harness. Two of my cats use it. Fifteen pound Tux, couldn't fit.
Both Checkers and Clancy get nuts, when they hear the thing rustle in my hands. They're like a dog with it's leash.

Clancy

It's very secure, with heavy Velcro under their belly and neck/chest.

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, +3 99, harness recommendation?

I have used this type with all of my foldies when I take them outside.
Both the neck and chest are adjustable. The brand is "Lupine", but I'm sure there are other manufacturers.

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, +3 99, +6.5 80

You mean that sudden paralysis problem they get when you first put the harness on them?

Or, they attempt to chew it off.

Re: 7/14 Ripley AMPS 107, +3 99, +6.5 80

Hi Josie. Ripely looks great today. I hope Ripley learns to like a harness.

We bought PurrFace one. We only use it when we take him to the vet. He's a lot calmer than when he was enclosed his carrier. He won't walk in in it, he just lays down. We bought it at PetSmart. It's a small dog harness and is fastened by Velcro.

Have a great day.

Re: 7/14 Ripley PMPS 150, teensy increase

Ripley got an increase tonight, from f0.50u to sk0.75u (maybe half a drop difference?). We'll see what happens...

Hi, Barb :-D Thanks for the recommendations and the luck ~ I have no idea how Ripley will respond to a harness ~ I can picture her lying down and trying to chew it off  .

Hi, MJ :-D ....Or Ripley may suffer from Sudden Paralysis due to New Harness... Maybe I'll have to get a wagon to pull her around in, too

Hi, John :-D Thanks so much for the pic (kinda looks like a mask w/ 2 eye holes  ).

Re: 7/14 Ripley PMPS 150, teensy increase

Work that increase, Ripley!!! Wow...you've gotten so many harness responses - how cool! Have a great evening, Josie!

Re: 7/14 Ripley PMPS 150, teensy increase

Hi Josie,
So glad to know that Ripley is doing so good!
Good luck with the harness training!
It would be so fun if Ripley is OK with it.
I never used one myself, but my friend uses the "jacket" type.
I read somewhere that the jacket type is more difficult for a cat to wiggle out.

Hi, Amy :-D I love this board: as and ye shall receive!

Hi, Mariko :-D Thanks for the suggestion. Makes sense that a jacket-type would be more challenging for kitties (unless the kitty is the Houdini-type  ;-) ).
