Re: 7/14 Morgaine AMPS 202
Barely yellow AMPS ! That sure was one nice string-o-numbers yesterday. . .
I'll have to wait until I'm home to see Morgaines profile & pics (dagnabit)!
In answer to your questions from yesterday:
I have never heard of IAA but will look that up.
IAA stands for Insulin Auto Antibodies, which causes extreme insulin resistance. BK was becoming a big gulper so first we tested for Acro, then Cushings, then IAA and bingo - 84%, which is very high. That was the reason. Not much out there about treating it.
So, were you using Regular insulin and how did that work in BK? Is R commonly used for kitties with high, stubborn numbers or just for certain conditions like IAA? How about humalog?
Yes, we used quite a bit of R for BK - he probably would not have survived without it. Kitties with Acro or Cushings or IAA use R. I don't know about Humalog.
I always wonder if any studies have been done on cats and fast acting insulins to bring really high numbers down. I would think the kitty would need very close observation and possibly hospitalization.
I'm not sure if any studies have been done. I am very sure that it should be used in only the toughest circumstances and extremely sparingly. It requires
very close monitoring; it's dangerously powerful. Since BK is my office cat, I was able to keep a very close eye on him during the day. DBF is a nightowl, so he could keep an eye on BKs PM cycles.
(I think I got the link to his ss fixed. . .)
